Research Question
How Assassinations
Of Famous Leaders
Around The World
Impacted The United States
Introduction
Not often do people really think about where America might be if the things that happened in the past didn't happen, at least,
in great detail. An infinite amount of things could have gone differently, and things would most likely not be the same as they are
today. People who were not inspired by Martin Luther King Jr. when he was alive but really started to understand civil rights and
segregation when he died may not be inspired or persuaded today because he could have never ended up getting assassinated. So
many unheard of laws today, could have been put into motion in the past making the way the United States lived originally completely
different with a whole new set of rules to abide by.
Introduction
Prior to reading the informational book Kennedys Assassination by Wilborn Hampton there was a relatively small amount
knowledge in the group about the topic. It was common knowledge JFK was riding in his motorcade, and he unexpectedly was shot,
the crowd watching him campaign most likely went into a mix of shock and chaos. A large amount was learned over the course of
reading out of the book and researching then what was known originally.
Introduction
The questions asked, and answered, were chosen mainly because not many people know much about people who are
commonly looked up to have been assassinated and how their death affected America, when the event took place, and how it affects
today. In the process of finding this research question there were many options but in the end learning more about assassinations of
leaders was most important.
Search Methods
We searched online, read a book, and used prior knowledge to answer our questions
The book was the most interesting source to use since it was the first thing we got information about how assassinations really
affected people
One problem we ran into was not finding enough information to answer our questions, but we resolved this by finding more
Our questions started off in small questions, such as Why were these people assassinated?
Our questions developed into more specific questions that narrowed more on one topic, such as How did the assassinations of
these people affect our lives?
This change was good because we got more information about more specific topics.
Our book
Written by Wilborn Hampton
he is a reporter from Dallas, Texas.
He has a wife and a son and a grandson.
Won two Academy Awards
He wrote six books total so far
He mostly wrote about what he covered as a reporter such as Elvis and Babe Ruth
All we knew about this topic was the main well-known assassinations, such as John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.
We never thought about how it affected our and other peoples lives
We started to figure out which sites were credible and which ones werent
We started to gain better information on how to be a good researcher and how to find credible websites.
One reason we were interested in this topic was because we wanted to know who was assassinated and who the assassin was.
We were also interested in finding out how the victim was assassinated.
We also were interested because we wanted to see why the assassins killed their victim.
Also, we wanted to see how the assassination impacted the United States of America
SUB QUESTIONS
Did Martin Luther King Jrs death impact America more than when he was alive?
How did the citizens of the United States react to the assassination of John F. Kennedy?
Why do the citizens hate Robert F. Kennedy? Did he affect the citizens of the United States when he died even, though he was
hated?
What happened to the assassin, John Wilkes Booth, after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln?
How did John Lennon's assassination change people's belief in music and how did it affect them emotionally?
Alternative Source
Our alternative source about the topic of JFK was Mr. Stougard.
When we started the research project we started with the knowledge from our book and prior knowledge that not many people
like(d) the Kennedy family.
What Mr. Stougard said contradicts this, he informed us that many people actually did like the Kennedy family.
This information helped us not spread the wrong knowledge about the topic in our slides.
His Life
MLK Jr. grew up in a crowded house, living with six people. He lived with his parents, his grandparents, and two siblings.
MLK Jr. dad fought against prejudice which impacted MLK Jr.s future decisions.
He started getting into civil rights when he was chose to lead a protest and be the official spokesman.
After MLK Jr. proceeded to write and organize protests and speeches.
One specific protest lead in Birmingham, Alabama was countered violently by white policemen using hoses, attack dogs and
other violent methods.
His Death
James Earl Ray was a criminal before killing MLK Jr. and was a racist.
James Earl Ray began his plan to kill MLK Jr. in 1968.
James Earl Ray confessed to killing MLK Jr. a year later in March.
At first, James Earl Ray said he had nothing to do with killing MKL Jr.
John F. Kennedy
How did the citizens of the United States react to the assassination of John F. Kennedy?
John F. Kennedy
John F. Kennedy was the 35th president of the united states and wouldve most likely had a second term, if he
hadnt been shot. Kennedy was campaigning for his second term in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963 and he
was driving in an open-top convertible. Sitting beside his wife, Jacqueline Kennedy, he was shot by Lee Harvey Oswald, who was
supposedly sitting at his apartment.
It is not proven that Oswald was Kennedys murderer, but all evidence points to it. For example, when the police was going after
him, he shot one of them and killed them. This shows that Oswald knew he did something wrong, but even if he didnt, he
should've gone to jail anyways, since he just killed a police officer.
John F. Kennedys family and the rest of the United States was affected. To answer the question, How did assassinations of
Leaders around the world affect the people of the United States, Kennedys death had one main impact on the people of the United
States, sadness. People were crying and mourning Kennedys death. There is no reason for anybody to be happy about his death,
John F. Kennedy had three brothers, Robert F. Kennedy, Ted Kennedy, and Joseph P. Kennedy Jr.
John was not the only one of his brothers to run for president, Robert and Ted also ran for president. Robert ran for president in
1968, but, like his brother, was assassinated. In 1980, Ted ran for president, but didnt make it far. This was because he had
made poor decisions since his brothers deaths. One example is a car crash he was in and he didnt die, but another person did,
which left a bad mark on Ted. That is why most people didnt vote for him.
A lot of people think that if he didnt make poor decisions, he wouldve became president and had two terms. Also, people think
he wouldnt have made poor decisions if his brothers werent assassinated. Many people thought John was going to have two
terms and many people thought the same for Robert. If they havent been assassinated, Ted wouldnt have made poor decisions
and he wouldve most likely had two terms too. That would be 24 straight years of the Kennedy family running the United
He had three brothers: Joseph P. Kennedy, Robert F, Kennedy, and Edward M. Kennedy.
Robert was Johns attorney general before John was assassinated. Robert was assassinated in 1968 at age 42 while running
for president.
Edward, people called him Ted, died of cancer in 2009 at age 77.
Johns father was the oldest son of Patrick J. Kennedy, who was a politician and Johns mother was the daughter of John F.
Fitzgerald, who was the mayor of Boston.
Abraham Lincoln
What happened to the assassin, John Wilkes Booth, after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln?
Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president on the United States and he fought in the Civil War to stop slavery in the south.
Abraham Lincoln was born in 1816 in Kentucky. His family later moved to Indiana.
Abraham Lincoln was originally a lawyer and is arguably one of the greatest presidents in the United States
In his final speech he told the United States to welcome back the south and not to hold grudges against them.
After he shot the president he managed to flee the theater and leave Washington D.C.
Soon the entire country was looking for the assassin. He was soon captured and was sentenced to death for his crimes.
Robert F. Kennedy
Why do the citizens hate Robert F. Kennedy?
Did he affect the citizens of the United States when he died even, though he was hated?
Robert F. Kennedy
A little bit about Robert F Kennedy:
Robert F. Kennedy was an attorney general for the Us from 1961 to 1964. he Graduated from
Harvard University and the University of Virginia School of Law. On On June 5, 1968 he was
Shot while campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination. People say that Robert F. Kennedy would have won if not for
being shot.
Robert had 11 children and he was buried at Virginias Arlington National Cemetery.
His life
Robert Kennedy was born on November 20, 1925.
From research I have concluded that he may of thought it was the only way to prevent him from becoming president. (I will explain
my thinking)
Robert Kennedys ideas had naturally caused some people to oppose his ideas but one person Sirhan Sirhan had thought his idea
was so bad that he could not be president so he killed Robert Kennedy.
Mahatma Gandhi
What did the Government do resulting in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi?
Mahatma Gandhi
Mahatma Gandhi was a leader of India's independence and the designer of a type of non-violent civil violation that
affected the world majorly.
Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 and was assassinated on January 30, 1948.
During his youth, Mohandas Gandhi was shy, soft-spoken, and only a mediocre student at school.
At age 23, Gandhi spent 20 years in South Africa working to fight discrimination.
While in India, Gandhi's obvious virtue, simplistic lifestyle, and minimal dress endeared him to the people.
Many civil rights leaders, including Martin Luther King Jr., used Gandhi's concept of non-violent protest as a model
for their own struggles.
At age 13, Gandhi married Kasturba, also known as Kasturbai, later on they had 4 children.
On September 1888, at age 18, Gandhi left India without his Wife and newborn child, to learn and become a barrister (lawyer).
Even after Gandhis death, his commitment to nonviolence and his belief in simple living, such as making his own clothes, eating a
vegetarian diet and fasts for self-purification, have been a beacon of hope for oppressed and marginalized people around the
world.
Satyagraha still remains as one of the most potent philosophies in freedom struggles around the world.
Also, Gandhis actions inspired many people around the globe and many include civil rights leaders, Martin Luther King Jr. and
Nelson Mandela.

John Lennon
How did John Lennon's assassination change people's belief in music and how did it affect them emotionally?
Was the lead singer of the Beatles, known as the Fab Four.
They started in 1960 and after that they took off in the world of music.
September 1969, John Lennon silently announced that he would be leaving the group.
The Beatles were one of the first to make good rock and roll and pop music that all of America heard and loved
The Beatles were one of the first boy bands to make a music video.
John Lennon
John Lennon
John Lennon had 2 kids and his wife was Yoko Ono.
Mark Chapman lived inside the book Catcher In the Rye by J. D. Salinger.
After reading the book, he was confused, he felt the need to Beatles either commit suicide or kill John Lennon.
After the assassination Mark Chapman regretted his decision of assassinating John Lennon
Graph
This is a graph that shows the number
of albums the Beatles sold in 25
years.
This means that the Beatles sold a lot
of albums. Over 10,000,000
albums
John Lennon
How did John Lennon change people's belief in music and how it affected the
When John Lennon died, it took a matter of hours until the whole world knew
emotionally?
Americans listened to country, and rhythmic blues before the Beatles
The Beatles started to make pop and rock and roll music and that changed the way people listened and thought about music.
One of the genre most listened in America is pop and rock and roll music.
Without the Beatles, pop and rock and roll music would probably not be as popular.
When The Beatles music was listened to, it made the lives of listeners better and happier.
Our Question
How does a well-looked-up-to leader affect the United States if
they are assassinated?
The part of the nation who saw the president as a good leader and a smart leader will be possibly mourning
Some people may be defensive over what other people say about that president if they are bad things
This means, to the people who thought of JFK as a good president even the people who didn't will have to get used to a new
president, which they may like more or may hate more.
Leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. are respected because of their effect on the civil rights movement and giving Blacks rights
that the whites had.
If there was no Martin Luther King Jr. to inspire people there might have been that kind of segregation today.
Conclusion
In conclusion, finding more credible and more informational is one way that shows improvement in finding information and
how to check if a website is credible or not. Organizing an outline for the research paper and taking more time on the project are some
improvements expected to make on the next project. Learning how each and every leader improved America and learning how the
leaders changed history, brought many thoughts on if they did not do the things they did, how would America act and how would it be
like. Feeling happy about what you have and feeling happy that you are alive are two things anyone should be happy about after
learning about the many leaders that were assassinated.
