World War II

Battle of
Sicily
We landed on the shores of Sicily
and we were immediately hit with
the German defence. This was my
first battle entering the war and I
was terrified. I believed I would
face death at any moments as
many of my comrades did on the
beach. I was very lucky to be one
of the survivors who helped take
the beach. With only a few days
rest we moved further inland for
even more violent fighting.

Operation Gomorrah
July 24 1943

The Allied bombing of

Hamburg during World War II
included many strategic air
raids. The attack during the
last week of July
1943,Operation Gomorrah,
created one of the largest
firestorms made by the royal
air force and the U.S. air
force during World War II.
The optimal weather
conditions made the bombing
very accurate, but the 1500
foot tall fire tornado was an
unexpected effect. This air
raid inflicted severe damage
to German production in
Hamburg.

Were entering another battle
within Italy. I am pushing through
Salerno now with the rest of my
unit. We are constantly facing
German assault and everyone is
on their toes. One thing has been
proven within this battle and thats
that Italy is not the soft underbelly
of Europe.

Battle of Salerno

This is my M1917 Enfield, there are many like it but this one
is mine. I, like all other soldiers, carried it in every battle I
fought in. It kept me alive through many of those battles. It
shoots .30 caliber bullets. Weighing in at nine pounds three
ounces, it got heavy while carrying it across the battlefield.

June 6, 1944
D-Day

This was undoubtedly one of the

bloodiest and most violent battles
within World War II. I have never
been so horrified as watching the
endless swarms of people be
gunned down in the water. I was
placed at the back of the platoon
and unlike the rest of my unit I
survived the machine gun bullets. It
was a very slow victory but we
ended up forcing the Germans
back. We forced the Germans out
of France. The allied leaders are
saying this is giving us a better
foothold in Europe, hopefully this
war is coming to a close.

I was giving this medal after the wound I sustained

during the war. I was shot in my left shoulder blade. I
sustained this wound while entering the beach. I
would have bled out if a fellow soldier hadnt stopped
the bleeding.

Battle of The Bulge

December 16, 1944 - January 25, 1945

This was the largest battle us as Americans had to face. During this battle I
helped lead my allies to safety and was moved up in rank. This was another
hard fought victory for the U.S. and allies. We were terrified the Germans
were going to break the lines but we held up in the end. The victory was
sweet and helped pave the way for the allied victory even though the cost
was over one hundred thousand American lives.

The battle of the bulge was the

largest fight for the Americans
within WWII. The American front
line got pushed back making the
line form a bulge. There were over
110,000 American casualties. This
was an unexpected attack by the
Germans since it was believed they
didn't have enough troops for this
last push. The battle ended in an
American victory.

This is my uniform. I wore it in

every battle i fought in, it even has
the bullet hole in the left shoulder
blade. My purple heart is on it as
well. Every American on the
battlefield, of the same rank, wore
these into battle.

Adolf Hitler was declared

dead by suicide on April 30,
1945. He committed suicide
while the Russian forces
pushed in on Berlin. He and
his wife killed themselves
and their dog in the personal
bunker in Berlin. German
stated the war would not end
from this. Although Churchill
later hinted at peace since
the Germans lost their
leader.

The war ended in

September 2nd, 1945.
Soon after the death of
Hitler the Germans began
talking of peace. Italy had
surrendered much earlier
with the death of Mussolini.
Japan has also agreed for
surrender after two nuclear
bomb were dropped, one
on Hiroshima and the other
on Nagasaki.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt: D-Day Prayer

I like this speech because it accurately describes what
Americans were going through and what they were trying to
accomplish. It talks about how hards its going to be for the
soldiers heading into battle and why we are going to war. The
Americans didnt fight for conquest they fought for peace, to
end conquest. It was a touching speech that gave people
waiting for their families hope and improved morale. It was a
good prayer to help us defeat our unholy enemy.
