Science: 1-LS1 From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes

LS1.A: Structure and Function
All organisms have external parts. Different animals use their body parts in
different ways to see, hear, grasp objects, protect themselves, move from
place to
place, and seek, find, and take in food, water and air. Plants also
have different
parts (roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits) that help them survive
and grow.
6. Materials: Whistle, and small pictures of animals (print outs), one for each student.
Some lions, some birds, some monkeys, and some elephants.
7. Description of Activity:
a. Teacher will have small print outs of animal pictures ready. There will be one print
out for each student. There will be four types of animal pictures: lions, birds,
monkeys, and elephants. If there are 20 students, 5 students will get pictures of lions,
5 students will get pictures of birds, 5 students will get pictures of monkeys, and 5
students will get pictures of elephants.
b. Teacher will explain to the students that she/he will pass out one picture to each
student, but they CANNOT show any other student what picture they got.
c. Teacher will tell the students to look at their picture and think about what kind of
sounds and movements that animal makes. Teacher will give students 1 minute to
think about this.
d. Teacher will tell the students to hide the picture inside their desks.
e. Teacher will tell the students to stand up and gather in a cleared area.
f. Teacher will tell the students that at the sound of the whistle, the students have to start
making the sounds and movements of the animal that was in their picture, but they
CANNOT yell out the name of the animal they got.
g. Teacher will also explain to the students that as they are imitating their animal, they
have to find other students who are imitating the same animal they have and form a
group.
h. Teacher blows whistle and gives the students about 3-4 minutes to find their group
with the same animal.
i. After teacher sees that the groups are formed, she/he will ask the students to stop
imitating the animal. Then, she/he will go to each group and ask them to share with

the class what animal they were and to imitate that animal one more time for the
class.
j. Students can now go back to their desk.
8. Follow-up Activities: Teacher can ask the students how did they know which students
had the same animal as them. Teacher can ask the students what other animals they can
imitate. Teacher can show the class videos of animals. This can be an activity played
before or after a field trip to the zoo.
9. Assessment: Are the students all participating? Can the teacher tell what animals the
students are imitating? Do the students even know how to imitate the animals? Can the
students find other students with the same animals as them? Are they taking too long to
find their groups? If they are taking too long, why are they taking a while?
