Plan of Salvation

The current plan of salvation.

The plan of salvation is the very core of the gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints. The following diagram should be very familiar to members of the church young and old.

• We existed before being born on this earth as spirit children of a loving Heavenly Father.
• We are born on the earth in a state of probation to see if we can be faithful to Heavenly
Father’s commandments.
• When we die, those who are righteous go to paradise and those without the gospel live in
spirit prison.
• Missionary work was started at the death of the savior and people in spirit prison have an
opportunity to accept the gospel and be redeemed, if they did not have the chance on
earth.
• All will be resurrected to stand at the judgment bar of God to be judged for their lives and
assigned to one of three degrees of glory or to be cast out into outer darkness.
• The only people who will be subject to the devil are the original one-third host of heaven
who were cast out and the sons of perdition.
• The telestial kingdom will have the presence of the Holy Ghost. The terrestrial kingdom
will have the presence of Jesus Christ. The celestial kingdom will have the presence of
God.

The Book of Mormon plan of salvation.

The plan of salvation taught in the Book of Mormon does vary somewhat from the plan of
salvation taught in the lesson manuals of the Church today.

The plan of salvation in the Book of Mormon was consistently taught for more than 1,000 years
by at least 12 prophets who were given this doctrine, in most cases, directly by angels or the
voice of the Lord himself. Ultimately the plan of salvation taught in the Book of Mormon was
reaffirmed by Jesus himself when he visited the American continent.

The Book of Mormon plan of salvation includes the following elements:

• Salvation comes through accepting Jesus Christ, repenting of your sins, being baptized,
doing good works and enduring to the end.
• Upon death, followers of Christ enter into a “state of happiness, called paradise”, while
all others shall be “cast into outer darkness” to await the resurrection and judgment,
“being led captive by the will of the devil”.
• All people will be resurrected “to stand before God, to be judged of their works”.
• “If they be good, to the resurrection of endless life and happiness; and if they be evil, to
the resurrection of endless damnation, being delivered up to the devil, who hath
subjected them, which is damnation—“
• After the resurrection, all those who do not enter into heaven are cast into hell and are
subject to the devil for eternity.

Followers of Christ
who have repented
of their sins, been
baptized and
endured to the end
after all they can do.
And those who have
died without the law
(i.e., children).

All others, including

the wicked (i.e.,
murderers) and those
who did not accept
Christ or followers
of Christ who did
not endure to the
end.
Why is eternal punishment necessary in the Book of Mormon plan of salvation?

The Book of Mormon also teaches why eternal punishment is necessary and why those who are
wicked must be cast into hell forever and be subject to the devil. Alma taught his son Coriantum
the following:

Alma 41: 13 Therefore, according to justice, the plan of redemption could not be brought
about, only on conditions of repentance of men in this probationary state, yea, this
preparatory state; for except it were for these conditions, mercy could not take effect
except it should destroy the work of justice. Now the work of justice could not be
destroyed; if so, God would cease to be God.

16 Now, repentance could not come unto men except there were a punishment,
which also was eternal as the life of the soul should be, affixed opposite to the plan
of happiness, which was as eternal also as the life of the soul.

17 Now, how could a man repent except he should sin? How could he sin if there was no
law? How could there be a law save there was a punishment?

There needs to be punishment as eternal as the life of the soul or else there would be no law.
And if there was no law then there could be no repentance. And if all of this did not exist then
God would cease to exist. The Book of Mormon clearly teaches that hell and eternal punishment
is a necessary part of the plan of salvation or else God will cease to exist.

So why is this plan of salvation different than the one taught today?

The Lord does give us an answer as to why.

That answer is found in the 19th section of the Doctrine of Covenants. In this section Martin
Harris is given a personal revelation from God through the Prophet Joseph Smith. The core
message is for Martin to fulfill his financial responsibilities of mortgaging his farm to pay for the
publishing of the Book of Mormon. But, apparently, Martin was concerned about the strong
language in the Book of Mormon about an eternal hell. Martin would be considered more of a
Universalist and this language made him uncomfortable (sources required).

So in Section 19, God shares with Martin Harris a “mystery” only known previously to the
apostles.

8 Wherefore, I will explain unto you this mystery, for it is meet unto you to know even
as mine apostles.
The Lord starts this revelation by explaining that he has all power, “even to the destroying of
Satan and his works”. God also reaffirms that all people will be judged according to their works.
All need to repent or they will need to “suffer”.

1 I am Alpha and Omega, Christ the Lord; yea, even I am he, the beginning and the end,
the Redeemer of the world.

2 I, having accomplished and finished the will of him whose I am, even the Father,
concerning me—having done this that I might subdue all things unto myself—

3 Retaining all power, even to the destroying of Satan and his works at the end of
the world, and the last great day of judgment, which I shall pass upon the inhabitants
thereof, judging every man according to his works and the deeds which he hath done.

4 And surely every man must repent or suffer, for I, God, am endless.

But then he teaches Martin the “mystery” that has been withheld from all others except his
apostles.

6 Nevertheless, it is not written that there shall be no end to this torment, but it is written
endless torment.

10 For, behold, the mystery of godliness, how great is it! For, behold, I am endless, and
the punishment which is given from my hand is endless punishment, for Endless is my
name. Wherefore—

11 Eternal punishment is God’s punishment.

12 Endless punishment is God’s punishment.

Punishment will not go on forever, but will have an end. God only said it was endless and
eternal because that was his name. It was his punishment. The mystery is that punishment
will actually end at some point in time.

So why would God allow people to believe that hell and punishment would be never ending and
go on forever?

God taught Martin the reason why he would allow this to happen. He wanted to provide more
motivation for men to be righteous. If they thought the punishment would end, then they might
not have worked so hard to achieve salvation.

7 Again, it is written eternal damnation; wherefore it is more express than other

scriptures, that it might work upon the hearts of the children of men, altogether for
my name’s glory.

This reminds me of Enos’ rational for teaching so strongly about hell and punishment.
23 And there was nothing save it was exceeding aharshness, bpreaching and prophesying
of wars, and contentions, and destructions, and continually creminding them of death,
and the duration of eternity, and the judgments and the power of God, and all these
things—stirring them up dcontinually to keep them in the fear of the Lord. I
say there was nothing short of these things, and exceedingly great plainness
of speech, would keep them from going down speedily to destruction. And
after this manner do I write concerning them.

Section 19 teaches us that Heavenly Father’s plan for the Nephites was to allow them to
believe a teaching (i.e., eternal hell that does not end) that was ultimately not true in order
to “work upon their hearts”. And as Enos said, to help “keep them from going down
speedily to destruction”.

Martin is then commanded not to share these teachings with others at this time because we are
not prepared to understand that punishments would ultimately end. People must have milk
before they can receive meat and know these things about hell only being temporary.

21 And I command you that you preach naught but repentance, and show not these
things unto the world until it is wisdom in me.

22 For they cannot bear meat now, but milk they must receive; wherefore, they must not
know these things, lest they perish.

Two years later the world was ready to receive this mystery and the revelation of section 76 was
given and all of us were allowed to understand this mystery that was withheld from the nephites
for over 1,000 years of their history. Hell would in deed end and we would not be subject to the
devil forever, with the exceptions of the sons of perdition. Even the wicked, murderers, thieves
would ultimate receive some level of glory and peace and at least have the companionship of the
Holy Ghost through eternities.

Is this really just semantics?

This is not just a simple case of “you didn’t understand what I was saying”. When I said Eternal,
you should have known that I was just using my own name and not discussing a period of time.

The Book of Mormon does not exclusively use the words Endless and Eternal to describe
punishment. Through direct revelation received from angels, other words were used like:

• “a state of misery and endless torment, from whence they can no more return”
• “and the devil hath all power over you; and this is the final state of the wicked.”
• “hewn down and cast into the fire, from whence they can no more return”

There is no question. The Book of Mormon plan of salvation has the ultimate state of all people
who do not accept Christ and endure to the end as being assigned unto the devil from “whence
they can no more return”.

2 Nephi 1: 13 O that ye would awake; awake from a deep sleep, yea, even from the sleep of hell,
and shake off the awful chains by which ye are bound, which are the chains which bind the
children of men, that they are carried away captive down to the eternal gulf of misery and woe.
2 Nephi 2: 28 And now, my sons, I would that ye should look to the great Mediator, and hearken
unto his great commandments; and be faithful unto his words, and choose eternal life, according
to the will of his Holy Spirit;
29 And not choose eternal death, according to the will of the flesh and the evil which is therein,
which giveth the spirit of the devil power to captivate, to bring you down to hell, that he may
reign over you in his own kingdom.

Nephi
1 Nephi 14:18 And it came to pass that the angel spake unto me, saying: Look!

1 Nephi 15: 29 And I said unto them that it was a representation of that awful hell, which the
angel said unto me was prepared for the wicked.
1 Nephi 15: 31 And they said unto me: Doth this thing mean the torment of the body in the days
of probation, or doth it mean the final state of the soul after the death of the temporal body, or
doth it speak of the things which are temporal?
32 And it came to pass that I said unto them that it was a representation of things both temporal
and spiritual; for the day should come that they must be judged of their works, yea, even the
works which were done by the temporal body in their days of probation.
33 Wherefore, if they should die in their wickedness they must be cast off also, as to the things
which are spiritual, which are pertaining to righteousness; wherefore, they must be brought to
stand before God, to be judged of their works; and if their works have been filthiness they must
needs be filthy; and if they be filthy it must needs be that they cannot dwell in the kingdom of
God; if so, the kingdom of God must be filthy also.

1 Nephi 15: 35 And there is a place prepared, yea, even that awful hell of which I have spoken,
and the devil is the preparator of it; wherefore the final state of the souls of men is to dwell in the
kingdom of God, or to be cast out because of that justice of which I have spoken.

2 Nephi 26: 10 And when these things have passed away a speedy destruction cometh unto my
people; for, notwithstanding the pains of my soul, I have seen it; wherefore, I know that it shall
come to pass; and they sell themselves for naught; for, for the reward of their pride and their
foolishness they shall reap destruction; for because they yield unto the devil and choose works of
darkness rather than light, therefore they must go down to hell.

2 Nephi 28: 22 And behold, others he flattereth away, and telleth them there is no hell; and he
saith unto them: I am no devil, for there is none—and thus he whispereth in their ears, until he
grasps them with his awful chains, from whence there is no deliverance.
23 Yea, they are grasped with death, and hell; and death, and hell, and the devil, and all that have
been seized therewith must stand before the throne of God, and be judged according to their
works, from whence they must go into the place prepared for them, even a lake of fire and
brimstone, which is endless torment.

Jacob
2 Nephi 6: 9 Nevertheless, the Lord has shown unto me that they should return again. And he
also has shown unto me that the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, should manifest himself unto
them in the flesh; and after he should manifest himself they should scourge him and crucify him,
according to the words of the angel who spake it unto me.
2 Nephi 9: 12 And this death of which I have spoken, which is the spiritual death, shall deliver
up its dead; which spiritual death is hell; wherefore, death and hell must deliver up their dead,
and hell must deliver up its captive spirits, and the grave must deliver up its captive bodies, and
the bodies and the spirits of men will be restored one to the other; and it is by the power of the
resurrection of the Holy One of Israel.
2 Nephi 9: 15 And it shall come to pass that when all men shall have passed from this first death
unto life, insomuch as they have become immortal, they must appear before the judgment -seat
of the Holy One of Israel; and then cometh the judgment, and then must they be judged
according to the holy judgment of God.
16 And assuredly, as the Lord liveth, for the Lord God hath spoken it, and it is his eternal word,
which cannot pass away, that they who are righteous shall be righteous still, and they who are
filthy shall be filthy still; wherefore, they who are filthy are the devil and his angels; and they
shall go away into everlasting fire, prepared for them; and their torment is as a lake of fire and
brimstone, whose flame ascendeth up forever and ever and has no end.

2 Nephi 9: 23 And he commandeth all men that they must repent, and be baptized in his name,
having perfect faith in the Holy One of Israel, or they cannot be saved in the kingdom of God.
24 And if they will not repent and believe in his name, and be baptized in his name, and endure
to the end, they must be damned; for the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, has spoken it.

Jacob 3: 11 O my brethren, hearken unto my words; arouse the faculties of your souls; shake
yourselves that ye may awake from the slumber of death; and loose yourselves from the pains of
hell that ye may not become angels to the devil, to be cast into that lake of fire and brimstone
which is the second death.

Jacob 6: 9 Know ye not that if ye will do these things, that the power of the redemption and the
resurrection, which is in Christ, will bring you to stand with shame and awful guilt before the bar
of God?
10 And according to the power of justice, for justice cannot be denied, ye must go away into that
lake of fire and brimstone, whose flames are unquenchable, and whose smoke ascendeth up
forever and ever, which lake of fire and brimstone is endless torment.

Jacob 7: 5 And he had hope to shake me from the faith, notwithstanding the many revelations
and the many things which I had seen concerning these things; for I truly had seen angels, and
they had ministered unto me. And also, I had heard the voice of the Lord speaking unto me in
very word, from time to time; wherefore, I could not be shaken.
King Benjamin

Mosiah 3: 1 And again my brethren, I would call your attention, for I have somewhat more to
speak unto you; for behold, I have things to tell you concerning that which is to come.

2 And the things which I shall tell you are made known unto me by an aangel from God. And
he said unto me: bAwake; and I awoke, and behold he stood before me.

3 And he said unto me: Awake, and hear the words which I shall tell thee; for behold, I am come
to declare unto you the aglad tidings of great bjoy.

Mosiah 2: 38 Therefore if that man repenteth not, and remaineth and dieth an enemy to God, the
demands of divine justice do awaken his immortal soul to a lively sense of his own guilt, which
doth cause him to shrink from the presence of the Lord, and doth fill his breast with guilt, and
pain, and anguish, which is like an unquenchable fire, whose flame ascendeth up forever and
ever.
39 And now I say unto you, that mercy hath no claim on that man; therefore his final doom is to
endure a never-ending torment.

Mosiah 3: 19 For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and
will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the
natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a
child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the
Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father.

Mosiah 3: 24 And thus saith the Lord: They shall stand as a bright testimony against this people,
at the judgment day; whereof they shall be judged, every man according to his works, whether
they be good, or whether they be evil.
25 And if they be evil they are consigned to an awful view of their own guilt and abominations,
which doth cause them to shrink from the presence of the Lord into a state of misery and endless
torment, from whence they can no more return; therefore they have drunk damnation to their
own souls.
26 Therefore, they have drunk out of the cup of the wrath of God, which justice could no more
deny unto them than it could deny that Adam should fall because of his partaking of the
forbidden fruit; therefore, mercy could have claim on them no more forever.
27 And their torment is as a lake of fire and brimstone, whose flames are unquenchable, and
whose smoke ascendeth up forever and ever. Thus hath the Lord commanded me. Amen.
Abinidi

Mosiah 11: 20 And it came to pass that there was a man among them whose name was aAbinadi;
and he went forth among them, and began to prophesy, saying: Behold, thus saith the Lord,
and thus hath he commanded me, saying, Go forth, and say unto this people, thus saith the
Lord—Wo be unto this people, for I have seen their abominations, and their wickedness, and
their whoredoms; and except they repent I will bvisit them in mine anger

Mosiah 16: 2 And then shall the wicked be cast out, and they shall have cause to howl, and weep,
and wail, and gnash their teeth; and this because they would not hearken unto the voice of the
Lord; therefore the Lord redeemeth them not.
3 For they are carnal and devilish, and the devil has power over them; yea, even that old serpent
that did beguile our first parents, which was the cause of their fall; which was the cause of all
mankind becoming carnal, sensual, devilish, knowing evil from good, subjecting themselves to
the devil.

Mosiah 16: 10 Even this mortal shall put on immortality, and this corruption shall put on
incorruption, and shall be brought to stand before the bar of God, to be judged of him according
to their works whether they be good or whether they be evil—
11 If they be good, to the resurrection of endless life and happiness; and if they be evil, to the
resurrection of endless damnation, being delivered up to the devil, who hath subjected them,
which is damnation—

Alma the Father

Mosiah 26: 13 And now the spirit of Alma was again troubled; and he went and inquired of the
Lord what he should do concerning this matter, for he feared that he should do wrong in the sight
of God.
14 And it came to pass that after he had poured out his whole soul to God, the voice of the Lord
came to him, saying:
15 Blessed art thou, Alma, and blessed are they who were baptized in the waters of Mormon.
Thou art blessed because of thy exceeding faith in the words alone of my servant Abinadi.
Mosiah 26: 24 For behold, in my name are they called; and if they know me they shall come
forth, and shall have a place eternally at my right hand.
25 And it shall come to pass that when the second trump shall sound then shall they that never
knew me come forth and shall stand before me.
26 And then shall they know that I am the Lord their God, that I am their Redeemer; but they
would not be redeemed.
27 And then I will confess unto them that I never knew them; and they shall depart into
everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Alma the Younger

Alma 5: 45 And this is not all. Do ye not suppose that I know of these things myself? Behold, I
testify unto you that I do know that these things whereof I have spoken are true. And how do ye
suppose that I know of their surety?
46 Behold, I say unto you they are made known unto me by the Holy Spirit of God. Behold, I
have fasted and prayed many days that I might know these things of myself. And now I do know
of myself that they are true; for the Lord God hath made them manifest unto me by his Holy
Spirit; and this is the spirit of revelation which is in me.
47 And moreover, I say unto you that it has thus been revealed unto me, that the words which
have been spoken by our fathers are true, even so according to the spirit of prophecy which is in
me, which is also by the manifestation of the Spirit of God.

Alma 36: 5 Now, behold, I say unto you, if I had not been born of God I should not have known
these things; but God has, by the mouth of his holy angel, made these things known unto me, not
of any worthiness of myself;

Alma 40: 11 Now, concerning the state of the soul between death and the resurrection—
Behold, it has been made known unto me by an angel, that the spirits of all men, as soon as
they are departed from this mortal body, yea, the spirits of all men, whether they be good or evil,
are taken home to that God who gave them life.

Alma 12: 15 But this cannot be; we must come forth and stand before him in his glory, and in his
power, and in his might, majesty, and dominion, and acknowledge to our everlasting shame that
all his judgments are just; that he is just in all his works, and that he is merciful unto the children
of men, and that he has all power to save every man that believeth on his name and bringeth forth
fruit meet for repentance.
16 And now behold, I say unto you then cometh a death, even a second death, which is a spiritual
death; then is a time that whosoever dieth in his sins, as to a temporal death, shall also die a
spiritual death; yea, he shall die as to things pertaining unto righteousness.
17 Then is the time when their torments shall be as a lake of fire and brimstone, whose flame
ascendeth up forever and ever; and then is the time that they shall be chained down to an
everlasting destruction, according to the power and captivity of Satan, he having subjected them
according to his will.
18 Then, I say unto you, they shall be as though there had been no redemption made; for they
cannot be redeemed according to God’s justice; and they cannot die, seeing there is no more
corruption.

Alma 5: 10 And now I ask of you on what conditions are they saved ? Yea, what grounds had
they to hope for salvation? What is the cause of their being loosed from the bands of death, yea,
and also the chains of hell?

15 Do ye exercise faith in the redemption of him who created you? Do you look forward with an
eye of faith, and view this mortal body raised in immortality, and this corruption raised in
incorruption, to stand before God to be judged according to the deeds which have been done in
the mortal body?

24 Behold, my brethren, do ye suppose that such an one can have a place to sit down in the
kingdom of God, with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob, and also all the holy prophets,
whose garments are cleansed and are spotless, pure and white?
25 I say unto you, Nay; except ye make our Creator a liar from the beginning, or suppose that he
is a liar from the beginning, ye cannot suppose that such can have place in the kingdom of
heaven; but they shall be cast out for they are the children of the kingdom of the devil.
41 Therefore, if a man bringeth forth good works he hearkeneth unto the voice of the good
shepherd, and he doth follow him; but whosoever bringeth forth evil works, the same becometh a
child of the devil, for he hearkeneth unto his voice, and doth follow him.

Alma 40: 3 Behold, he bringeth to pass the resurrection of the dead. But behold, my son, the
resurrection is not yet. Now, I unfold unto you a mystery; nevertheless, there are many mysteries
which are kept, that no one knoweth them save God himself. But I show unto you one thing
which I have inquired diligently of God that I might know—that is concerning the resurrection.

6 Now there must needs be a space betwixt the time of death and the time of the resurrection.
7 And now I would inquire what becometh of the souls of men from this time of death to the
time appointed for the resurrection?
11 Now, concerning the state of the soul between death and the resurrection—Behold, it has
been made known unto me by an angel, that the spirits of all men, as soon as they are departed
from this mortal body, yea, the spirits of all men, whether they be good or evil, are taken home to
that God who gave them life.
12 And then shall it come to pass, that the spirits of those who are righteous are received into a
state of happiness, which is called paradise, a state of rest, a state of peace, where they shall rest
from all their troubles and from all care, and sorrow.
13 And then shall it come to pass, that the spirits of the wicked, yea, who are evil—for behold,
they have no part nor portion of the Spirit of the Lord; for behold, they chose evil works rather
than good; therefore the spirit of the devil did enter into them, and take possession of their
house—and these shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping, and wailing, and
gnashing of teeth, and this because of their own iniquity, being led captive by the will of the
devil.
14 Now this is the state of the souls of the wicked, yea, in darkness, and a state of awful, fearful
looking for the fiery indignation of the wrath of God upon them; thus they remain in this
state, as well as the righteous in paradise, until the time of their resurrection.
19 Now, whether the souls and the bodies of those of whom has been spoken shall all be reunited
at once, the wicked as well as the righteous, I do not say; let it suffice, that I say that they all
come forth; or in other words, their resurrection cometh to pass before the resurrection of those
who die after the resurrection of Christ.

21 But whether it be at his resurrection or after, I do not say; but this much I say, that there is a
space between death and the resurrection of the body, and a state of the soul in happiness or in
misery until the time which is appointed of God that the dead shall come forth, and be reunited,
both soul and body, and be brought to stand before God, and be judged according to their works.

26 But behold, an awful death cometh upon the wicked; for they die as to things pertaining to
things of righteousness; for they are unclean, and no unclean thing can inherit the kingdom of
God; but they are cast out, and consigned to partake of the fruits of their labors or their works,
which have been evil; and they drink the dregs of a bitter cup.

Alma 41: 2 I say unto thee, my son, that the plan of restoration is requisite with the justice of
God; for it is requisite that all things should be restored to their proper order. Behold, it is
requisite and just, according to the power and resurrection of Christ, that the soul of man should
be restored to its body, and that every part of the body should be restored to itself.
3 And it is requisite with the justice of God that men should be judged according to their works;
and if their works were good in this life, and the desires of their hearts were good, that they
should also, at the last day, be restored unto that which is good.
4 And if their works are evil they shall be restored unto them for evil. Therefore, all things shall
be restored to their proper order, every thing to its natural frame— mortality raised to
immortality, corruption to incorruption—raised to endless happiness to inherit the kingdom of
God, or to endless misery to inherit the kingdom of the devil, the one on one hand, the other on
the other—
8 Now, the decrees of God are unalterable; therefore, the way is prepared that whosoever will
may walk therein and be saved.

Alma to his son Coriantum – the reason why hell is forever.

Alma 41:

2 I say unto thee, my son, that the plan of restoration is requisite with the justice of God; for it is
requisite that all things should be restored to their proper order. Behold, it is requisite and just,
according to the power and resurrection of Christ, that the soul of man should be restored to its
body, and that every part of the body should be restored to itself.

3 And it is requisite with the justice of God that men should be judged according to their
works; and if their works were good in this life, and the desires of their hearts were good, that
they should also, at the last day, be restored unto that which is good.

4 And if their works are evil they shall be restored unto them for evil. Therefore, all things shall
be restored to their proper order, every thing to its natural frame -- mortality raised to
immortality, corruption to incorruption -- raised to endless happiness to inherit the kingdom of
God, or to endless misery to inherit the kingdom of the devil, the one on one hand, the other on
the other -hand.

Alma 42:

1 And now, my son, I perceive there is somewhat more which doth worry your mind, which ye
cannot understand -- which is concerning the justice of God in the punishment of the sinner; for
ye do try to suppose that it is injustice that the sinner should be consigned to a state of
misery.

4 And thus we see, that there was a time granted unto man to repent, yea, a probationary time, a
time to repent and serve God.

8 Now behold, it was not expedient that man should be reclaimed from this temporal death, for
that would destroy the great plan of happiness.

10 Therefore, as they had become carnal, sensual, and devilish, by nature, this probationary state
became a state for them to prepare; it became a preparatory state.

13 Therefore, according to justice, the plan of redemption could not be brought about, only on
conditions of repentance of men in this probationary state, yea, this preparatory state; for except
it were for these conditions, mercy could not take effect except it should destroy the work of
justice. Now the work of justice could not be destroyed; if so, God would cease to be God.

16 Now, repentance could not come unto men except there were a punishment, which also
was eternal as the life of the soul should be, affixed opposite to the plan of happiness, which
was as eternal also as the life of the soul.

17 Now, how could a man repent except he should sin? How could he sin if there was no law?
How could there be a law save there was a punishment?

18 Now, there was a punishment affixed, and a just law given, which brought remorse of
conscience unto man.

19 Now, if there was no law given -- if a man murdered he should die -- would he be afraid he
would die if he should murder?

20 And also, if there was no law given against sin men would not be afraid to sin.

21 And if there was no law given, if men sinned what could justice do, or mercy either, for they
would have no claim upon the creature?

22 But there is a law given, and a punishment affixed, and a repentance granted; which
repentance, mercy claimeth; otherwise, justice claimeth the creature and executeth the law, and
the law inflicteth the punishment; if not so, the works of justice would be destroyed, and God
would cease to be God.

26 And thus God bringeth about his great and eternal purposes, which were prepared from the
foundation of the world. And thus cometh about the salvation and the redemption of men,
and also their destruction and misery.

Ammon

Alma 26: 13 Behold, how many thousands of our brethren has he loosed from the pains of ahell;
and they are brought to bsing redeeming love, and this because of the power of his word which is
in us, therefore have we not great reason to rejoice?

14 Yea, we have reason to praise him forever, for he is the Most High God, and has loosed our
brethren from the achains of hell.

15 Yea, they were encircled about with everlasting adarkness and destruction; but behold, he has
brought them into his everlasting blight, yea, into everlasting salvation; and they are encircled
about with the matchless bounty of his love; yea, and we have been instruments in his hands of
doing this great and marvelous work.

Amulek to the Zoramites

Alma 34: 16 And thus amercy can satisfy the demands of bjustice, and encircles them in the arms
of safety, while he that exercises no faith unto repentance is exposed to the whole law of the
demands of cjustice; therefore only unto him that has faith unto repentance is brought about the
great and eternal dplan of eredemption.

33 And now, as I said unto you before, as ye have had so many awitnesses, therefore, I beseech
of you that ye do not bprocrastinate the day of your crepentance until the end; for after this day of
life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this
life, then cometh the dnight of edarkness wherein there can be no labor performed.

34 Ye cannot say, when ye are brought to that awful acrisis, that I will repent, that I will return to
my God. Nay, ye cannot say this; for that same spirit which doth bpossess your bodies at the time
that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal
world.

35 For behold, if ye have procrastinated the day of your repentance even until death, behold, ye
have become asubjected to the spirit of the devil, and he doth bseal you his; therefore, the Spirit
of the Lord hath withdrawn from you, and hath no place in you, and the devil hath all power
over you; and this is the final state of the wicked.

37 And now, my beloved brethren, I desire that ye should remember these things, and that ye
should awork out your salvation with fear before God, and that ye should no more deny the
coming of Christ;

38 That ye acontend no more against the Holy Ghost, but that ye receive it, and take upon you the
b
name of Christ; that ye humble yourselves even to the dust, and cworship God, in whatsoever
place ye may be in, in spirit and in truth; and that ye live in dthanksgiving daily, for the many
e
mercies and blessings which he doth bestow upon you.

39 Yea, and I also aexhort you, my brethren, that ye be bwatchful unto prayer continually, that ye
may not be led away by the ctemptations of the devil, that he may not overpower you, that ye
may not become his subjects at the last day; for behold, he rewardeth you dno good thing.
Nephi Son of Helaman

Helaman 7:  16 Yea, how could you have given way to the enticing of him who is seeking to hurl
away your souls down to everlasting misery and endless wo?

Helaman 12:  23 Therefore, blessed are they who will repent and hearken unto the voice of the
Lord their God; for these are they that shall be saved.

24 And may God grant, in his great fulness, that men might be brought unto repentance and
good works, that they might be restored unto grace for grace, according to their works.

25 And I would that all men might be saved. But we read that in the great and last day there are
some who shall be cast out, yea, who shall be cast off from the presence of the Lord;

26 Yea, who shall be consigned to a state of endless misery, fulfilling the words which say:
They that have done good shall have everlasting life; and they that have done evil shall have
everlasting damnation. And thus it is. Amen.

Samuel the Lamanite

Helaman 14:  15 For behold, he surely must die that salvation may come; yea, it behooveth him
and becometh expedient that he dieth, to bring to pass the resurrection of the dead, that thereby
men may be brought into the presence of the Lord.

16 Yea, behold, this death bringeth to pass the resurrection, and redeemeth all mankind from the
first death—that spiritual death; for all mankind, by the fall of Adam being cut off from the
presence of the Lord, are considered as dead, both as to things temporal and to things spiritual.

17 But behold, the resurrection of Christ redeemeth mankind, yea, even all mankind, and
bringeth them back into the presence of the Lord.

18 Yea, and it bringeth to pass the condition of repentance, that whosoever repenteth the same is
not hewn down and cast into the fire; but whosoever repenteth not is hewn down and cast into
the fire; and there cometh upon them again a spiritual death, yea, a second death, for they are cut
off again as to things pertaining to righteousness.

19 Therefore repent ye, repent ye, lest by knowing these things and not doing them ye shall
suffer yourselves to come under condemnation, and ye are brought down unto this second death.

Jesus
3 Nephi 26: 3 And he did expound all things, even from the beginning until the time that he
should come in his glory—yea, even all things which should come upon the face of the earth,
even until the elements should melt with fervent heat, and the earth should bedwrapt together as
a scroll, and the heavens and the earth should pass away;

4 And even unto the great and last day, when all people, and all kindreds, and all nations and
tongues shall stand before God, to be judged of their works, whether they be good or whether
they be evil—

5 If they be good, to the resurrection of everlasting life; and if they be evil, to the resurrection of
damnation; being on a parallel, the one on the one hand and the other on the other hand,
according to the mercy, and the justice, and the holiness which is in Christ, who was before the
world began.

3 Nephi 27:  13 Behold I have given unto you my gospel, and this is the gospel which I have
given unto you—that I came into the world to do the will of my Father, because my Father sent
me.

14 And my Father sent me that I might be lifted up upon the cross; and after that I had been
lifted up upon the cross, that I might draw all men unto me, that as I have been lifted up by men
even so should men be lifted up by the Father, to stand before me, to be judged of their works,
whether they be good or whether they be evil—

15 And for this cause have I been lifted up; therefore, according to the power of the Father I will
draw all men unto me, that they may be judged according to their works.

16 And it shall come to pass, that whoso repenteth and is baptized in my name shall be filled;
and if he endureth to the end, behold, him will I hold guiltless before my Father at that day when
I shall stand to judge the world.

17 And he that endureth not unto the end, the same is he that is also hewn down and cast into the
fire, from whence they can no more return, because of the justice of the Father.

Mormon

Mormon 9: 4 Behold, I say unto you that ye would be more miserable to dwell with a holy and
just God, under a consciousness of your filthiness before him, than ye would to dwell with the
damned souls in hell.

13 And because of the redemption of man, which came by Jesus Christ, they are brought back
into the presence of the Lord; yea, this is wherein all men are redeemed, because the death of
Christ bringeth to pass the resurrection, which bringeth to pass a redemption from an endless
sleep, from which sleep all men shall be awakened by the power of God when the trump shall
sound; and they shall come forth, both small and great, and all shall stand before his bar, being
redeemed and loosed from this eternal band of death, which death is a temporal death.

14 And then cometh the judgment of the Holy One upon them; and then cometh the time that he
that is filthy shall be filthy still; and he that is righteous shall be righteous still; he that is happy
shall be happy still; and he that is unhappy shall be unhappy still.

Moroni: 9 And after this manner did the Holy Ghost manifest the word of God unto me;
wherefore, my beloved son, I know that it is solemn mockery before God, that ye should baptize
little children.

10 Behold I say unto you that this thing shall ye teach—repentance and baptism unto those who
are accountable and capable of committing sin; yea, teach parents that they must repent and be
baptized, and humble themselves as their little children, and they shall all be saved with their
little children.

11 And their little children need no repentance, neither baptism. Behold, baptism is unto
repentance to the fulfilling the commandments unto the remission of sins.

12 But little children are alive in Christ, even from the foundation of the world; if not so, God is
a partial God, and also a changeable God, and a respecter to persons; for how many little
children have died without baptism!

13 Wherefore, if little children could not be saved without baptism, these must have gone to an
endless hell.

14 Behold I say unto you, that he that supposeth that little children need baptism is in the gall of
bitterness and in the bonds of iniquity; for he hath neither faith, hope, nor charity; wherefore,
should he be cut off while in the thought, he must go down to hell.

15 For awful is the wickedness to suppose that God saveth one child because of baptism, and the
other must perish because he hath no baptism.

16 Wo be unto them that shall pervert the ways of the Lord after this manner, for they shall
perish except they repent. Behold, I speak with boldness, having authority from God; and I fear
not what man can do; for perfect love casteth out all fear.

17 And I am filled with charity, which is everlasting love; wherefore, all children are alike unto
me; wherefore, I love little children with a perfect love; and they are all alike and partakers of
salvation.
18 For I know that God is not a partial God, neither a changeable being; but he is unchangeable
from ball eternity to all eternity.

19 Little children cannot repent; wherefore, it is awful wickedness to deny the pure mercies of
God unto them, for they are all alive in him because of his mercy.

20 And he that saith that little children need baptism denieth the mercies of Christ, and setteth at
naught the atonement of him and the power of his redemption.

21 Wo unto such, for they are in danger of death, hell, and an endless torment. I speak it boldly;
God hath commanded me. Listen unto them and give heed, or they stand against you at the
judgment-seat of Christ.
