GENRE ANALYSIS

Barriers to Educational Opportunities for Hispanics in the United States

According to an online version of Merriam-Webster genre means "a category of artistic,
musical, or literary composition characterized by a particular style, form, or content."
Genres are ways of communicating, ethos, pathos, logos. Some genres are based on
opinion, while others are based on facts which make them more credible than the ones
based on only opinion because they will provide better feedback based on research to
back up your claim. For the purpose of this class, genres are extremely important when it
comes to how well the author or producer delivers the message to your audience. How
will this affect the credibility of your paper? What
source works best for the purpose of this class when it comes to comparing these two genres/?
As we all know Hispanics today, have faced many barriers when it comes to higher
education, but what genre will impact the audience and will be able to back up their
claim. a lot better when it comes to connecting with your audience. These two genres
explain the importance of higher education when it comes to the Hispanic culture, and
the many obstacles they have faced through experiences, but these two genres differ from
each other for many reasons.
The two genres that were selected for the purpose this class are," The Latino Education
Crisis, "The Consequences of Failed Social Policies," by Patricia Gandera and Frances
Contreras, which was written in 2009. The second genre that was selected was a you tube
video," Young Latinos and College," published in March 2013, by Al Dia news media.
Although these two genres both relate to higher education when it comes to Hispanics
they both have different similarities in some way. For the purpose of this class, genre A
will work better in this class for the purpose that it has by far more credibility when it

comes to your ethos, pathos, and logos. As we get closer to end the end of this paper we
will determine what genre helps the credibility of this topic and what genre is much more
credible for this class.
AUDIENCE
In the first genre: which is the book written by Patricia Gandera and Frances Contreras
the author's main audience mainly focuses on the advocates, researchers, and students
who are focusing on the statistics of every Hispanics attending college. Author's main
focus is to inform the reader on how hard a minority has to work in order to overcome
every obstacle they have to face as a minority trying to achieve what is almost the
impossible for the American Society. Here the author is telling the reader that no matter
what barriers Hispanics are facing today, anything can be achieved if you have the moral
support. ,In the You Tube video, which was produced by, Al Dia news media the
producer introduces many Hispanic college students who share their opinion of what it's
like to be a minority in the United States and face many adversities due to their Latino
culture. The book that was written gives more credibility to its audience because the
journal is much more scholarly, and by far more credible than the you tube video. The
book, shares more information, gives you more facts, and much more statistics that show
the percentage of Hispanics actually getting by college. In the book written you can say it
has proven facts, images, interviews so it is by far more credible than the you tube video
simply because the you tube shows interviews of college students, but doesn't show much
about the producers credibility. No information on educational background, college, or
nothing to prove the credibility of the producer.

GENRE ANALYSIS

Although both genres showed different ethos, pathos, and logos the genre that works
better for this class was the book written by Patricia Gandera and Frances Contreras. As I
stated before ,the reason for this was that this powerful book reveals the many
educational depths Hispanics face within the their culture when it comes to education. It
is by far more credible and scholarly than the you tube video The you tube video of
course shows more emotion due to the fact that Hispanics students are their showing
their experiences on the many obstacles they have overcome being Latino student's.
Although the You tube video connects with its audience more simply because you can
express more feelings toward the person being interviewed and can kind of see eye to eye
with the person being interviewed. It is mainly a one on one conversation about the many
barriers they have overcome. Because this minority is rapidly growing it is important that
we see different views to a story. We all have different beliefs that we can trust and go
along with it . The question we must ask ourselves how will the Hispanic culture be in 30
years from now when it pertains to higher education? Although the many obstacles
Hispanics have faced due to this topic these two genres make great points. They are both
for the Hispanic culture, but one genre delivers stronger to its audience and by far more
credible than the other.
STRUCTURE AND DELIVERY
As I stated before ,the genre that worked the best for this class was the book written by
Patricia Gandera and Frances Contreras. Although both of the genres brought up great
points they still delivered their message to the audience very differently. The use of
words, the credibility, and their knowledge is what made a difference in these two genres.
The genre with the written book gave the audience a better picture of what Hispanics face

in America trying to better and further their education among Latino students. The book
written had by far more credibility than the you tube video. It went more in to detail and
showed what the audience needed to know when it came down on facts and statistics in
Hispanics when it comes to higher education..
As stated early these two genres said a whole lot when it came down to Latinos facing
adversities in the Hispanic. Many live in poor and dangerous neighborhoods, attend
impoverished and underachieving schools, and are raised by parents who speak little
English and are the least educated of any ethnic group. My two genres both mentioned
the barriers the Hispanic cultures have had to overcome. Even when the you tube video
interviewed many Hispanic college student's the book revealed much more and gave the
audience the statistics and percentages of Hispanics now attending college.
