Career Matchup

According to John Swales author of The Concept of Discourse Community, summarizes that
a discourse community shares common goals, purposes, and use of language which help us move
and transition among communities more efficiently and successfully. There are six key concepts
that Swales uses to define a discourse community. Agreement on public set goals, mechanisms
for intercommunication among members, intercommunication to gain feedback, methods of
conveying information for further aims, common use of jargon(language), and a mixture of new
and experienced members. Joining the community of OBGYNs is like joining a family. Our
common goals are to deliver children as safely as possible and make families happy. In the
OBGYN family there are different ways of communication one of the most efficient is through
evaluations (paperwork), and emailing. OBGYNs writing style is descriptive and not very
lengthy. In addition, there are meetings family doctors and OBGYNs attend or personally create
to go over the wellbeing of the patient; and the next steps to take to make the transition for
mother as smooth and relaxed as possible. The OBGYN specialist can contact the family doctor
by phone call, emailing, and very commonly used faxing information from offices. OBGYNs
have a common way language also known as the medical language which is used to
communicate with the nurses for example if the baby is on its way like number of centimeters
dilated, or clamps, scalpel, epidural. There are always new babies entering into the OBGYN
community many are middle age range of 30-45, and I hope one day I will become part of the
family.
Deciding on a career is one of the most important decisions a person will make in their lives.
At the age as young as seven I knew I wanted to become a doctor. To give a quick back story,
when I was maybe one years old it is part of the Armenian tradition to celebrate the eruption of

the babies first tooth. In doing so, a ceremony is put together to see what career the baby will
chose when they grow up. The adults put a bunch of toys in front of the baby for example a
firetruck, microphone, medical toys, and books. Well I coincidently I chose the medical toys.
Even though I was only about one years old and I had no idea what exactly I had grabbed I find
it interesting that the same field interests me today!
As I grew up my favorite toys had something to do with medicine. I will never forget the day
my parents bought me the game Operation. I stayed up all night performing operations taking
kidneys out, putting the heart back in the chest of this plastic human configuration. I would have
to be very steady with the tweezers because if I wasnt the body would vibrate. In addition, my
favorite courses in school involved math and science especially Biology and Chemistry because
they seemed like the easier classes for me. My interest in the field of medicine continued to
grow. I guess one can say the coming of my first tooth ceremony was the tipping point in
choosing my career, but other than that I have always been interested in the field of medicine.
Even though, I wanted to be a doctor I did not know what branch of medicine I wanted to pursue.
Over the years I went from cardiologist, neurologist, ER doctor, to nutrition. I would research
and investigate what branch of medicine I can see myself in the most.
Becoming a doctor is important to me; it is not only about the high salary and benefits. I feel
being a doctor best suits my caring personality. My desire is to help people when they are ill or
in need, to make a difference in peoples lives in a positive way. In high school I was taking an
advanced chemistry course as well as an Anatomy/Physiology course; both my professors
impacted me with their desire and knowledge for the subject they were teaching which impacted
me and became my climax which lead me to secure my dream of becoming a doctor. One day I
was talking with my grandmother about possible career choices. I suggested options like plastic

surgeon, nutritionist, GI (gastric intestinal) doctor, and my grandmother suggested that I become
an OBGYN an (Obstetrician Gynecologist). At first I was hesitant, and pushed that option
aside, but then I started to consider it. I love children, I want to be a positive influence, and with
this career choice I will not only save lives, but help deliver lives into the world. Then it dawned
on me, this is what I want to do; I want to be part of an important day a day that will never be
forgotten a day of celebration. Becoming an OBGYN at most everyday will be a day of
celebration.
I am attending PCC because it is a great first step to a long journey of education. I think PCC
is the best school for me to help transfer. My transferring goals are to possibly transfer into
Pepperdine University and receive my bachelors and in the long run hopefully get accepted into
USC medical school. PCC helped me decide what major best suits me and that is Biochemistry,
more emphasis on the Chemistry. Although becoming an OBGYN is going to be stressful all the
happiness coming from that occupation will obliviate the cons of the occupation. My hopes are
that I have the strength to pull through the rigorous courses and curriculum. My goal is to
deliver happiness in to the world. Nothing is better than seeing the reaction on a husband and
wifes face knowing they just became a mom and dad. The gleaming happiness fills the room as
though it was a childs first Christmas and they open up their gifts and a big smile overrides the
adorable face, and at that moment you know you helped that smile arise on their faces after nine
months; it is that moment of happiness that makes it all worth it.
My career in becoming an OBGYN is becoming more visual as I take my college courses
leading into my Biochemistry major. From here I continue on my journey putting one foot in
front of the other celebrating an important impactful day every day to make that gleam of
happiness, the warm emotional joy every day will make me happy. There is always a possibility

in changing my career choice, but I know it will stay in the branch of medicine if I do end up
changing my career. I feel confident that becoming an OBGYN is right for me. I think thats the
key to finding and deciding on a career to identify what makes you happy, and I can confidently
say becoming an OBGYN will do just that for me.
The OBGYN community is very important to women, babies, and families. The purpose for
OBGYNs are to check-up on womens health before, during, and after a pregnancy. In addition,
an OBGYN prescribes medication to take or exercise and eating tips for the mother during her
pregnancy. At the end of the pregnancy the OBGYN is the one to deliver the child(s).
OBGYNs exist not only because there may be complications without having a doctor on staff ,
but to check-up on the mother and child for any possible deaths, but also to try to give a child a
chance of living. OBGYN does generally have their own clinics and patients. Its structured as
the doctor (OBGYN) is the head leader because it is her/his clinic and they have their nurses that
report to them about the patient. There are also OBGYNs in hospitals too, not necessarily
participating in private practice.
On a day to day basis a normal day for an OBGYN would be to deliver children, have checkups with their patients. The community serves mostly women and children because it is the
OBGYNs job to take care of the mom and baby before, during, and after the pregnancy. There
are many tasks to accomplish in the community; it is a stressful career because OBGYNs are
always on call because it is always unknown when the mother will go into labor. The tasks get
accomplished with the help of nurses, and always having a phone nearby in case of an
emergency.

Since OBGYNs are doctors the typical writing style would be descriptive having a lot of
concrete detail so that the doctor grasps a good idea of what is going on with the patient. It is
important to be organized and descriptive because you dont want to miss potential signs of an
illness or any other possible complications. The head doctor the OBGYN makes the decisions in
a private practice setting; the nurses will gather the information and pass it onto the specialist
(OBGYN) and the OBGYN will make decisions and help guide the mother through their
pregnancy. In terms of private practices the certified OBGYN is the head decision maker and
he/she have their nurses that help them with their patients and the nurses report to the OBGYN.
The purpose of the community is to take care of the mother and ultimately the baby to make sure
there are no complications. The conflicts related to the community are miscarriages, birth
defects and abortion policies. My artifacts are a questionnaire from and OBGYN facility, ultra
sound, and requirements for becoming an OBGYN.
My first artifact is a Gynecology questionnaire patients must fill out prior to the visit with an
OBGYN a series of questions for example do you have any diagnosed medical problems, when
was your last menstrual cycle, are you pregnant, talks about your intimate partner; general
questions so that when the OBGYN comes to evaluate the patient she/he will have a basic
background information about the patient. The second artifact is a picture of a baby from an
ultra sound. The ultra sound uses contraction so when a baby is in a mothers stomach you
identify the image of the infant on a screen. Ultrasounds are used very everyday by OBGYNs to
detect the growing process of the baby. Ultrasounds are also used to determine the gender of the
baby and a copy of the baby is also provided. Lastly the requirements needed to become an
OBGYN. In order to become an OBGYN one must pursue a four year undergraduate Bachelors
degree in Science in Human Biology. Key courses that are essential are Anatomy, Biology, and

Chemistry. The projected job growth from 2012-2022 is 18% and the average salary is
$212,570for Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Students must also complete four years of
medical school, pass the MCAT, receive a license which is mandatory for OBGYNs and
complete a residency work at either a hospital or private practice as an intern to gain work
experience.
Currently I am taking the general mathematics and science courses for becoming an OBGYN.
My next step will be to possibly work with children or shadow an OBGYN if possible. An
OBGYN is a doctor so I will need to receive a four year Bachelors degree in Science and
Human Biology. Take the MCAT and complete four years of medical school. In addition, I will
need to attend and participate in internships. Becoming an OBGYN is a lengthy path, but if its
what is in a persons heart then it will be an insightful journey. As a newcomer the OBGYN
community is very welcoming. I will need to build up experience being an intern, and hopefully
in the distant future open up my own private practice and have my own patients and facility.
Although being an OBGYN is uplifting at most there may be many conflicts such as birth
defects, miscarriages, and abortion which I will not be participating in; and speaking with an
OBGYN they told me that abortion is a sticky situation, but when my patients sign up with me to
be their OBGYN it will be listed that I do not participate in abortion and I have the right to refuse
and turn away the patient. I have learned plenty about the community such as the requirements
needed to become an OBGYN and things to expect when becoming one. With the research I
have done so far it has lead me to have more of a desire in becoming part of the OBGYN
community. Although becoming an OBGYN brings happiness and joy to families, it also
consists of difficult decision making, lots of stress, and tragic events such as miscarriages, death
of baby, or mother. Entering the medical field is difficult. There is a time for laughter and there

is a time to hold in the strong emotions and tell an individual that their loved one did not make it.
I think that going to be the hardest hurdle I am going to have to jump over. I am a person with
strong emotions and sometimes it is hard to keep them in and be brave. The great moments of
gleams and tears of happiness are what makes the long journey rewarding. The feeling of giving
an infant a chance at life and being helpful, but greatly making a family. OBGYNs are
important in the world especially for women because the OBGYN community is a family who
helps families being formed. My hopes for my future are to give as many infants a chance at life
because I strongly believe every infant even when still forming deserves a chance to live and
given the opportunity to make something of themselves and possibly making a difference in the
world. OBGYNs are important without my moms OBGYN I wouldnt be given the opportunity
and chance at life and get to experience one of the most special journeys that life has to offer.
