Difference between topics and theme statements

Procedures

-Instructor will go over steps of how to write a theme statement;


students will take notes (3)
-Instructor will read-aloud The Giving Tree (4)
-Instructor will guide students through each step of how to write a
theme statement for The Giving Tree (15)
-Students will then be instructed to brainstorm The Alchemist topics
with a partner. Instructor will add these to a list, while a student does
the same on a poster. (10)
-Next, instructor will share the topics he/she has (2)
-Students will be asked to access the Discovering Theme graphic
organizer and fill out with a partner, writing their own theme statements
(15 mins)
-Each partnership will read-aloud their theme statement and write on
the poster under our topics.
Exit ticket:
How do you feel about your ability to identify topics in a story? What
about writing a theme statement? Rate both on a scale of 1-5, 1 being I
dont understand and 5 being I understand. You should have two
numbers here.
