Orientation for Parents

GUIDELINES FROM THE MINISTRY of


EDUCATION

The user is responsible for his/her


actions and activities involving
the laptop, networks and internet
services and for his/her computer
files, passwords and accounts.
Examples of unacceptable uses
that are expressly prohibited
include but are not limited to:

Accessing Inappropriate material


Illegal use
Violating copyrights
Plagiarism
Copying software/media files
Non school related uses
Misuse of
Passwords/Unauthorized Access
Malicious use/Vandalism

THE SCHOOL DOES NOT


Assume responsibility for any
unauthorized charges made by
students e.g. credit card charges

STUDENTS HAVE

No Expectation of Privacy the school


retains control, custody and supervision
of all computers and reserves the right
to monitor all machines and internet
activity by students and conduct
periodic checks

SECURITY & STORAGE


Laptops must not be:
Left in plain view in an unattended vehicle
Left in a vehicle overnight
Positioned so that they are visible from a
ground floor window
When leaving laptop unattended for
an extended period:
Physically secure it/ lock it away/ lock the
door of the room
NEVER leave laptop unattended in public
areas

LOSS or DAMAGE
Loss or theft of the laptop MUST
be reported immediately to the
Principal and the Police
Accidental damage to the
machine must be reported to the
Principal

COMPENSATION FOR LOSSES,


COSTS / DAMAGES
The student and the students
parent/guardian shall be responsible
for compensating the school for any
losses, costs or damages incurred by
the school related to violations of the
rules.
Laptop recipients must complete an
insurance claim if their laptop is lost,
stolen, unable to repair or
accidentally damaged

PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Educate your child in
responsible internet use and
online awareness.
Talk to your child or children
about Social values and the
standards that they should
follow on the use of the
Internet.

Block content you find to be


inappropriate for your children.
Talk to your children about
keeping the school laptop safe
from theft and how to handle
situations when confronted.
Enable parental controls on
their laptops to protect your
children when they are not

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
Use laptops in a responsible and

ethical manner
Obey general school rules concerning
behavior and communication that
apply to computer use
If a student receives email containing
inappropriate or abusive language or
if the subject matter is questionable,
he/she is asked to print a copy and
turn it in to the school

Student Activities Strictly


Prohibited
Illegal installation or transmission of
copyrighted materials.
Any action that violates existing
School Code of Conduct.
Cyber Bullying i. e. when a child, is
tormented, threatened, harassed,
humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise
targeted by another child, using the
Internet, interactive and digital
technologies or mobile phones.

Use of outside data disks without


prior approval from the
teacher/ICT Technician.
Changing of computer settings.
Spamming-Sending mass or
inappropriate emails.
Gaining access to other students
accounts, files, and/or data.
Password sharing.

Use of the schools internet/E-mail


accounts for financial or
commercial gain or for any illegal
activity
Use of anonymous and/or false
communications.
Participation in credit card fraud,
electronic forgery or other forms of
illegal behavior
Vandalism of school equipment

INTERNET SAFETY
BE SAFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dont invite trouble by using a
screen name or e-mail address
that is sexy or flirtatious. DO NOT
use your last name for usernames
on sites that open to the public to
view
Stop, Block and Tell! If any
website makes you uncomfortable

Be cautious when youre talking to people online.


Never arrange to meet people from the Internet
in person.
Never give out personal information (such as
your name, phone number, home address or
school name) to any stranger that will allow
someone to find you.
Never send your picture to people you dont
know.
Assume that everything you post on the Internet
is available for the whole world to see, including
your parents and teachers
When available, always set your profile to
private.

Signs That a Child Might Be At


Risk Online
Your child spends large amounts of
time online, especially at night.
You find pornography on your child's
computer.
Your child receives phone calls from
people you don't know or is making
calls, sometimes long distance, to
numbers you don't recognize.

Your child receives mail, gifts, or


packages from someone you don't
know
Your child turns the computer
monitor off or quickly changes the
screen on the monitor when you
come into the room.
Your child becomes withdrawn from
the family.
Your child is using an online account
belonging to someone else.

What to Do if You Suspect Your Child Is


Communicating With a Sexual Predator Online

Talk to your child about what you suspect


Review what is on the computer or if you
dont know how, ask for help from
someone who can
Monitor your childs access to all online
communication
Immediately report to the police if your
child has received pornography or other
sexually explicit content.
