The _________ school district appeals to me because.. My lifelong love of science is the foundation of my interest in teaching. Science was my favorite subject in school and since then I have read, studied and thought about science at every opportunity. The practice of scienceand the discoveries engendered by itoccupy my mind, keep me entertained and satisfy my passion for understanding how the world works. In the classroom, I share this curiosity with my students and seek to spark students own curiosity through an inquiry-based approach to science learning. As a student teacher at Adele Harrison Middle School in Sonoma, CA, Ive been in the vanguard of teachers implementing the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). I design and implement my lessons based on the new standards and their emphasis on what students should be able to do rather than what they are expected to know. For example, I designed an ecology unit, in which students made real world observations of a riparian ecosystem near the school and used these observations, in conjunction with independent research, to construct a model of the flow of matter and energy in that ecosystem. Reviewing students completed models revealed great progress made by my students in understanding the scientific principles being taught and affirmed the success of the unit. Along with my passion for science, I am equally interested in students and in helping support them personally as well as in their discovery of the world. I have experience working with students across a spectrum of abilities, including English Language Learners and students with special education needs, and treat all my students as equals and believe that they are all capable of success. Setting high expectations for behavior and learning gives students a specific, yet challenging, target to reach for while establishing the positive relationships that they need during these important middle school years. I am flexible and responsive to the needs of each student while remaining fully committed to the standards being employed. In service of this goal, along with the social and linguistic development of my students, I encourage collaborative discussions in my classroom, while employing a no opt out strategy that guarantees that all students are involved. This past year of student teaching has been infinitely rewarding, both personally and professionally. The students at Adele Harrison have taught me a great deal, and underscored my deep commitment to teaching science.
