Diversity Lesson Plan

Standard: CCSS.ELA- Literacy. RL.K.3 With prompting and support,


identify characters, settings, and major events in a story.
Culture or Cultural Concept: Determination, Asian culture
Objective: Students will be able to identify characters, settings, and
major events in a story with prompting and support using a story map.
Materials: The book Rubys Wish by Shirin Yim Bridges, whiteboard,
dry erase markers, story map, pencils, and crayons.
Procedure:
Set the Stage

Show the book Rubys Wish by Shirin Yim Bridges


and say Today we are going to learn about
determination. Raise your hand if you know what
determination means. Briefly discuss the meaning
of determination.

State the Objective

Say, We will be able to identify the characters,


settings, and major events as a group and then put
them into our story map.

Investigate Prior Knowledge

Review the different parts of a story as a class.

New Information

Read story to the class.

Guided Practice

As a class discuss the characters, settings, and

events.
In small groups, the students will discuss each aspect
of the story map and then fill out their own story map
by drawing their answers.

Topic Review

Ask students what they learned from the story and


have a class discussion about the importance of
determination.

Evaluation/ Assessment: Teacher will check story maps to ensure


students drew the important characters, settings, and events.
