Names of Number Sets (Chp 1)
Whole Numbers - Natural (Counting) numbers + 0
Rational numbers can make by dividing one integer by another (but not dividing
by zero). In other words fractions. A Rational Number is a real number that can be
written as a simple fraction (i.e. as a ratio). 1.5 is a rational number because 1.5 = 3/2
(it can be written as a fraction)
o
3/2 (=1.5), 8/4 (=2), 136/100 (=1.36), -1/1000 (=-0.001)
Integers are like whole numbers, but they also include negative numbers ... but still no
fractions allowed! -16, -3, 0, 1, 198
Irrational numbers - Any real number that is not a Rational Number. An Irrational
Number is a real number that cannot be written as a simple fraction. Irrational means not
Rational
(Pi) is a famous irrational number Square root of 3, piee, neg square root eof 6, pie to the
4th
Real Numbers s- All Rational and Irrational numbers positive, neg or zero (i.e.
any point on a line)
o
Examples: 1.5, -12.3, 99, 2,

6.
Solving absolute value and compound inequalities
|7x = 3 | <= 24 answer is { x|-27/7 <= x <= 3 }
Multi step absolute value equation
3 |x + 2| - 1 = 8
answer x = 1 or x = -5 (pg 42 book)
CHAPTER 2
1.
Write linear equations in slope-intercept, point-slope, and std form
Slope-intercept y = mx+b
slope (y2-y1/x2-x1)
Point Slope - y-y1=m(x-x1)
Standard Form Ax + By = C
A shouldn't be negative, A and B shouldn't both be zero, and A, B and C
should be integers.
y = 3x + 2
Bring 3x to the left:
-3x + y = 2
Multiply all by -1:
3x - y = -2
Note: A=3, B=-1, C=-2
2. Perpendicular Lines
The slopes are negative reciprocals of each other
3. Function or not a function
To test if something is a function do 1 of 2
- Must pass the vertical line test
- Or look at ordered pairs and assure the same x does not appear more than one
4. Direct Variation
y = kx or (y/x) = k
11
y=af(x)
7. End Behavior
