refugeestherehumanrights.IamSimaranKailey,astudentofthetenthgradeattending
AntelopeHighSchool,whothinksthatthedecisionsmadeforthecurrentrefugeecrisisshould
betakenintostrictconsideration.
TheworldiswitnessingthelargestrefugeecrisissinceWorld
WarII.MillionsofSyrianshavefledtheconflictandviolenceintheirhomelandandare
supersededdomestically.Atthistimewhentheworldneedshumanitarianleadership,manystates
arenowcallingfortheadjournmentoftheU.S.refugeeresettlementprogramorthe
establishmentofrestrictionsonfundingforSyriansandthegroupsofrefugees.WhileI
understandtheconcernsthatmanyofficialsmayhaveregardingthisissue,Iopposetheseactions
andbelievethattheymayjeopardizetheUnitedStatesprincipledleadershipintheworld.
SyrianrefugeesarefleeingexactlythekindofterrorthatunfoldedonthestreetsofParis.
Theyhavesufferedviolencejustlikethisforalmostfiveyears.Mosthavelostlovedonesto
persecution,violenceandtorture,inadditiontohavinghadtheircountry,theircommunity,and
everythingtheyownbrutallytakenfromthem.Hundredsofthousandsofrefugeesarealso
attemptingthedangeroustripacrossfromTurkeytoGreece,(TheSyrianSun),inhopethatthey
willfindabetterfuture.Thisiscausedbytheexponentialgrowth,(TheSyrianSun),ofthe
refugeesinexistenceduetotheunsanitaryconditions,violentsituations,andlackofresources
theyhave.Now,thattheUnitedStatesisrefusingtoexecutetheresettlementprogramthe
conditionswillbecomeunimaginable.
SinceWorldWarII,thisisthelargestrefugeecrisisthatisoccurring,andaspredicted
thiscrisisissimilartothatofduringtheholocaust,inmeansofthesituationtheUnitedstatesis
in.
DuringWorldWarII,theUnitedStateputstrictlimitationsonrefugeescomingfromEurope,
whichwereimposedbytheinfluenceofantiSemitism.Atthetime,manywereworriedthatthe
Nazis"wouldplantagents,spiesandsaboteursamongtheJewishrefugeesandthattheywould
pressuretheJews,particularlythosewhosefamilieswerestillinGermany,toactasagentson

theSyrianrefugees,theUnitedStateswouldbemakingthesamemistakethatwasdonebefore.
Alsothat,
closingthedoorsontherefugeeswouldbefatalfornotonlytherefugeesthemselves
andforthosewhoarewaitingforthemintheUnitedStates,butalsoforourreputationofbeing
warmheartedintheworld,whichwouldbetakenintoadifferentdirection.Thus,thecurrent
refugeecrisisissimilartothecrisisofWorldWarII,bythesituationthattheUnitedStatesis
facing.
TheresistanceoftheSyrianrefugeesiscausedbecauseofthecircumstancescreatedwith
theexistenceofISIS,butmostlybecauseoftheongoingdisagreementthattheusofficialsare
facing.Thereareseveraldifferentrestrictionsthatareimposedontheentryoftherefugees,
alongwithmanyattemptstobringtheinnocentpeoplehere.ButbecauseofPresidentObamas
historyofnotowninguptowhathesaidwouldbedone,manyU.S.officialsareopposingthe
admissionoftherefugeesandarenotwillingtoimplementtherefugeeresettlementprogram.I
believethattoturnourbackontherefugeeswouldbetrayournationscorevalues.Itwouldsend
ademoralisingmessagetotherestoftheworldthattheUnitesStatesisimposingrestrictionson
selectivecommunitiesbasedontheirreligionandethnicity.Thiswillalso,gointotheISIS
propaganda,allowingapotentialthreattooursafety.
Byturningdowntherefugees,wewouldbe
helpingtheIslamicStatebyshowingthatourleaderswanttoturnawaythesedesperate
families,becauseitisusagainstthem,(NewselaStaff).ISIShasasimplegoaltobreakour
unity,ourbiggeststrength,andtodivideusasanation.
TheUnitedStatesisawarmheartedand
welcomingcountrywithaverydiversesocietyandourresettlementprogrammustcontinueto
reflectthis.Bycominguponanagreement,andmaintainingthecountryshumanitarianefforts,
wecanwelcomerefugeeswhileensuringourownsecurity.Ihopethatwecancountuponyou,
asaGovernortospeakupagainsttheinjusticethattherefugeesmayhavetobear.
MillionsoftheSyrianrefugeeshavelosteverythingtounimaginabledegrees.Theyhave
lostnotonlytheirlovedones,butalso,theirhomecountrytothehandsofviolence,eviland
corruption.Theirsenseofnationalityseemstobecrusheduponthesacrificefortheirfamilies.
Theyarehelplessandareindireneedofanykindofhelptheycouldget.Yet,whenthetimehas
cometogiveinahelpinghandinmeansofhumanity,mostEuropeancountriesandtheUnited
Stateshavecometothevergeofrefusingtheirdecisions.TheUnitesStateshasbeengiven
anotherchancetofixthemistakethatwasdoneduringWorldWarII,whenwehaddecidedto
notallowtheJewishrefugeesenterandsentthembacktothehorrorstheycamefrom,crushing
thethousandsofhopestheyweaved.Weareonlyaverdictawayfromdoingthesame.Ioppose
tothedecisionsmadeofsuspendingtherefugeeresettlementprogrambecauseIbelievethat
sincetheadministrationisincreasingthecapacityoftheprogramssecurityanditsscreening
proceduresthatthereisnoneedforthecongresstoimposeanyfurtherrestrictions.Itisvitalfor
