Mobility Myth
- The author discusses mobility as it pertains to capitalism. What is your understanding of capitalism,
socialism, and communism? How does it compare with that of the author, do you think?
Communism everything is publicly own. Socialism a range of social and economic systems
characterized by social ownership and democratic control of the means of production; as well as the
political ideologies, theories, and movements that aim at their establishment.

-What does the author mean when she writes "upward mobility," and "social mobility"? Why is
mobility important?

-What is the author's purpose in the article?


To show that the social class you are born in is the same one you stay in.
- How does the concept of upward or social mobility effect our concept of necessities?

-Summarize the article. What does the title mean?
Selfish young people.
-What class markers does hooks describe young people pursuing? What others can you think of?

-Which of these class markers match up with the necessities we have on the board?
Water, clothes, transportation, technology.
-Why do we focus on these markers when discussing class? Why does the media?
We assume, we really do not know.
-How do these markers obscure other class issues?

It can make it really difficult, because say if you have an iphone, we automatically assume you don't
need food stamps, but you do not know everything that is going on.

Does the author of our other readings make any of Swales' "Moves"? Where could/should he
introduce some moves? Can we apply Swales' work to non-academic writing ? Is it helpful ? How ?
Yes. In all of our other readings the author establish what they are talking about in the beginning
which is them "Establishing their territory." Yes we can apply Swales' work to non-academic writing.
In anything we do we should have a explanation for doing it, which allows others to know what we
are doing or planning.
There are a number of cultural myths referenced in this article. What are they ? How does the
author's description of them correspond with (Or differ) from your understanding ?
The cultural myths that the author reference was prince charming, heroes, the American dream and
leave-to-beaver, family, Women. We have the same understanding as the author because we was
thought the same cultural myths.
On the last page, she asks what a specific cultural myth revisited would look like. Choose an old
cultural myth that has fallen from favor and "Remix" it for today.
One cultural myth that has fallen from "Remix" would be how women are treated. Women use to be
expected to stay at home and work, take care of the children and cook. Now women are in the wars,
doing all the jobs men doing and taking care of their family.
