CHD 119: Introduction to Reading Methods

Reading Project Lesson Plan Format

Follow the exact format listed below. No other format will be accepted!
Age Level or Grade Level of the students:
I will be reading to children ages four to five years old.
Title of the Book:
The title of the book is Arthurs Valentine. The author and illustrator of the book is
Marc Brown.
Title of the Poem:
There was no author and illustrator. However here is the site of where I found the
poem. http://www.canteach.ca/elementary/songspoems13.html
For Valentine's Day
Out of a snow cloud, cold and gray,
Something dropped on St. Valentine's Day,
Whirling and twirling and soft and light,
Like wee little letters all dainty and white,
And I guess the sky children were sending down,
This Valentine straight to the children in town.
VA Foundation of Learning Standards:
Standard for the Poetry (Phonics/Word Study) Activity: a) Identify words that rhyme
and generate simple Rhymes standard.
Standard for Picture Walk (Vocabulary/Comprehension) Activity: 1.c, Make predictions
about what might happen in a story.
Standard for Writing Journal activity: b) Demonstrate use of print to convey meaning

Phonics Element or Word Study Activity:

What I would do as the teacher is have index cards with some of the rhyming
words of the poem. The words on the heart shaped card will be words such as gray, light,

and down. The words on the big read construction paper, would be words such as day,
white, and town. I would first read the poem to the children, than I would explain the
activity. I would have each child match the rhyming words on the cards, with the word on
the construction paper on the board. I will ask the children do you see any rhyming
words. The students will identify words that rhyme. They will have to match words like
gray with day. The children can also make up other rhyming words with the words on the
construction paper.
Picture Walk Vocabulary Words:
The three vocabulary word that I have chosen are, secret admirer, mystery, and
carriage.
Predicting Questions:
(I would show the front cover) Take a look at the cover what do you think is going to
happen in this book?
Have you boys and girls ever heard of Valentines Day?
How many of you celebrate Valentines Day?
Comprehension Questions:
Questions I would ask during the reading the bookWhat is a secret admire?
What do you think is a mystery?
What is a carriage?
Do any you have a little sister or brother that uses a carriage?
Questions to ask after reading the bookHave you boys and girl ever had a secret admire?
Writing Journal Activity:
After reading the book I will tell the children Now that we have read about Arthur and
how he got a valentine card from his secret admire, how would you boys and girls like to
create your own valentine cards for your secret admire? This activity relates to
comprehension by having the children understand the meaning of the word secret
admire and how it is used.

Adaptations:
How I will adapt the activity for English Language Learners is if I were to read Arthurs
Valentine in class I would get a copy that has the childs language below the English
sentences. Also, I would have the poem in the childs language. I would take the three

vocabulary words from the picture walk and have those words on a picture card translated
in their own language.
Assessment and Follow-Up:
Poem: How I will know if the students met my goals as well as the standards; is the
children will be given cards with word that rhyme with the vocabulary terms on the chart.
Therefore, if I give a child a term such as down. Then they would put the word under the
vocab day. I would know if they understood the concept of rhyming words.
Picture Walk:
Since the standard is making predictions about what might happen in a story. How I
will assess the children is if I ask the children questions like what do you think is going
to happen next. If they are able to comment what they think is going to happen as well
as talk about the 3 vocabulary word. Then I would to know that the child understands
how to make predictions.
Writing Journal Activity: The standard I chose is Demonstrate use of print to convey
meaning. I will assess the childrens by observing if they are able to use print and
convey a meaning by creating and writing a card for their secret admirer.
