Positive output of Same Sex Marriages
Media technology has taken over the world within a past decade, portraying legal issues
from the past as a positive outbreak in the present. Television, movies, and even commercial
advertisements/news are beginning to incorporate the ideas of two people of the same sex to join
their lives together, and perhaps raise children together as well. The non-traditional marriage
concept has become an issue in the legal system and also the media system more frequently.
Going from having only a handful of states to accept gay marriages to every state in America
today is a huge issue over media. People are starting to move away from the ideas of a traditional
marriage due to a shift towards gay marriages, being supported by Television, movies, and
commercials; therefore, causing a positive output to society to accept the fact that people who are
different in their own family traditions are being recognized as a regular family.
Recently through the assistance of media gay marriages have been represented and
viewed on television as a normal viewing for society. One famous show that has been around for
years now is called Modern Family. The show contains a gay couple who are raising a child
together, giving that child love, support, and other beautiful attributes that any other family can
give to there kid whether they come from a traditional or non traditional family. Whenever one
walks outside of their house they should feel free that their lives have a meaning. Author
Andrea M. Hackl wrote an article about gay marriages called, : From "Gay Marriage
Controversy" (2004) to "Endorsement of Same-Sex Marriage" (2012): Equality Discourse,

stating that After a history of invisibility and discrimination, lesbian and gay individuals today
encounter more societal acceptance than ever before. A recent national survey shows that in
2012, fifty-four percent of Americans consider lesbian and gay relationships acceptable
showing how as time goes by people change their own views as well whether they support or do
not support the ideas of a gay couple. Millions of people sit down in front of a television and
watch their favorite shows or anything else that is portrayed through TV and see how there are
gay couples raising children together in a loving environment. Such actions before the
legalization of same sex marriage throughout all 50 states in the U.S would have been looked
upon as an epidemic, now more than the half nation accepts these ideas. Media does a great job
of immediately incorporating new laws into the system and creates an environment people wish
to live in where no matter what is said or done they can be happy that they are accepted into their
society. Although TV shows are a great way to be informed about the new laws that take effect
such as gay marriage, one cannot forget that television is no the only source of media that
educates viewers about the different variety of families.
For many years gay marriages has always been a legal issue. One article written by
Mariano Croce states, The issue of same sex marriage equality today is the same marriage
going around. Many people did not want to legalize or approve the idea of two people from the
same sex. Today we see sex marriages being treated as a traditional family. The choice of same
sex marriage should never have to be affected with the opinions and comment of others. No
person shall ever be denied the right to any form of service because they chose to do what makes
them happy and spent the time with whoever makes them happy. Although TV shows are a great
way to be informed with new ideas that are becoming accepted through viewers not everyone
watches TV, so in order to educate people who enjoying watching media sources such as movies

can also be knowledge about the new laws and ideology about gay marriages becoming a
positive factor to society.
One of the biggest American Fads is the world of their amazing Cinema. Movies being
one of the highest watched programs of America with Hulu, Netflix, and Prime Video it makes
accessing a movie 100 times easier than before going through a library pulling out what book
one was looking to for information. Media is everything today and through the help of a branch
called the movies they are able to portray and produce films that sometimes have a connection to
current events. Every branch of media like TV, movies, news, and commercials all have a
different audience; one who watches the news may not watch movies as often so in order for
them to be informed about how gay marriages are slowly becoming accepted they see it
represented on the news as apposed to the movie theater screen. One movie that portrays gay
marriages as a positive form of a non-traditional marriage is Bridegroom, but then the movie
takes a big change in plot. In the movie characters Shane and Tom are both exited to marry one
another once the law for same sex marriage was passed in California; however, before the
marriage ceremony happened Tom passed away in a car accident. In society legalizing marriage
doesnt justify that some people will have a own personal strong opinion against the idea. In this
movie Toms parents didnt let Shane attend the funeral since he was a gay person. Goes to show
how no matter how much people in the society and even the government show support towards
the ones to chose to move away from a non traditional marriage between a man and a women,
some people around will always hold there strong opinion they have against someone in order to
be downgrading and derogatory about the subject.
Being able to watch a movie and have a totally different form of marriage being
portrayed as to before it was accepted, now that it is an accepted by law people have

Alajajian 4
opportunities to do big things by creating new films that show how these changes are positively
being portrayed about different family dynamics. An author by the name of Betty Farrell has a
book titled The Making of an Idea, an Institution, and a Controversy in American Culture in
which she talks about the Family affairs and how things are changing, she states, The American
family is always in a state of change. How we perceive the very concept of family is based
largely on where we come from and what values we share(392). In America the traditional
family has always been perceived as a man and a woman who combine their love and devotion
to one another. Another small perception is that all the family would go to have children and live
as a happy family. So when people say that the familys change is always shifting around it is
fine. Some people based off of family values and the way they were thought how to portray a
certain form of marriage like gay marriage may choose to refuse to have someone in their family.
In the case of the movie Bridegroom two men were going to marry each other; however, once a
tragic incident happened taking ones life his partners parents refused to let his soon to be
husband attend the wedding because he was a homosexual person. Never take anything in life for
granted in the matter of seconds life can take away amazing changes that could have potentially
happened.
Advertisement has a really encouraging commercial that involves a gay couple and a
child. Campbells soup has a small video advertisement showing how a gay couple can raise a
child and the child will be happy no matter what kind of family the child will grow up between.
There is an article that is written by Mariano Croce which states, The issue of same-sex
marriage equality today us at the center stage of political debates. Many years of politics and
the media together have always had a very outdoing debate behind the ideas of same-sex
marriages. Once the society adapts to a dynamic that isnt like the usual family more
opportunities became available for couple who cannot have children, adopt and help out a child

Alajajian 5
who was in a home full of other kids with no parents. To have a commercial that depicts a gay
couple feeding their baby is great to know that kids who grow up in a same sex marriage home
actually have people who will care for them. With the legalization of gay marriages couple that
chose to marry and start a family together have the option to raise a child through a foster care
program, adoption, or even biological through a surrogate. Some of these kids never have a
chance to live with a family, but if two people just because there are both from the same sex
doesnt mean they will never give this child a great life.
Many years through media and news there are always debates and arguments about how
states did not want to legalize the same sex marriage laws. In the year 2005 article written by
Gardner Selby stated, Less than a month before Texas voters act on a proposal to add a ban on
gay marriage to the state constitution, a group opposing the amendment unveiled TV ads on
Wednesday featuring gay and lesbian couples and a man and woman presented as having gay
sons. The people who lived in Texas at the time wanted to ban gay marriage from the state, not
more than a decade later the United Stated Government passed a law that gay marriage is legal in
all 50 states. When people go out onto a news channel or on a camera and put down the ones
who are gay by calling them hateful names is just making themselves look bad because many
people in this world saw the ideas of a gay couple being a positive way of living. Media runs our
society today, wherever you go people are on there self phones while walking, eating, and
driving. Media will always show a political, social, or a family dynamic involved issue. People
need to learn to accept the ideas that others make and if it affects there lives, they dont need to
rush out and put the ones who do what makes them happy. In the end gay couples are still the
same people we are just because they have a different sexual orientation does not mean they
should be treated any differently. People are equal and need to be treated equally no matter that

Alajajian 6
the situation is and respect one another like they say treat others the way you would like to be
treated.
Media today is changing people lives very rapidly with just a click of a button weather
you are watching TV or browsing the web. Technology and representation are so rapidly
increasing that people have no control over the media anymore. Gay marriage over the years has
greatly increased on media in a very positive way. Before people would not want to talk about or
see gay couples on a media source, but today they are all over and creating more chances by
helping support children, adopting them, and caring for them. No gay couple should feel
ashamed or isolated because with all the positive increase in supporters they should live a more
comfortable lifestyle.
