Workplace Reflection
I listened to Rachael Whites interview as she was in Event Management. She went straight to
University like anybody else after she graduated high school, but she didnt know what she
wanted to do for the future so she did Commerce. After a while she wasnt comfortable and she
realised that it doesnt suit her well so she quit University and got a job in a restaurant as a kitchen
hand. Then she changes her mind to go back to University again and took Bachelor of Hotel
Management at Griffith and she took the Fast Track Program. After she graduated in Hotel
Management she took Master of Business in Event Management as well
I think what I can improve from Rachael Whites from listening to her interview is that first of all,
now a days in High School they actually ask you what you want to do in the future starting from
Grade 11. If I was her, before I chose which degree I want to do, I need to find out and learn about
what commerce is, what program theyre doing, what kind of major are there that I can take in
the future, which program that interests me best, what are they focusing on? What do they teach
you in commerce? She needs to know how could this major help her in future to get a job? Is this
what she wanted to do? Or she just does it because theres no other choice? She has to know what
she likes. For example, if Im really good in Music and really bad at Art, will I take the Art as my
major? No, but Im going to improve at what Im good at. And again if I was her, Im going to
stick with what I chose in the beginning which is doing Bachelor of Business in Commerce. I
think she just wasted her time and money at the same time. At the end now she graduated with 2
Majors, which are Bachelor of Hotel Management and Master of Business in Event Management.
Although, this also helps her pursue to progress from her current position.
What I needed to do up until the time of my expected graduation to position myself for graduate
employment is to do work experience or be involved in a volunteering position as it can be a tool
and way to help me out in the future and also it make them see what I can do and probably they
will provide a position in the future. In an event industry, it will be hard to get a job if I didnt start
to find experience from now because events are both practical and theory based. For example,
even though I wanted to work as Director of Marketing one day and I cant get a marketing
experiences at least be in a 5 stars hotel to have the knowledge of how they operate and also
creating a network because someday it can be useful, especially in the event management industry,
theyre all are very connected. Thinking outside the box may as well help me out to get creative
and also go out and talk to different person to share and get more ideas and knowledge and being
smart about my use of social media. Its really just getting myself out there. The main thing that I
can improve from Rachael White is stay organise from the beginning. She wasnt organised to
start with and need to be confident with what she have decided to do.
