EDUC 642: Pre-class assignment Part ONE #2

Assignment Objective: The student will be able to (TSWBAT)

articulate his/her views on the purpose of assessments.

Type a one paragraph response to this quote and

graphic:

Too often educational grades and report cards are

treated by teachers as autopsies when they should
be viewed as physicals. (Reeves, 2000)
I feel this quote and graphic shows a
message, that one too many times grades
are treated as a set in stone type deal. They
are treated in a way that improvement isnt
capable, when indeed it really is. I also feel
that grades vary based on the teacher, just
as autopsies can vary based on the doctor
who is giving the autopsy. I see the F on
the dead body as a reflection that once you
fail, that is it and there is no rebuilding or
fixing. The same is true with death, once you
are dead, you cannot rebuild. I also see it as
that teachers dont take their students
responses and grades and make changes to
their teachings, they just keep doing what
they are and what they were taught to do by
coaches, teachers, mentors, etc. It shows
that grades are a done deal and nothing can
be changed or added to improve a grade.
This isnt the way educational grades and
report cards should be treated.

EDUC 642: Pre-class assignment Part ONE #3

Assignment Objective: TSWBAT state his/her goals for the
course.

When I complete this course the 3 things about

assessment that I hope to know more about and/or be
better at implementing are :
1. How to create a learning contract and implement it
throughout the year, not just at the beginning and
end of the year.
2. What it really means for every pupil to respond and
how to make implement in into class daily.
3. Short and to the point exit tickets that are easy to
assess and put students into groups together at a
later class meeting.
