ISTE Standard(s) Addressed in Unit One:

Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity (Standards for Teachers)
ISTE Standards for Teachers
http://www.iste.org/standards/standards-for-teachers
1. Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity
Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to
facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face
and virtual environments.
Creativity and innovation (Standards for Students)
ISTE Standards for Students
http://www.iste.org/standards/standards-for-students
1. Creativity and innovation
Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products
and processes using technology.
Critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making (Standards for Students)
ISTE Standards for Students

4. Critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making
Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve
problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources.

Within each of the Standards, you will note the sub-standard designation. Please rate your own success towards meeting this
standard within your Final Project as a Personal Rating using the following delineation:

Rating Scale
1
Absent-component is missing
2
Unsatisfactory-needs significant improvement
3
Somewhat satisfactory-needs targeted improvements
4
Satisfactory-discretionary improvement needed
4
Very satisfactory-no improvement needed
As well, please explain your Personal Rating designation and thoughts within the Personal Reflection area.

technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and
innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments.

Sub-Standard

a. Promote, support, and model

creative and innovative thinking and
inventiveness.
b. Engage students in exploring realworld issues and solving authentic
problems using digital tools and
resources.

c. Promote student reflection using

collaborative tools to reveal and
clarify students conceptual
understanding and thinking,
planning, and creative processes.
d. Model collaborative knowledge
construction by engaging in learning
with students, colleagues, and
others in face-to-face and virtual
environments.

Personal
Reflection
This substandard is effective since it
addresses not only to promote and support
learning and creativity, but most importantly
to model. Modeling is a piece that many
teachers underestimate.
It is important for teachers to expose
students to issues beyond the classroom
so they can develop problem-solving skills.
The Horizon Reports address how school
are involve in collaborative learning
projects where technology is utilize to allow
students to explore and solve such
problems.

The Reports explain how teacher

training is essential so that they can
serve as an avenue for students to take
ownership of their learning.

The Horizon Reports emphasize the

importance of collaborative learning and
explain how high performance schools
spend a great amount of time working
in groups. Therefore, effective
government policies are necessary to
promote and incorporate collaborative
learning among teachers and students.

Creativity and innovation (Standards for Students)

1. Creativity and innovation
Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop
innovative products and processes using technology.
Sub-Standard

a. Apply existing knowledge to

generate new ideas, products, or
processes.

b. Create original works as a means of

personal or group expression.

c. Use models and simulations to

explore complex systems and
issues.

d. Identify trends and forecast

possibilities.

Personal
Reflection
It is very well explained, in the Reports,
how educators are pulling away from
traditional pen-paper testing and
allowing students to show their
knowledge and understanding through
final products.
By allowing students to generate new
ideas, new products will be created.
Therefore, The Horizon Reports states
that it has been necessary to draw new
policies to protect the creation of both
students and teachers.
By using simulations students can
experience real life scenarios in a
controlled environment while still being
in school.
The panel, composed of 56 individuals,
focuses on the impacts that technology
will have on education in the next five
years. This analysis is not simple and in
the Horizon Reports, concerns are
addressed while positives are
highlighted.

4. Critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making
Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage
projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate
digital tools and resources.
Sub-Standard

a. Identify and define authentic

problems and significant questions
for investigation.

b. Plan and manage activities to

develop a solution or complete a
project.

c. Collect and analyze data to identify

solutions and/or make informed
decisions.

d. Use multiple processes and diverse

perspectives to explore alternative
solutions.

Personal
Reflection
Technology is making global problems
more tangible and at the same time
permitting students to ask and answer
questions in order to find solutions.
The Horizon Reports gave several
examples where students used critical
thinking and collaboration to find solutions
while working on a project-based
assignment. A key element in these
projects was technology since it helped the
students research as well as the testing
and production of a final product.

The Horizon Reports gave ample

examples on how students, teachers
and administrators use data as a
means to solve problems.
Technology provides students with
different alternatives to find solutions to
local and global problems in a tangible
manner.
