Editor,
I would like to address the Arkansas State Law that prohibits the selling of
alcohol on Sundays. I am aware of the law that was passed recently allowing
counties to vote for this law prohibiting selling alcohol on Sundays to be
amended if its voted for by the majority. Even with this new law passed it
does not amend the actual law prohibiting the selling of alcohol on Sundays
unless it is voted on again by the specific county. This law was established by
individuals whom are long deceased and who established this law in a time
unlike our own. If this law is to remain in effect, then the state government
should at least issue a PSA announcement stating what purpose this law
serves. The law could not be for religious reasons due to the fact that church
and state are to remain separate. So, what is the real purpose behind this
law? What good does it do the public? This is one less day that the state can
collect tax revenue on alcohol. Meaning that is less tax money that the state
is in a year. Selling alcohol on Sundays could have the possibility of
increasing the state revenue tax. With Arkansas citizens having one of the
highest tax rates in the United States should the state of Arkansas being
looking into other ways to compensate for their lack of money via taxes?
Amending this law may not bring in a prominent amount of capital, but it
would be a step in the right direction with the people of this state in mind.
