Kohler Recognized as one of the

best school communities for music
education in the nation
New federal education law, Every Student Succeed Act
(ESSA), places new emphasis on music and the arts as key to
a well-rounded education
On March 24, 2016, the School
District of Kohler was honored
with the Best Communities for
Music Education designation
from the NAMM Foundation for
its outstanding commitment to
music education. Kohler joins 476
districts across the country in receiving the prestigious award in
2016.
The Best Communities Music
Education designation is awarded
to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in eorts to
provide music access and education to all students.
Districts that have been recognized by the NAMM Foundation
are held up as models for other educators looking to boost their own
music education programs.
To qualify for the Best Communities designation, Kohler Schools
answered detailed questions about
funding, graduation requirements,

music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for

the music program, and community music-making programs.
Responses were veried and reviewed by The Music Research
Institute at the University of Kansas.
In both 2001 and 2007, the
School District of Kohler was
recognized as one of the 100 Best
Communities in America for Music Education by the American
Music Conference, Music Teachers National Association, and National School Boards Association.
While the sponsorship has been
given to the NAMM Foundation,
the same criteria still exist and
recognitions were expanded to
include more schools who meet
their criteria.
This award recognizes that the
community of Kohler is leading
the way with learning opportuni-

ties as outlined in the new federal

education legislation, the Every
Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
The legislation, signed into law
in December 2015, replaces No
Child Left Behind Act. ESSA recommends music and the arts as
important elements of well-rounded education for all children.
The NAMM Foundations Best
Communities for Music Education Award and the implementation of the federal ESSA law bring
attention to the importance of
keeping music education part of
the schools core education for all
students. It also highlights musics
vital role in students overall success in school.
Community music programs
have been drawing increased attention because of a landmark
study by Northwestern University
brain scientists. These researchers
found new links between students

in community music programs

and academic success in subjects
such as reading.
Beyond the Northwestern study,
other reports indicate that learning
to play music can boost academic
and social skills, such as processing math and learning to cooperate in group settings.

For nearly four decades, Village

resident Larry Kampman was a
xture at Kohler High School basketball games serving in various
management and coaching roles.
Kampman started his coaching career as the Blue Bombers junior
varsity boys basketball coach in
1977.
As the boys varsity team manager alongside head coach Dan
Buhr, Kampman helped lead a
1979-80 team of talented players,
including a young Joe Wolf, to a
Class C state championship, and
three more state championship
wins after that. (Joe Wolf went
on to play for the NBA and later
served as assistant coach for the
Milwaukee Bucks. He is currently
an assistant coach for the Brooklyn Nets). Kampman, (aectionately referred to as Kampy),
held a special place in the hearts of

Kohler alum Logan

Willis named
All-American
Scholar Athlete
Kohler native Logan Willis (class
of 2013), was recently selected as
an All-American Scholar Athlete
by the College Golf Coaches Association of America. This award recognizes NCAA student athletes that
show both exceptional performance
in their particular sport and in the
classroom. Logan carries a 3.95
GPA and is a junior on the womens golf team at Loyola University. She majors in Digital Media and
Film Production with a minor in
Marketing. This is Logans second
award as an All-American Scholar
Athlete. This summer, Logan will

She will be working as part of the

Kohler freshman awarded

inaugural Brad Homiston
Scholarship

On May 9, 2016, Josh Gillespie was awarded the inaugural
Brad Homiston Summer Music
Camp Scholarship at the spring
band concert. The new scholarship is, and will continue to be,
awarded to a high school student
to attend a summer music camp
to further their passion for making music.
Selection for the scholarship is
based on the participation in the
WSMA Solo & Ensemble Festival, as well as participation in

school and community performing ensembles. Students should

also be motivated to excel at
their instrument, be passionate
about performing and take the
initiative to lead by example.
Josh Gillespie is a freshman
at Kohler High School and performs in the symphony band,
pep band and jazz ensemble.
He is also a member of the Sheboygan Youth Symphony and
studies percussion with Glenn
Zeinemann. As a freshman, Josh
performed a drum set solo and
parade drum solo in which he

also qualied for the state music

festival.
Brad Homiston attended
Kohler schools and graduated from Kohler High School in
1988. He then continued his education and graduated from the
University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in metallurgical engineering. His greatest joy
was drumming.

unions Business Services Department and will help the department
analyze current and future business lending partners. Rabon, District Manager for Ozaukee County, joins the Retail Department
and will oversee four of the credit
unions branches including the
Plymouth, Saukville, Grafton and
Mequon locations. Grinna, Chief

strategic direction to the organizations technology investments

Scout pack in Kewaskum, volunteering at the local elementary
school and prior participation as a
board member at the Kewaskum
Chamber of Commerce.
Rabon brings over 18 years of
nancial experience to Kohler
Credit Union and has held nu-

merous management positions

across a variety of nancial institutions. At her most recent employer, Rabon held titles including branch manager, compliance
manager, product manager and
IRA administrator. Rabon holds a
masters degree in adult business
education from the University of
Wisconsin-Whitewater and an
undergraduate degree in business administration with a minor
in human resources from Upper
Iowa University. She is active in
her community through her work
as a revolving loan committee
member of the African American
Chamber of Commerce, banking
and nance committee member at
Milwaukee Area Technical Col-

lege and nancial literacy coach

at Maximus.
Grinna brings over 20 years of
experience in the nancial services industry, having most recently held technology leadership
roles at FIS and Metavante. Grinna earned a bachelor of business
administration degree in accounting from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and is a certied public accountant. She began
her career in accounting then
quickly moved into technology
management and has continued
to build upon her experience in
the information technology eld.
Grinna and her family reside in
West Bend where she is active in

her local community. She currently serves on the board of the Museum of Wisconsin Art (MOWA)
and as board president for Roots
and Branches, as well as being active with her local Rotary group.
Im excited to join an organization so committed to member
service and community involvement. Kohler Credit Union has a
wonderful legacy and I am looking forward to being of part of the
future success, said Grinna.

Kampman, continued from page 1

two generations of KHS basketball players and many others who
called him their friend. He passed
away on May 9, 2016 at the age of
74.
Doug Bocchini, who was on
the rst team coached by Kampman in 1977, as well as the Blue
Bombers rst state championship winning team in 1980, said
Kampman continued his coaching
career under several more varsity coaches including Coach Paul
Swanson, who took the team to
state championship wins in 1982
and 1983; Coach Je Wolf, whose
team won a state championship in

1999; and most recently, his close

friend, Ken Roeder.
Bocchini said Kampman was
proud to turn over his JV coaching duties two years ago to his
son-in-law, Kyle Gebler, allowing him to remain on as freshmen
coach/varsity assistant until his
health no longer allowed him to
continue.
Kampy will be remembered
by his players for being a coach
and a friend, said Bocchini. His
half court shooting contests were
always a highlight, which paid
dividends for one of his players,
2013 grad Tyler Lewis, who won

an $18,000 half court shot on

ESPN at the University of Virginia last Year.
Kampys recent team of players
honored him a couple seasons ago
by raising money for him by selling Kampy wristbands in his
honor.
Everyone who played for
Kampy would like to thank his
wife, Sue, and his daughters,
Gena and Dana, for allowing him
to be away from them for so many
nights over the years and allowing
him to be part of our lives. Kampy
will denitely be missed, said
Bocchini.

Larry Kampman (1941 - 2016)

Larry John Kampman, 74, of Kohler,
passed away peacefully
in his home surrounded
by family on Monday,
May 9th, 2016. He was
born on October 1st,
1941 in Sheboygan and
was the son of LaMar and Eugenia
(Hettinger) Kampman.
Larry graduated in the nal
class of Central High School in
1960, attended UW-Madison and
served his country in the US Army
during Vietnam. After returning to
Sheboygan, he married the love
of his life, Suzann Heyn, on September 21st, 1968. He enjoyed his
work as a Field Representative
with Piggly Wiggly.
Larry was an active member of
St. Johns parish where he was a
lay distributor, served on the Bingo committee for many, many
years and arrived early every Sunday to get the front row seat.
Larry loved everything sports
related. He coached JV Basketball at Kohler High School for
36 years and refereed high school
and semi-pro football for over 44
years. He also served as the commissioner for the Lakeshore Baseball League. Larry was an avid
Packer, Badger, and Kohler fan.
One of his favorite memories was
being courtside during the Badgers win at the Final Four tournament in 2015.
Larry enjoyed playing cards
with his poker clubs, vacationing
in Door County with family and
dear friends and talking to neigh-

bors for hours on the

back deck. He was always up for going out
for ice cream, going to
a casino, watching the
sunset over the lake
and listening to live
music. Larry also loved
spending time with his grandchildren, especially watching them
play sports.
Larry is survived by his wife
Suzann, daughters, Gena (Kyle)
Kampman-Gebler and Dana
Kampman, by his grandchildren;
Carter, Kennedy, and Wilson Gebler and Rouguiata and BoBo Diallo, by his brother Gary Kampman,
and sisters, Cindy Regan and Marla Yurk, special cousin Beth Rybakowicz, and also by numerous
nieces, nephews, other relatives
and friends. He was preceded in
death by his parents.
A Memorial Mass was held
on May 13th, 2016 at St. Johns
Catholic Church in Kohler, with
Fr. Robert Lotz ociating.
In lieu of owers, a memorial
fund will be established in Larrys
name.
The family would like to say a
special thank you to Dr. Bettag,
Stacy Miller and all the nurses at
the oce, as well as the sta of
St. Nicholas Hospice. They would
also like to thank all their family
and friends that provided roundthe-clock support over the past
few weeks.

Come join us and have your cake and eat it too!

The people of Grace UCC, 500 School Street in Kohler, invite the public to join them for supper on Wednesday, June 1
from 5:00-7:30 p.m. We will oer brats, hamburgers, salads,
desserts, and beverage to be eaten at tables on the church
lawn or for carry out to the KHS Scroll Night festivities. We will
remain open after the festivities for those who wish to take
some home. It will be a wonderful way to ease the rush on
this night as you go and watch the activities of our youth and
children. In case of inclement weather, we will serve in the
church basement.

hired Chef Frank Marzano to supervise the kitchens and plan resident meals on all three campuses.
Frank is going to be a great

Frank has a bachelor of science
degree in hospitality management
and an associate degree in food
service management from Ferris
State University in Big Rapids,
MI. He has worked in a variety

of roles including chef at Antoinettes/Antonios/Amore; banquet

manager at The Ostho Resort
and banquet director at The American Club. Frank also operates
Marzano Pizza Company and is
commonly known as The Pizza
Guy, bringing homemade pizza
parties to customers homes.
Pine Haven Christian Home
was opened by local area churches
in 1950 to provide our seniors the
loving care Christ would provide.
The rst campus is located on
Giddings Avenue in Sheboygan
Falls and now oers 115 traditional assisted living resident rooms
and 22 assisted living rooms for
those with memory care needs.
Pine Havens Pine Drive campus
in Oostburg oers 30 assisted living apartments with three levels of
care. The Haven Drive campus on
the north side of Sheboygan Falls,
oers a full continuum of care on
one campus. The supported independent living (residential care

apartment complex) portion of the

Haven Drive campus opened in
2007 with 40 apartments, called
Prairie Crossing. The skilled nursing facility at our Haven Drive
campus opened in June 2015, and
includes 36 rooms for long term
care and an entire rehabilitation

SHEBOYGAN FALLS YMCA MIGHTY MITE FLAG FOOTBALL

Registration for the 2016 Mighty Mite Flag Football League for the communities of
Oostburg and Sheboygan Falls has begun. The Mighty Mite Flag Football League
is for youth in grades 1 and 2 in the Fall of 2016.. Beginning the week of August
15, teams will hold one practice during the week. Oostburg teams will practice in
their community. Games begin on September 10 and the season ends on October
15, 2016. All games will be played on Saturday afternoons at the Sheboygan Falls
High School. The registration deadline is July 31, 2016.

SHEBOYGAN COUNTY YMCA TACKLE FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Registration for the 2016 Tackle Football League for the communities of Oostburg,
Sheboygan and Sheboygan Falls has begun. The Tackle Football League is for
youth in grades 3 and 4 in the Fall of 2016. The season runs from August 15
October 8, 2016. Volunteer coaches will lead two practices a week for 1 - 2
hours for the first 4 weeks of this program. The day and time of practice will be
determined by the coach. Starting on September 10, a Saturday game that will
take the place of one of the practices. Games will be played on Saturday afternoon
at the Sheboygan Falls High School. The registration deadline is July 1, 2016.

claims two invitational titles
The

Christian-Kohler Challenge was held
at Blackwolf Run on April 27.
This event employed a special
format that included both stroke
play and match play. The stroke
play portion included six players
from each team, with the low four
scores counting towards the team
score. Counting for Kohler (173)
were: Jack Cassady 41, Charlie Twohig 43, Jim Conklin 44,
Amanda Egbert 45. Counting for
Christian (192) were: Josh Huenink 43, Jacob Stecker 48, Michael
Alsum 50, Brayden VanEss 51.
Within each foursome, two players from each team played a one
best Ball of two match play format against the two players from
the opposing team. Each of these
matches was were a total of three
points (1-3,4-6,7-9). The results of

program is for youth in grades 1 8 in Fall of 2016. The fall season is from September 10 October 29, 2016 and the spring season is from April 15 June 3,
2017. Teams hold one practice a week in their community. Games are played on
Saturday morning/early afternoon. Registrations received by July 15, 2016 receive
an early bird discount and are guaranteed placement on a team. After July 15,

Louisiana charm. Faith began her
lifelong love affair with yoga in the early
90s as a way to cope as her beloved
brother Michael was dying from a
complication related to AIDS. Through
meditation and mindfulness Faith was
able to release her fears and experience
an awakening from within. From that
day forward, she committed herself to
sharing these practices with the world.

at each step you will find your way into
the flow of your natural self. The practice
will include short lecture highlighting
the Spiritually Fly Sutras, a flowing
vinyasa class inspired by the qualities
of the deities, infused with kriyas, and
