This Land Is Your Land: Linocut Printmaking Unit

Through the use of high contrast, line weight variety, and engaging compositions,
students will create a linocut block print based on our natural world that evokes an
emotion for the viewer of the piece.
-Select a photo you have taken or use one of the drawings you created
-you may print your photo and use the light table to copy the critical lines in the
photo
-Create a dynamic viewpoint or composition
-Select an image/sketch that has a large range of values and textures
**You will create a linocut print with a print image size of 8 x 10

Suggested Research Ideas:

Earth Day: The first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, mobilized 20 million Americans from all walks of life.

Their actions led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean
Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. Today, over one billion people in 192 countries participate
in Earth Day activities, making it the largest civic observance in the world.

4-H: (Head, Heart, Hands, Health) or other service organizations

Greenpeace, Audubon, Sierra Club: or other organizations who focus on our natural world

Linocut Steps:
Transfer image to the Linoleum Block using a graphite transfer process
Remember Image will print in reverse so you want to transfer your image backwards
on the linoleum block. You will only receive one linoleum block, so carefully plan your
image before you begin cutting
Trace your lines with Sharpie marker
Paint over entire surface with watered down ink so you are still able to see the marker
lines through the ink
Using a variety of gougers, create textures and a full range of values throughout your
image
Must have a background field of texture or value or a setting with few or no negative
white spaces.
Use a full range of values to create the illusion of three-dimensionality in your work
Your composition should blow off the page on 2 or more edges

Your work should demonstrate accurate proportions and details

This Earth Day, lets get really big stuff done for our planet.
What are we waiting for? The time is now.

The movement continues.

We are now entering the 46th year of a movement that continues to inspire, challenge ideas, ignite
passion, and motivate people to action.
In 1970, the year of our first Earth Day, the movement gave voice to an emerging consciousness,
channeling human energy toward environmental issues. Forty-six years later, we continue to lead with
groundbreaking ideas and by the power of our example.
And so it begins. Today. Right here and right now. Earth Day is more than just a single day April 22,
2016. Its bigger than attending a rally and taking a stand.
This Earth Day and beyond, lets make big stuff happen. Lets plant 7.8 billion trees for the Earth. Lets
divest from fossil fuels and make cities 100% renewable. Lets take the momentum from the Paris Climate
Summit and build on it.
Lets start now. And lets not stop.
