(3 grade)

Math
Standard: 16.) Tell and write time to the nearest minute,
and measure time intervals in minutes. Solve word problems
involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in
minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number line
diagram. [3-MD1]

Objective: When given a word problem involving content

from The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane & time
intervals students will create their own problem and number
line diagram with 100% accuracy.

Activity: Teacher will give students the following problem:

If it was 11:00 a.m. when Lawrence rescued Edward from the
bottom of the ocean and it was 2:00 p.m. when they arrived
at Nellie and Lawrences house, how long did it take them to
get home? as an example. Students will work with a partner
to solve this problem. Then students will create their own time
interval problem in minutes.

(See problem and answer below)

1 hour = 60 minutes
60 minutes + 60 minutes + 60 minutes = 180
minutes

Science
Standard: 4.) Define force and motion
Describing the force of gravity
Objective: Students will describe the effects of gravity on
the Earth through a writing prompt.

Activity: After completing a lesson on gravity, the students

will have an understanding on the affects gravity has on
Earth. They will be able to define that gravity is the force that
exists between any two objects that have mass. How much
something weighs depends on how strongly gravity is pulling
on ittherefore our weight is different on the moon but our
mass is the same. What happens when this gravitational force
is not there? The teacher will propose this writing prompt:
The Earth suddenly unexpectedly looses all gravity.
Describe what happens.
Students will respond on the writing paper following this page.
The teacher can provide the example of Edward Tulane falling
from the boatwhat if the Earth lost its gravitational pull at
that very moment? Would Edward have fallen the same way?

Art
Standard: 8.) Identify ideas and
feelings expressed by individual
artists in works of art.

Objective: When given crayons, markers, and other arts &

crafts materials, students will be able to portray emotion
through their drawing.

Activity: Teacher will have students draw a picture of

Edward in a certain scene from the book. Depending on the
scene, Edward Tulane will be feeling a different emotion.
Teacher and students will discuss that different colors can
represent emotions. As a real life example, teacher can talk
about the different characters in Inside Out disgust is green,
angry is red, joy is yellow, scared is purple, and afraid is blue.
Teacher will also ask class as a fun/silly activity to sit in a
circle and all at once make their best sad face or happy face
(etc.) as a chance to get up and moving. After students have
an understanding of color and expressions relating to emotion
Teacher will then ask students to think about different scenes
from the book. As a pre-drawing activity students can
complete the Making Movies worksheet. After recalling
scenes from the book, the teacher will show students an
example, made previously by her, of Edward Tulane when he
was very afraid and stuck in the ocean. Before explaining the
scene the teacher will question students to give them an
opportunity to predict what scene this is and what emotions
Edward was feeling.

Music
Standard: 11.) Identify the four families of instruments
in an orchestra.
Objective: When an excerpt from a harmonica is played,
students will be able to identify that instrument sound as part
of the woodwind family.

Activity: The teacher will play an excerpt musical piece

from a harmonica. She will also play selections from a guitar,
flute, and a percussion instrument. Students will then decide
which musical sound they heard was a harmonica and identify
that instrument is a part of the woodwind family.

Social Studies
Standard: 3.) Describe ways the
environment is affected by humans in
Alabama and the world.
Objective: Students will list ways in
which humans negatively affect the world
around them by observing their neighborhood streets.

Activity: Students will observe their neighborhoods by car

with their parents or on foot. They will be looking to see if
there is a lot of liter and if so, if it is degradable (food) or if it
is soda cans, paper things that negatively affect our
environment. Students will observe this for a week and take
notes of the trash they see. At the end of the week, students
will share what they saw. Teacher will then discuss how
Edward was in a dump and the negative affect landfills are
having on our world.

Technology
Standard: 12.) Create a product using digital tools.
Objective: Students will describe character traits of a
character of their choice through making a Facebook profile
page.

Activity: Teacher will lead students in multiple character

brain storming activity handouts, Understanding the
Character and Inference-Interview. After students have
time to get inside their characters brainthey will then get to
create their own Facebook page for their character! This will
be an online template but with room for individual creativity.
