Interview Analysis Memo
DATE: February 19, 2016
TO: Professor Dave Gagon
FROM: Kathy Rodriguez
SUBJECT: Interview Analysis Memo, COMM 1010-016
I had the opportunity to meet with a registered nurse at my job that works at Primary Childrens
Hospital. I approached one of the nurses I know that works day and night shifts.
I plan on going into the nursing program and finish the pre-requirements and so it was best to
interview a registered nurse. When I interviewed the person I thought it would be easier than I
expected or didnt expect so much detail into what is required but I found it interesting how the
classes are so much more fun.
Summary of Lesson Learned
Education
I learned there are many important classes you need to take seriously and really try your best in
them. You really need to be focused and make school your first priority. Its crazy how many
students dont take classes that are related to their major. I found it interesting how volunteer
hours are very useful and helpful for skills and to show something you did good on your free
time while having all this stress in nursing. Its good to have a good amount of hours in
volunteering for them to consider you even more when doing your nursing application.
Melanie told me she had a tough time paying for education since there were so many things
going on in her life and that made it tough for her. She had to get loans and she still is paying
them off and wants to keep going to school for nurse practitioner once she is doing paying off
her loans since she can afford it now.
Having your CNA isnt a requirement for most programs depending where you are applying. But
it is best you have your CNA to gain experience for when you go into nursing and you get to
learn more about what environment you will be working with. Melanie recommended CNA first
before nursing, there are tons of places I can take it at and for a cheap price. Many places have
them for a short time and you can be certified within 2-4 weeks, which I think is great to get
ahead in gaining more experience.
Work
Melanie explained to me how her first day of being a nurse was, it was scary because she was
scared to freeze in the most terrifying moments or for something so simple. Her first day went
great and started off in primarys in the PICU and then transferred to infant unit because she
loves working with little babies. She said she loves her job and would hate for the time for her to

quit and move on to better things when she becomes an NP. There are many things she does
repeatedly at work and doesnt mind it because she knows the routine and knows how to get
things done. When doing something different you have to get out of your comfort zone and start
doing things that are more unknown.
The job as a registered nurse is to keep up to paste, some days or nights will be more crazy than
others and thats something that you cant control. It will keep you busy and the same time you
can hate it or love it. But to me she explained how she loves how busy it can be and that she is
never tired or bored at her job, she loves the babies.
Melanie explained sometimes there will be times your work schedule will change for the unit
needing more nurses. I usually work the day shifts and sometimes will go into night shifts due to
something going on in my personal life or me wanting to do over time. Its a great work schedule
and night shifts are a little tough because you have to stay away and make sure you dont fall
asleep but at the same time they can be really quiet nights. With working the day shift a lot of
things are going on, families come and visit, babies need surgeries, discharges, MRIs, things like
that can get pretty crazy. She said usually she gets assigned a tech and helps her when she cant
do everything at once.
Also Melanie explained how she gets to work with a great environment, where she gets along
with many people and works with great doctors. She was letting me know how doctors
sometimes dont have the best hand writing and always has a good way on how to approach them
when she needs to be corrected on something. Its a good thing to get along with doctors because
there are some that dont or wont know how to approach you.
Family
Melanie loves her family and nursing doesnt interfere it actually makes it better because she
knows what to do when one her of kids get sick. Its really helpful and useful, she said she gets to
be a part of her kids life as she wants. Unless she has to take on more shifts that she should but
likes having the balance.
She said she had kids her 2nd year of nursing and doesnt regret it but wishes she would have
after because it took a lot of sacrifices but now everything is balanced.
Interview Analysis:
This interview had me see many points of nursing and what to expect. Especially with what
classes to take and what to do when applying for nursing program.
Analysis of Registered Nurse as my Career Choice
From this interview, I know I want to still go into nursing and I got really excited when she told
me how all the hard work paid off. I can see myself being a great nurse and furthering my
education. I cant wait to see how far I get into nursing and graduate and start my career. Its
really exciting once I start applying for the nursing programs.
Analysis of my interviewing process

In the beginning of the interview I felt pretty shy and didnt really know how to approach
Melanie. I barely see her at work and I felt strange because she probably was thinking what made
her choose me.
During the interview I tried my best to not look at my paper when I got nervous and tried to give
her eye contact. I tried to not sound nervous or go too fast. I wrote down many notes on a
separate piece of paper. It was helpful and just kept going and tried keeping up when writing
down the notes. I did ask some questions that I did not write down since it was an interesting and
got more curious.
If I would do another interview it would be in a better setting and not at work during her lunch
just because I pressured her into the 30 minutes and I thought that was pretty bad since I kept
asking questions. I would next time choose somewhere out of work and take my time with the
interview and not rush since I used her lunch time.

Mrs. Woodland,
Thank you for letting me interview you and helping me find out more information on my career.
You let me be more interested into my career due to your help, thank you again.
I now know that there is much more needed than what the requirements show and how to be an
excellent nurse. I appreciate all the advice and your time given for helping on where to start and
how to do it. It was a great start to figure out what is needed and what can benefit me in the
future. Thank you so much for all the great advice.
I appreciate the time you gave me to interview you, you were such a great help. I learned a lot
from you for nursing and what is expected in the future.

Sincerely,
Kathy Rodriguez

INTERVIEW EVALUATION QUESTIONNAIRE

Students Name:_Kathy Rodriguez_ Location of Interview: Intermountain_Date of Interview 2/17

1. What are your frank reactions to the manner in which the student initiated the interview? (Did s/he give a clear
explanation of the type of information s/he was seeking and why s/he was seeking it?)
She did a great job at explaining herself and asked great questions to what she was most concerned about

2. What is your reaction to the student's self-presentation? What specific behaviors were effective or not effective
(e.g. confidence, eye contact, vocabulary, tone of voice, dress, level of interest, etc.)?
Seemed confident but the tone of voice was a low at times and could have improved. Not much eye contact since she

she had written down
3. What is your reaction to the student's organization of the interview as a whole? Did the questions elicit information
that you feel is important? Did s/he skip from topic to topic too quickly? Did s/he allow you enough time to answer?

She went quickly and then slowed down since she added new questions to the interview and wanted to know more.
Questions were important and some personal one
4. What specific suggestions can you give this student to help improve her/his performance in interviewing?
Ask more questions and dont be scared of the feedback you get
