ExerciseExperiment

Thislabreportaddressestheanalysisofrestingbaselinecomparedtoexercisedatafrom
thecardiovascularandrespiratorysystems.AEKGisaelectrocardiogramwhichisagraphical
recordingoftheelectricaleventsoccurringwithintheheart.TheEKGchecksforissuesand
problemswiththeelectricalactivityoftheheart.Duringthelabweconductedthewavesofour
individualheart.ThewaveswererepresentedbyP,R,Q,TandS.Heartratecanbechangedwith
physicalactivity.Duringphysicalactivitytheheartwillbegintobeatatafasterrate,thisis
becausethehearthastopumpmorebloodforthebody.Regularexercisemaydecreaseblood
pressure.Bloodpressureistheforceofbloodagainstthewallsofthearteriesastheheartpumps
bloodthroughoutthebody.
Lungcapacitiesarecombinationsoflungvolumes.Bothlungvolumeandlungcapacity
valuesvaryaccordingtogender,age,andheight.Lungvolumesalsovarywithexercise,butlung
capacitiesdonot.WhenrelaxedtheaverageamountofmLis500.
Duringexercise,yourbody's
productionofcarbondioxidegoesup,increasingthetidalvolumeisonewayforyourlungsto
allowtheexhalationofthisincreasedcarbondioxideload.Asthebodycontinuestoexercisethe
bodybeginstobreathehardercausingthelungstoworkharderandfaster.Workingmuscles
requirefreshair.Therateofrespirationalsoincreasestofacilitatethedeliveryofoxygentothe
bloodstream,whereitisthentransportedtotheworkingmuscles.
Wetook20millilitersoffresh
waterandwastestedforitslevelofPH.Thewaterwouldthenbeblownawaybyblowingair
intoastrawandthenwewouldtestthePHlevelsagain.Datawouldbecollectedwhichwould
showhowtheCO2levelsfoundinthebreathswerechanged.Asmallchangeoccurred.Thiswas
donebeforeandafterexercise.Afterexerciseourbreathswereshallowandquick,causinga
change.TheCO2intheexhalesmadethewateracidicthereforeraisingthePHlevels.

Question:

Willourheartrateandrespiratorysystembeaffectedbythethreeminutesofcontinuous
exercise?

Hypothesis:
Whenwebecomeinvolvedwithphysicalactivityitisexpectedfortheheartrateandrespiratory
systemtoincrease.Ourhearthastoadjusttotheamountofexerciseandisresponsiblefor
pumpingenoughbloodthroughthebody.Wemaybecomeshortofbreathduetoourlungs
tryingtokeepupwithourheart.

SafetyInformation:COnsideringthislabinvolvedphysicalactivityitwillbeimportanttotake
precautionduringlab.Itisimportanttoremoveandobjectstohinderyouactivityormaybe
dangerousactivity.Giveyourselfalargeamountofopenspace,becautiousofunsteadinessorif
youbecomelightheadedduetolowamountsofoxygen.Wearappropriateclothingandshoesto
whereyouareabletoconductactivityadequately.WearsafetygoggleswhendealingPHliquid
substance.Cleanuptheareaandsanitizeappropriately.

DuringtheEKGlab,wetookthelabquestreaderandattachedtothestickerreaderstothe
appropriatelocations.Thisallowedustoreceiveaatrestheartratereading.Thesameprocesses
wasconductedafterthreeminutesofcontinuousintenseexercise.Itwasexpectedthattheheart
ratewillincreaseaftertheexercise,whichwasproventrue.ThepHlabwasconductedatrest
andaftercontinuousexercise.TheprobewassoakedinthepHsubstance.Studentsweretoplace
astrawinstillwaterandblowandproducebubbles.Afterthistheprobewasremovedfromthe
pHsolutionandrinsedandplacedintothebubbledwater.Studentsrecordedreaction.The
spirometerlabwasalsoconductedatrestandaftercontinuousexercise.Studentsweretoblow
airintothespirometerandrecordtheamountofairblownatrestwithanormalbreathe.After
threeminutesofexercisethesameexperimentwasconducted.Inmypersonalresponse,I
experiencedthatIwasabletofillthespirometerupmoreduetomylungsworkinghardto
supplymybodywithfreshoxygen.

Analysisofcardiovasculardata
Youcanseeinthegraphsandchartabovethatexercisedidhaveaneffectonthecardiovascular
system.Asaclassweretookourrestingdatabeforeourexercisedataandrecordedourresults.
Afterexercisingthewavesofourheartbeatwentthroughadirectchange.Afterhavingdirect
exerciseourheartbeatexperiencedadirectchangeandincreasedfrom70bpmto117bpm.The
heartrateincreasedtoafasterrapidbeatduetothehearttryingtoreplenishoxygentothebody
andlungs.Achangeintheheartwaveschangedafterexercise.Youcanvisulizethisinwaves
PR,QRS,QT,andwaveR.Allofthesewavesexperiencedanincreaseinquicknessand
rapidness.Thiswasduetotheheartworkinghardertopumpbloodandfreshoxygenthroughout
thebody.

AnalysisofRespiratoryData:
Asaclasswewereabletocollectdatatounderstandhowourrespiratorysystemisaffectedby
exercise.Thelungcapacitywasmeasuredinthreedifferentcasesandrecordedoverthreetrials.
Thebaselinedatawascollectedpriortotheexercise.Tocollecttheexercisedatawewereto
exerciseforaconstantthreeminutes.Thisresultedinusgettingratherlargenumbers.The
columnthatshowstheaveragesrevealsthesimplestandmostpressingchanges.Youcanseethe
overalldatadecreasedrastically.Thisisaresultfromoxygenleavingyourbodyatamuch
quickerpaceduringyourexercise.Yourrespiratoryorganswillbeworkinghardertoreplenish
freshoxygenbackintoyourbody.Yourlungswillnotbeabletofillbackuptotheirfull
capacity.Thiswillcauseyounottobeabletoexhaleasmuchairasyouwouldatrest.Breathing
fastcausesquickshallowbreathsopposedtodeepones.PHisacomponentinthislabaswell.
Wetook20millilitersoffreshwaterandwastestedforitslevelofPH.Thewaterwouldthenbe
blownawaybyblowingairintoastrawandthenwewouldtestthePHlevelsagain.Datawould

becollectedwhichwouldshowhowtheCO2levelsfoundinthebreathswerechanged.Asmall
changeoccurred.Thiswasdonebeforeandafterexercise.Afterexerciseourbreathswere
shallowandquick,causingachange.TheCO2intheexhalesmadethewateracidictherefore
raisingthePHlevels.
