3 Note Major 251s

www.pianogroove.com

The 251 is the most common progression in jazz music. The following 3 note voicings are
the most basic way to voice a major 251 progression and allow you to see and understand
the voice leading (7ths dropping to become 3rds of the next chord).

251 in C

251 in F

251 in Bb

251 in Eb

251 in Ab

251 in Db

Type A

Type B

251 in Gb

251 in B

251 in E

251 in A

251 in D

251 in G

Practise Tips
Make sure you practice both Type A and Type B voicings. As you play, say the name of the chord outloud
to develop an association between the name of the chord and how it looks, feels and sounds. Once you
have memorised the notes, practice without the music and slowly build up the speed with a metronome.

7th Chords In All 12 Keys

www.pianogroove.com

7th chords are triads which have been extended to include the 7th degree of the scale. The
additional 7th degree creates a much richer sound than the triad and 7th chords form the
basis for studying extended harmony. The following notation is just for guidance; try to
learn these chords by memory as soon as possible.

Practise Tips
Remember to say the name of the chord out loud every time you change chord. This will help you
associate the name of the chord with the hand shape. Also look at the chord symbol above the stave as
you say and play the chord to develop a visual association with the symbol. Practice these groups of 7th
chord around the circle of 5ths and then chromatically ie. C, Db, D, Eb, E etc..
Once you are familiar with the chords in root position, the next step is to practise the inversions. Each
chord has 3 possible inversions 1st inversion, 2nd inversion and 3rd inversion. This step is very important so dont skip this!

Minor 251 Progression in all 12 Keys

www.pianogroove.com

Minor scale harmony is much more complex than major scale harmony and so it will take more
time and patience to learn and memorise these minor 251 progressions. The voicings presented
in this worksheet are the rst minor 251s you should learn:

Type A Voicings
A Minor

D Minor

G Minor

C Minor

F Minor

Bb Minor

Type B Voicings

Eb Minor

Ab Minor

C# Minor

F# Minor

B Minor

E Minor

First of play through the voicings in all 12 keys and familiarise yourself with the shape and sounds of these minor
251s. Once you have played them trough a few times, try to memorise them so you dont need to read the music.
Also practise saying the same of the chords aloud when you play them - this will help you associate the name of the
chord with its shape and sound.
2) Next set your metronome to 60 bpm and play through the minor 251s in time. Once you can play the voicings
com- fortably at 60 bpm, increase the tempo in increments of 10 bpm until you can play these chords comfortable
at 120 bpm
3) Using the iRealPro app, download the minor 251 practise exercises from the forum and play these 251s in swing
time. Practise playing the chords on dierent beats of the bar (not always on beat 1). Next try comping with the
chords by playing some of them multiple times per bar and by syncopating the rhythm .
