Subject: Art Lesson Plan - Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.s Dream
Title: The Crayon Box That Talked; Social Studies, Diversity Art
Project and Poem
Grades: preschool (age 3) - 1st grade
Elements of Art:
Unity, perspective, movement, rhythm, color, and value.
Objectives:
Participate in rhymes with art project and listen and imitate
rhyme.
The child will develop an understanding of the cultural
importance of the visual arts, and strengthen their ability to
see similarities and differences.
The child will tell about or role play characters from familiar
stories or known people and own imagination.
The child will enact or depict coherent stories with
interactive roles and multiple episodes.
The child will Understand the simple message that when we
all work together, the results are much more interesting and
colorful.
The child will better understand cultural diversity by getting
along with others.
Materials:
Crayons, markers, paint, paint brushes, glue, and plastic
eyes
Paper of different colors, and crayon pattern

Motivation:
Exploring art materials

 Exploring differences
Celebration of who we are, exploring cultural diversity.
Playing together as friends, getting along with others, and
understanding we are all special and unique.
Awareness, and thinking.
Vocabulary:
As children to talk about and explain their art work and
crayon character.
Have the children to identify colors by name.
Have children to express their feeling after reading the
poems, did it make them happy or sad?
Procedures:
1. Read the poem A Box of Crayons to your students. It
is about the different colors getting along and liking
each other.
A Box of Crayons
While walking in a toy store the day before today, I
overheard a crayon box with many things to say.
I dont like red said yellow. And green said, nor do I
and no one here likes orange, but no one knows quite
why.
We are a box of crayon that really doesnt get along,
said blue to all the others something here is wrong!
Well I brought that box of crayons and took it home with
me and laid out all the crayons so the crayons could all
see.
They watched me as I colored with red, and blue and
green and black and white and orange and every color
in between.
They watched as green became the grass and blue
became the sky.
The yellow sun was shining bright on white clouds
drifting by.
Colors changing as they touch, becoming something
new.

They watched me as I colored. They watched till I was

through.
And when Id finally finished, I began to walk away.
And as I did the crayon box had something more to
say
I do like red said the yellow and green said SO DO I!
And blue you are terrific so high up in the sky.
We are a box of crayons each of us unique, but when
we get together the picture is complete.
(NOW IF WE COULD JUST LEARN FROM THIS BOX OF
CRAYONS THIS WORLD WOULD BE A BETTER PLACE.)

2. Children draw their portraits on a die cut crayon
pattern.
3. Place all the crayon into a giant crayon box that can be
created using construction paper.
4. After activity, read poem Wouldnt It Be Terrible?
Wouldnt It Be Sad?
Wouldnt it be terrible? Wouldnt it be sad? If just one
color was the color that we had?
If everything was purple? Or red? Or blue? Or green?
If yellow, pink, or orange, was all that could be seen?
Can you just imagine how dull the world would be, if
just one single color was all we got to see?
Evaluations/Assessments:
The children have develop skills in using art materials
(paints, markers, crayons, and glue)
The children are able to integrate color words in our
discussions such as the grass is green, the sky is blue, and
the clouds are white, they were also able to integrate color
words reflecting their skin tones, light, dark, brown, and
white.
The children are beginning to express and represent what
they know, think, believe, or feel their creations of art will
look like.
