L-1-5 Demonstrate knowledge and ability to identify, manage and report

signs and/or symptoms of abuse of pediatric client according to agency
policy

One significant learning experience in this course related to this

competency was learning the signs and symptoms of abuse, particularly
the ones that are not obvious. For example I did not know that bruising
on the ears are a sign of abuse since it would be difficult for the child to
bruise there on their own.

I learned that the greatest risk of abuse is the presence of a nonbiological parent and that abuse in the first 3 years of life can

Fair: understands the competency in theory; unable to apply it to

scenarios or nursing practice.
To achieve this competency I attended theory classes regularly and
studied on my own time from the textbook. I received this competency
since there is no lab component to this class and have yet to use this
competency in practice.

I will apply this learning in clinicals to assess the children in my care for
any signs of abuse after reviewing agency policies on the issue. As for
future nursing practice I am sure that I will use the information learned
in this class on the topic of child abuse to help prevent further abuse and
possibly help beyond the surface medical issues. As a nurse, any
suspected abuse is a mandatory report issue and learning the signs and
