Topic Proposal:

Introduction/Overview
In the past 20 years we have seen more advancement in technology and medicine than we ever
have before. Technology and medicine go hand and hand. New technology increases research for doctors
and creates faster and easier systems among hospitals and offices. Medicine is developing constantly. In
the last decade, robotic surgery and other automated devices are developing worldwide. (Robotics in
medicine). Robotic assistants now plan an important role in modern medicine. Robotic operations are
becoming more prevalent in foregut, bariatric, colorectal, and other general surgical fields. However, longterm effects have not been fully evaluated. The curriculum for these operations have not been fully
developed. In a study, they found that general surgery residents currently show limited improvement in
overall robotic skills during the course of their training (Surgical Endoscopy). What is the effect that
robotic devices have on the Health care system and the way our doctors operate? Since robots are
becoming more and more popular in the medical field it has caused a shift in medicine as well as
curriculum for medicine. These are both positive and negative effects.
Initial Inquiry Questions:
1. What kind of surgerys can robots perform?
2. Do they perform major procedures?
3. Are these considered better than actual doctors for patients?
4. How are they training doctors and others in this field?
5. How is the robotic machines changing medical field/ employment?
6. Is this changing roles for doctors?
7. How do patients feel about robots performing on them?
8. Do doctors agree or disagree with these advancements?

My interest in this topic:

Since I was young as well as started to watch every episode of Greys Anatomy, I have grown an
interest in the medical field and what really goes on in it. If I had the patience and drive to actually stay
in school long enough to become a doctor I would, but I dont want to graduate when I am almost 30
years of age. However, I still find all medical things interesting. I also have had many long experiences
inside hospitals with both my grandmother who had Alzheimers and my grandfather who had Cancer.
From when I was in Kindergarten to 7th grade I was in and out of doctors appointments with my mom
and my grandmommy and spent majority of my time taking care of her and listening to what the doctors
said. After she passed away, 3 years later my grandfather got diagnosed with Cancer. For 5 months I was
in the hospital every single day. That is when I grew a real interest in medical advancements and what
they were actually using on my grandfather as well as grandmother. When I thought of this inquiry
question to use. I knew that it would be a good one for me to focus in on.
Next Step:
The next steps I plan on taking is continuing to look for good sources and information to be able
to use in my paper. I plan to make a first draft after getting additional information. I plan to peer edit
and have this and my inquiry questioned peer reviewed. I will look at more databases provided by the
library and make sure that they are reliable.
