LEARNING TASK 4

VAPOR COMPRESSION REFRIGERATION CYCLE

PROBLEM:
An ideal vapour-compression refrigeration cycle, with ammonia as
the working fluid, has an evaporator temperature of -20C, and a
condenser pressure of 12 bar. Saturated vapour enters the compressor,
and saturated liquid exits the condenser. The mass flow rate of the
refrigerant is 3 kg/min.
a)

Determine the COP of the refrigerator and net rate of heat removal
from the cold box.

b)

Determine the rate of heat rejected to the ambient.

GIVEN:
T2 = T4 = -20C
P2 = P3 = 12 bar
Reqd:
a) COP, Qc
b) QR

SOLUTION:
@ T1 = -20C, satd vapor:
h1 = 1417.79 kJ/kg
s1 = 5.6144 kJ/kg-K
1

Isentropic compression:

s2 = s1 = 5.6144 kJ/kg-K
@ P2 = 12 bar, s2 = 5.6144 kJ/kg-K,
superheated:
s (kJ/kg-K)
h (kJ/kg)
5.5315

1657.71

5.6144

h2

5.6620

1707.70

By interpolation:
h2 = 1689.75 kJ/kg

@ P3 = 12 bar, satd liquid:

h3 = 327.01 kJ/kg
3

Isenthalpic

h3 = h4 = 327.01 kJ/kg

Solving for the rate of heat rejected into the atmosphere:

AIR STANDARD
Assume a refrigeration cycle with reversible
adiabatic compressor and expander. For this cycle
the low pressure is 100 kPa and the high pressure
is 1.4 MPa with constant pressure heat
exchangers, see the T-s diagram on the next
slide. The temperatures are T4=T6=-50C and
T1=T3=15C. Find the COP for this refrigeration
cycle.

DIAGRAM

T4 =T6= -50C=223.15 K
T1 =T3= 15C=288.15 K
P1= 100 kPa
P2= 1.4 MPa = 1400 kPa
