Modifications
(Victor)

Addie will not have to cut

her pictures because they
will already be cut out for
her. She will still have to
paste them to work on her
fine motor skills.

Addie has been working on

gluing things and placing
them on a chart between the
lines to help her with her
organizational skills.

Classroom Management/Environment:
The students will be working in groups. They will already be sitting in the groups
that they are going to be working in. The students will need to raise their hands to
ask questions. Since the students are working in groups, they will be allowed to
talk in their inside voices to their group members.

Engagement/Focus:
1. Good Morning class!
2. Remember the story we read yesterday? [YES!]
3. What was the story with Elsa called? [Frozen!]
4. Well today we are going to use things from the book Frozen to solve a
chart mystery
5. You will be working in groups to solve the chart mystery
6. Please stay in your seat and raise your hand if you have a question for
me
Explanation/Procedures:
1. Today we are going to use our story Frozen that we read yesterday to talk
about what characters, settings and key events are.
2. Yesterday we talked about the different characters in Frozen. Somebody tell
me what a character is. [a person in the story]
3. That is right! A character is a person or animal in a story.
4. Now, someone raise your hand and name a character from Frozen. [Many
different answers]
5. Awesome! Lets talk about what a setting is.

Addie will be sitting at the

front of the classroom close
to the teacher so the teacher
can use proximal control to
keep her on task. Addie will
also be seated away from the
door so she does not get
distracted.
None

Victor will be sitting in

the front of the classroom
and will be sitting with his
assigned group.

After the students finish

their assignment, I am going
to have Addie come up and
place the picture for her
group to keep her engaged.

Everybodys worksheet
has 24point font on it to
help Victor. Victor is at a
table group with a student
who is on a higher
reading/word recognizing
level because he struggles
with sight words and letter
recognition.

6. Someone remind me what we said a setting was yesterday [where the story
takes place]
7. That is exactly right! A setting is where a story takes place
8. An example of a setting is the mountains in Frozen.
9. The last thing we are going to talk about before we start our activity is the key
events in a story
10. I know a few of you struggled with the key events yesterday so I am going
to give you an example of one from Frozen.
11. Remember that a key event is when something really important happens.
For example in Frozen, Elsa running away to the mountains and creating an ice
castle is a key event because it changes the story in a big way.
12. Somebody tell me, is Anna dancing in the ballroom a key event? [No;
because it does not change the story in a big way]
13. That is right! Ok now that we have reviewed what characters, settings and
key events are we are going to get started on solving the Frozen chart mystery.
14. I am passing out your worksheets and the pictures that you will paste in each
column. I want you to work together as a group to figure out where each picture
goes. After you are finished we will come back together and see what answers
each group came up with.
15. If you have any questions please raise your hand.
16. Once the class is finished we will come together whole class and I will call on
one person from each group to come up and place a larger version of one of the
pictures in the column that they think it goes in.
Extension/Elaboration:
Extension: I will give the students an additional chart and have them think of
additional characters, settings, and key events from Frozen. They will record
their answers in the chart by drawing a picture or writing out the words.
Elaboration: I will allow the students to use the hard copy of the book to find
where each picture goes. Using the book will help the student because they will
get to see additional pictures. They also can ask for help if they need assistance
rereading portions of the book for clarification.

For the extension, Addie will

be able to chose from a
variety of other pictures
from the story that are
printed out to put on her
chart. I did this because she
struggles with organization
and messy handwriting.

Victor would have 24 pt

font for his extension and
he would be able to
reference the book while
trying to think of other
things that happened in
the book since he
struggles with letter

Closure: I am so proud of how well you worked in groups today! You all did a
None
great job listening to each others thoughts and ideas. I am also very proud of
how well you completed your assignments! All of you did a fantastic job figuring
out where each picture went. Now, remind me who one of the characters is in
Frozen. [Olaf, Anna, Elsa, Sven etc.] Awesome! Someone tell me where one of
the settings was in Frozen. [Arendelle, Mountains, Ice Castle]. That's right!
Lastly, tell me one big key event that happened in Frozen. [Anna got hit with ice,
Anna turned to ice saving Elsa, Elsa saved Anna by an act of true love] Great job!
Now, tomorrow we are going to use what we have learned about characters,
settings, and key events to create our own story as a class!
Assessment: The students will each have their own worksheet that I will collect
at the end of class. I will assess them based on how many pictures they put in the
correct column. The students will need to get all 10 pictures correct on their
chart.
