OnthenightofNovember13,2015asmallgroupofmilitarizedassailentswereresponsiblefor
killing130innocentciviliansinParis.OnceagainonMarch22,201631Belgiancitizenswerekilledand
300morewereinjuredinattackonthenationscapital.Inbothinstances,theattackersweremembersof
theterroristgroupISISanditwassupectedthatsomeoftheseindividualswerebroughtinwithlegitimate
Syrianrefugees.Theseattacksmayhavebeenverywellavoidedifactionshadbeentakentopreventthe
entranceofSyrianrefugeesintoEurope.Whilethesemistakeshavealreadyhadtheirimpactonthe
nationsoftheEuropeanUnionitisnottoolateforAmericanlegislationtoavoidfutureatrocitiesby
preventingtheunregulatedentranceofSyrianrefugeesintoTheUnitedStates.
ThesurgeofSyrianrefugees,andpotentialthreats,waspromptednearlyfiveyearsagowhenan
oppositionforceemergedinSyriawithhopesoftopplingtheestablishedSyriangovernmentunderthe
leadofPresidnet
BasharalAssad.Sincethencivilwarhasdestroyedthenationsinfastructure,claimed
thelivesofover470,000individuals,andhasdisplacedmorethan4millionrefugees.Warislikelyto
continueasnietherside,governmentorrebellion,haveshownanysignsoflettingup.Continuationofthe
warisalsomorelikelyasAmericaandRussia,twooftheworldssuperpowers,havetakenoppositesides
intheconflict.Unfortunately,thelongerthewargoesonthemorerefugeeswillattempttofleethenation,
andheadtowardssafetyintheformofthenationsoftheEuropeanUnionandtheUnitedStates.
ThecurrentfloodofrefugeesleavingSyriadrawsmanycomparisonstothemassexodusofJews
fromEuropeduringWorldWarII.Between1933and1939over90,000JewsescapedGermanoccupied
statesinthehopeofleavingNaziGermanybeforethebeginningoftheFinalSolution.Thisfloodof
refugeesisnowbeingcomparedtothemillionsofSyriansattemptingtoleavethedangerousbattle
groundthatismodernSyria.WhilethedramaticsurgeofSyrianrefugeesdoesprovokeparrallelstothe
holocaustonesignificantdifferenceremains,theJewishrefugeesdidnotpresentathreat.While
conspiraciesemergedduringthewarthatGermanspiescouldenterAmericawithinthecoverof
thousandsofJews,therewasnoactionableinteligencetosupportthistheory.InthecaseofSyria,the
dangerousimpactofpermittingrefugeeshasalreadybeendisplayedintheattacksofParisandBrussels.
ThroughoutthehistoryofpostWorldWarIAmerica,thenationhasbeenheldtoanexcpectation
thatitmusthelpeveryoneelse,despitetheimpacttheseactionscanhaveonthecitizensoftheUnited
States.ThispreconcievednotionmustbedetroyedinthecaseofSyrianrefugees,itistimethatAmerica
putsitowncitizensfirstanddeclinestheentranceofmoreSyrianRefugees.Closingthebordersto
refugeesistheonlylogicaldecisionastheypresentadangerousthreattothelivesofAmericansandthe
nationissimplynotpreparedtotakeonanyofthemillionsofSyriansevictedfromtheirhomes.Sincethe

attacksofSeptember11,2001Americahasbeentheprimaryfocusofattacksbyterroristsorganizations
suchasAlQaedaandISISandbyopeningthedoorstothenationtoSyrianrefugeesthegovernmentis
givinganinventationtothesegroupsandotherslikethemtostrikeagain.PresidentObamaclaimsthat
thereisnoharminadmitingWidowsandOrphansintothenation,perhapsheshouldthinkofthe
potentialwidowsandorphanswithinhisowncountryifanotherattackweretooccur.
NotonlydoestheadmittanceofSyrianrefugeespresentaphysicallthreattothelivesofUnited
Statescitizens,Americacannoteconomicallyhandlerecievingpotentiallymillionsofrefugees.Currently,
Americaisabout20trilliondollarsindebtandtheprojectedfederaldebtperpersonispredictedasbeing
nearly60thousanddollars.Pairingthesestatisticswiththenearly8millionunemployedcitizensinthe
UnitedStatesclearlydisplaysthatthelastthingtheAmericaneconomyneedsistoabsorbevenmore
individuallswhoareunpreparedtojointheworkforceandbenifitsocietyasawhole.Ratherthan
admittingmorepeopleandsettingAmericabackwards,thegovernmentshouldinsteadfocusinfixingone
ofthegreatesteconomicdepressionsinthehistoryofthenation.
WhilewarcontinuestowageinSyriaitiscriticalthattheAmericangovernmentprocedeina
logicalmannerandnotadmitSyrianrefugeesinordertosecurethelivesandwellbeingofAmerican
citizens.Whileitmayappearthatadmittingrefugeesistheproperwayofresolvingthisissue,itsimplyis
notthepropercourseofaction,ratherthantryingtocontrollthecollateraldamageofthewar,perhapsitis
timetojustendtheconflictitself.Thankyouforyourtime.
