Best jobs for computer science majors by salary potential
-Defining the differences between analysts, programmers, developers, and engineers-

By Alysha Lagaras

CSIS 1030 Spring 2016

The reason why I am taking this class in the first place is to minor in a Computer
Science degree. I made the choice by realizing that the technology industry is growing extremely fast.
I also have a fascination in the tech field, and decided that it is the right choice to have this on my
resume and my background.
While salaries for some roles vary widely by location, industry, experience level, and
demand. While Software Developer is only #4 in salary.coms 8 hottest jobs of 2014 list in terms of
growth rate (demand), it probably goes without saying that there are many well-paying career
opportunities in Computer Science and IT (Information Technology) in general.

There are also different career titles in the Computer Science degree, as in,
programming, developer, analysts, and engineers that I would like to describe more about in my paper.
The definition for analyst in project development, it means a person who documents the
current system, finding its problems and areas for improvement. System analysts determine the
requirements of end users, especially naive and parametric end users, and develop specifications for
standard canned transactions that meet these requirements.
A developer means that a professional involved in the creation of the product, from
initiating, contributing, and presenting ideas, through perfection of design and completion. A software
developer creates software for commercial purposes, such as managing the inventory for a small
business or editing a media file, and considered to be a computer game designer who can also create
games that can be played on computers.
A programmer is a professional hired to produce a computer program. Knows how to
write code, understands algorithms and is able to follow specifications. Application programmers
implement these specifications as programs; then they test, debug, document, and maintain these
canned transactions.

What is a software engineer? A professional hired to produce a computer program.

Knows how to write code, understands algorithms and is able to follow specifications involved in all
stages of the three. Software engineers ensure the delivery of high quality software, with a focus on
testing their products. They develop and deliver innovative high quality software. There are more than
31,000 vacancies for software engineers, a position that offers an average salary of $99,000 annually.
A computer science major would be implementing the knowledge of programming
language in order to build software, as well as an understanding of computer hardware and network
systems. While the fundamental concepts of computer science are mathematics and coding
disciplines not too often thought of as particularly creative, there is indeed a certain amount of
creative thinking and ingenuity that is necessary to be a successful computer science major.
