History.com Staff. "The Great Depression." History.com. A&E Television Networks, 01 Jan.
2009. Web. 30 Apr. 2016.
Summary: This website gives a brief summary and analysis of how the Great Depression
happened in the year 1929. It also discuss how the Great Depression was the cause of
unemployment and that millions of workers were forced to laid off and fired from their jobs
because the economy was so low that their jobs couldnt pay them any longer.
Evaluation: I believe this source is credible because it is fairly recent and was published by a
well know television network which is the History Channel. I know that the History Channel is
credible because they are a reliable source to get all your information from.
Reflection: This source taught me that the Great Depression was the first major historical event
that one can track the history of unemployment to. I also learned that the Great Depression was
one of the worst historical events that affected the United States economy.
Hsun, Tiffany. "More Angelenos Are Becoming Street Vendors amid Weak Economy." Los
Angeles Times. Los Angeles Times, 6 Sept. 2010. Web. 10 Apr. 2016.
Summary: This articles main ide states that since people are unemployed, they are tired of living
in poverty and starting to take matters in their own hands. This solution to unemployment is that
the unemployed workers are starting to become a street vendor which is illegal in LA. These
unemployed workers are Becoming Street Vendors amid find this job more financially better than
having a real job. However, they dont want to be street vendors forever because they still
demand for the city to create better jobs so that they can support their families.
Evaluation: This source is also very useful and credible. It was also posted recently on the LA
Times Newspaper. This article closely relates to my topic because people are tired of being

unemployed that they would reduce themselves to being street vendors which is illegal in Los
Angeles. I will plan to use this article as my third paragraph in my essay that will focus on
possible solutions and ways to reduce unemployment and poverty in the city of LA.
Reflection: This source has taught me that people should not live on the fact that they are
unemployed and that they should do something about it in order to overcome their situation of
unemployment and poverty.
Staff and, W. S. (2006, Nov 18). UNEMPLOYMENT HITS RECORD LOW CALIFORNIA,
LOS ANGELES COUNTY PAYROLLS GROW. Daily News Retrieved from

accountid=7285
Summary: Unemployment sank to record low levels across California and in Los Angeles
County during October of 2006. The unemployment rate slipped to 4.5 percent last month from
4.8 percent in September and 5.2 percent a year ago as the economy added 9,300 payroll jobs. If
less jobs are created for the unemployed, the cities unemployment rate will continue to hit record
lows in the city.
Evaluation: I do think that this source is credible because I found it on the Proquest Database.
Everything on this database is peer reviewed and edited before it is posted on the database. It was
written in the Daily News Section of the Los Angeles Times, so it has to be credible.
Reflection: What I learned from this article is that Los Angeles unemployment rate has reached
its record goal. This means more than thousands of unemployed workers have become just a
mere statistic and are no longer seen as people or workers.
"Unemployment and Poverty." Unemployment and Poverty. Ed. Economy Watch. Economy
Watch, 13 Oct. 2010. Web. 10 Apr. 2016.
Summary: This website combines both issues of unemployment and poverty. Unemployment
and poverty are the two main global issues that affect our world and society today as a whole.
Unemployment is described as being laid off or fired from a job. Unemployment leads to poverty
because one does no longer have a source of income that they can depend upon. This source
untimely describes the different types and situations of poverty that affect the unemployed

people. It also states that unemployment is the major causes of poverty among all people. Finally,
it suggest a possible solution to put an end to both unemployment and poverty which are the
equality of income distribution amongst society and as well as to create more jobs for the
unemployed.
Evaluation: I believe this website is credible. It was published no too long ago on October 10th,
2010. The website is very well organized and easy to read. However, the website does contain
some ads and sponsors that do take you to another page if you do click on them. I think that this
source is very useful to my paper because it combines both ideas of unemployment and poverty,
Although this source does not talk exactly about Los Angles, it does talk about the issue of
unemployment and poverty that affects the unemployed people. This source states that whatever
be the type of poverty, the basic reason has always been lack of adequate income of the
unemployed. The lack of employment opportunities and the consequential income disparity bring
about mass poverty in most of the developing and under developed economies of the world. This
statement can also be applied as well to the issue of unemployment in LA.
Reflection: This source helps me understand my topic more because it relates to the assignment
of the research paper which is to explain and research how unemployment leads to poverty of the
people in the city of Los Angles. I will most likely use this source in the introduction of my paper
simply because it gets right to the main point of the essay. This source has taught me that
thousands of unemployed workers have to struggle and live each and every day in poverty.
Unemployment is a social injustice that must be fought against in order to provide these workers
with jobs so that they can live a happier and stable life.
Unemployment rises in los angeles. (2007, Jan 20). Xinhua News Agency - CEIS Retrieved from
http://libproxy.csun.edu/login?url=http://search.proquest.com/docview/452381485?
accountid=7285
Summary: The main point of this article was to show the reason why unemployment rose in LA.
Unemployment rose in LA due to the lack of job opportunity and work skills that are available in
the city.

Evaluation: I believe this source is credible because it was posted recently on the ProQuest
Database. This source also uses a lot of resources and evidence to prove its main idea and claim.
Even though this source is short it is packed with a lot of interesting facts and statistics.
Reflection: From this source, I learned that the unemployment rate in Los Angeles is vastly
increasing every year due to the lack of job opportunities that exist in Los Angeles.
VENANT, E. (1991, Jan 24). Still looking 3 who were laid off for purely economic reasons
facing uncertain futures. Los Angeles Times (Pre-1997 Fulltext) Retrieved from
http://libproxy.csun.edu/login?url=http://search.proquest.com/docview/281255279?
accountid=7285
Summary: People are being laid-off and fired for their jobs simply due to economic reasons.
These reasons are because their jobs can no longer pay them for the amount of work one does
simply because the company does not have any money. They have to let their workers go causing
them to file for unemployment and depend on the unemployment office for their financial
income.
Evaluation: I believe this source is very credible and useful. I do believe this source is somewhat
biased because it is written through the perspective of an unemployed worker. Even though this
article was published on the ProQuest Database on the LA times in the year 1991, this source is
very credible because it provides good evidence and analysis of the social issue she is writing
about. The writers goal is to show the readers the real reasons for why people get laid off or
fired from their jobs. She does this by providing three real life situations of three people who
were laid off from their jobs simply because their jobs had to. This source will help me come up
with and write one of the main paragraphs in my research paper and as well as come up with a
well thought out thesis statement.
Reflection: This source will help me understand my topic more because it further explains the
reason why people are laid off from their jobs simply because they can no longer be paid. People
are forced to leave their jobs and become unemployed. They never dream that they would ever
lose their jobs. Now they are forced to live in poverty because there are no jobs. I will use this
source to develop the second main paragraph in my essay and talk about why people are losing

their jobs. This source has taught me that hundreds of people are being laid-off from their jobs
for many resins such as economically which is unjust and unfair. People should not be fired from
their jobs.
