Biology 102
In the video called the story of stuff, it simply explains that making real
change starts with changing the game. It explains that all the stuff moves to a
system from extraction to production to distribution to consumption to
disposal. The truth about this is that the system in crisis because it is a liner
system and this system is interaction with government, society, economy, and
environment. This system is bumping against the limits. One of the
governmental problems we face is that more of 5o percent of U.S.A federal
taxes money goes to the military. The government should be working for the
people but because the corporations are much larger now, the government
action has changed in favor to those corporations. Extraction is fancy word for
trashing theplant.tis lead to tat we are running out of resources because we are
using too much stuff. The problem in United States is that people are using
more than their share. United States is using 30 percent of the world natural
recourses. And their solution to this is taking the third worlds natural
resources. If dont own or buy stuff you dont have value. This stuff moves to
production where we use energy to make toxic contaminated products. One of
the examples is Brominated flame retardants. B.F.R are super toxic and used in
the production of pillows. The food with the highest level of chemical toxic is
human breast milk that means that we reach a point that our babies getting
toxic chemicals from their mothers milk which should be the safest nutrition on
earth. This video explains that 2000 people a day are moving from an
environment to another looking from work no matter how toxic that work
maybe. The whole community is wasted by this. This toxic in and toxic out
problem has led to another problem which is pollution. United states think they
save their country by moving the dirty factories to third counties and pollute
their lands but that pollution comes right back at us by wind. Consumption goal
is keep the prices down and keep the people buying which keep the inventory
moving. This is all about externalizing the costs which means that we are not
paying for the stuff we buy. People that are not getting their benefits are the
one paying for it. Our value is measured by how much we consume. Another
word to this is that 99 percent of the products that run into the system are
trashed. It wasnt like these 50 years ago, shortly after World War II,
corporations created a solution which keep us buying stuff that we dont need.
The speaker explained that the government made the people thinks that what
they need and the ultimate purpose is consumer goods not any other benefits
such as education, or heath care. They used two strategies are planned

obsolescence and perceived obsolescence. Planned obsolescence means

making stuff that is useless. If tiny little piece is missing people throw the
whole thing and get a new one. The perceived obsolescence is convincing us to
throw stuff that is completely fine using fashion and people wanting to fit in.
the last part is disposal , the speaker explains that each of us throw 4.5 lbs a
day of garbage. It explains that burning the garbage makes super toxic and
release it into the air like dioxin. Recycling does help but not enough because
most of the garbage cant be recycled. It is a system crisis; people created this
liner system and can fix it too.
