Mentoring College Teacher: Mr. Mark Eckersley Date and Time: Wednesday 2 March 10.55-11.45 am
Competency A Professionalism and Understanding:
The class started well and the students responded well to the initial instructional verb game. You started on time and the lesson was well planned. The content and activities were geared well to the students. The students understood the lesson learning aims and process well. Category B Planning for Learning: A very well planned lesson. The students abilities were catered for well. The use of the computer to scaffold and initiate the learning worked well. The different aspects of the lesson were well planned and drew on previous knowledge. You addressed the knowledge and skills of the students in the plan. It is good that you had differentiation of the core task of students using the instructional verbs on a group poster.
Category C Implementing and Managing Learning:
The lesson objectives were implemented well and student learning was managed in a number of ways. The initial instructional verb game was implemented well. The next activity where children were questioned was managed well and many students were able to contribute. You stated that students should use English and you reinforced this on a number of occasions. You allowed a five minute section with some Arabic speaking to help reinforce the concepts and terminology learnt. The use of stick figures and the students drawing while you explained the different aspects of the body and clothing worked well to both model the language and help a visual and kinesthetic learning experience. You have various techniques to control the behavior of the group and individuals. The use of a video made with a student worked well. This reinforced the target language of instructional verbs in an interesting way. Watch the pronunciation of words like spread. The differentiation of the poster task worked well.
MCT OBSERVATION REPORT B.Ed. (EPR)
Teaching Practice Internship 2016 Category D Monitoring and Assessment of Learning: You monitored the student learning through the use of direct teaching and modelling. You did look at some student work but you needed to try to look at the student work more regularly and consistently. Checking the students helps you to assess the way they understand and achieve the tasks. You needed to circulate around the class a little more regularly. Try to assess and reward students also with how effectively they work in groups. You were able to focus the class when they were a little over-enthusiastic and noisy. Well done.
Category E Reflection:
Strengths of the Lesson:
The main strengths of this lesson were: Your lesson planning, quality of teaching, explicitness of instructions, good rapport with the learners, and a wide variety of activities and differentiation of tasks was used. Areas for Development: The timing of some activities like the core activity were a little mis-timed. Try to plan the timing a little better. Focus for next lesson: Try to get around to more groups and see if you can assess the students during the class as this is a core part of teaching.
