NetEngine 40E Universal Service Router
1. Product Overview
Based on distributed hardware forwarding and nonblocking switching technologies, the NE80E features
carrier-class reliability, line-rate forwarding capability, a
well-designed Quality of Service (QoS) mechanism, strong
service-processing capability, and excellent expansibility.
The NE80E has the strong IP service processing
capabilities that are required by core routers and supports
Layer 2 Ethernet switching. It supports extensive IP edge
services and features, including Ethernet switching and
processing, Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) Virtual
Private Network (VPN), tunneling, and ow queues. The
NE80E also supports abundant clock technologies and
smooth transition from IPv4 to IPv6. The NE80E is driving
IP backbone networks and MANs to develop greater
broadband capacity, and to become more secure and
more service-oriented.
2. Product Highlights
Fifth-Generation Distributed Router
The NE80E is a fth generation router that has
the following advantages:
Uses industry-leading high-performance
network processor technology.
Inherits fourth-generation distributed
hardware processing architecture.
Integrates software exibility and hardware
high performance.
Provides line-rate forwarding capability, fast
service upgrade capability, and excellent
scalability.
Helps carriers obtain a top return on
investment.
Acts as an important driving force for IP
networks to develop greater broadband
capacity, and become more secure, more
intelligent, and more service-oriented.

Extensive Services
The NE80E provides various features and
powerful service processing capabilities, thus
satisfying the service deployment requirements
of IP or MPLS core backbone networks and
backbone networks.
The NE80E supports VPN services. The Layer
2 VPN (L2VPN), Layer 3 VPN (L3VPN), and
multicast VPN (MVPN) can be all deployed
on the NE80E depending on networking
requirements. Trafc engineering (TE) can also
be congured at the same time. The NE80E
supports multiple access modes, including
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), Inverse
Multiplexing over ATM (IMA) E1, Time-Division
Multiplexing (TDM), Packet over SONET (POS),
and Ethernet. It supports selective 802.1Q-in802.1Q (QinQ), Dynamic Host Conguration
Protocol (DHCP), and IP over Ethernet (IPoE).
Because the NE80E is suitable to access both
traditional services and newly emerging
services, it satises the needs of rich multiple
service environments.
The NE80E has powerful expandable
multicast capabilities with support for IPv4/
IPv6 multicast protocols such as Protocol
Independent Multicast - Sparse Mode (PIMSM), PIM - Dense Mode (PIM-DM), PIM Source Specic Multicast (PIM-SSM), Multicast
Listener Discovery Version 1 (MLDv1)/v2,
Embedded Rendezvous Point (RP), Internet
Group Membership Protocol Version 3
(IGMPv3), multicast Call Admission Control
(CAC), and IGMP snooping. The NE80E has
the exibility to carry video services such as
Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) services and
satisfy the requirements for multicast services
on networks of any scale.
The NE80E supports carrier-class Wireless
Local Area Network (WLAN) services. With
a built-in Access Controller (AC), the NE80E
can manage Access Points (APs) and perform
carrier-class authentication and accounting on
users that log in through WLAN. This greatly
enriches the variety of wireless service delivery
modes available to operators, reduces the
cost of operating wireless services, and helps
operators improve the quality of services. This
makes WLAN an important supplement to
2G/3G network access modes.
