My Trip:

Maungakiekie
4 May 2016
By Scarlett

Pre-trip Activity
Before our trip we discussed what a landform was and how it
was made. We also researched about Maungakiekie and
shared our ideas with the rest of the class.

Interesting facts from my research about

Maungakiekie

1.The mountain covers an area of twenty kilometres

2.Maungakiekie is the second largest volcano in
Aucklands volcanic field
3.The trees to be planted at the top of the mountain this year
will be totara and pohutukawa

Post Trip Activities

After our trip we discussed what we had learnt and
what we found particularly interesting. At art we looked
at our sketches and decided on our favourites that we
wanted to paint.

Brief summary of what we did on

ourourtrip
During
trip we walked a little way round the mountain and then up
to the summit, where we did our sketching for art. On our trek up the
mountain, our guide Phillipa talked to us about the three craters on the
mountain. It was extremely interesting. After our sketching at the top,
where the views were spectacular, we walked down to the star dome
where we had a talk about the moon and how it orbits earth. We then
watched an informative short film about weather on other planets.

3 new things I learned about

Maungakiekie The western
The sheep

Hardly anyone
lived at the top.

When Maori people

inhabited the mountain,
pretty much nobody lived
at the top, because it was
extremely exposed to the
elements. One chief,
however, Kiwi Tamaki, did
dare to live at the top. (he
was quite a show off)

crater was once

a garden

When Maori lived on the

mountain, they used the
western crater as their
garden, because that it is
a micro-climate and ideal
for growing kumara and
other vegetables.

maintain the
grass

It seems weird that sheep

should be allowed to
graze on a cultural
heritage site, but the
reason they are kept on
Maungakiekie is because
that they keep grass from
overgrowing.

3 new things I learned at Star

Dome
Without the
1

That on Titan it rains

methane

On titan, one of saturns

moons, there are lakes,
rivers, and seas full of
methane. This is because
that the atmosphere is
methane , and when it
becomes cold enough it
condenses into liquid.

sun,waves on earth
would be huge

Because of the gravity on the

moon and sun, both are
constantly pulling earth towards
themselves, but because the
moon is on one side and the sun
is one the other, earth does not
move because its being pulled
equally. If the sun wasnt there,
though, the moon would still pull
and waves would actually
completely engulf it!

The black hole is

quite good

Because the black hole is

sucking everything in, it
keeps the solar system in
place and stops all the
planets from dispersing
randomly.

My favourite part of our trip

My favourite part of the trip was sketching at the top, because the view
was so amazing from every angle and we got to have a break from
walking. It was a good day to go because in the distance mist curled
round the land and it was beautiful to sketch.
