Weekly Reflection #4
Every classroom is going to have diversity among its children. This could be
race, gender, or family. It is important to know how to act towards the students and
the parents in this situation. Some children come from poverty or are homeless and
others come from families that are going through divorce or abuse. To follow the
NAEYC Standard #7 as a teacher I would need to keep in mind that families are
important because young children's learning is connected to them. Also a
relationship (NAEYC #1) with both the student and the parents would give me the
insight needed to best teach them. These standards match the InTASC standard 1
for learner development and 2 for learning differences. They match because young
learners development comes partly from their parents. If a teacher understands the
differences between the students that is forming a relationship with them.
When I was in school I never had problems. In class we watched a video
about to joggers of a different race. The male was acting strange to the female
because she was of darker skin and though she was raised in America he had
assumed that she was not. The video was funny and awkward at the same time but
showed us that people see others as different without thinking about it first. This is
the same as seeing how people are influenced by their upbringing and shows those
differences that teachers should be aware of.
