Classroom Management Plan

Classroom Environment
I hope that my classroom environment will be a mixture of relaxed and structured, depending on the
necessary mood for the days activities. I want my students to feel comfortable and inspired when they come to my
classroom. I plan on using bright posters and incorporating images of scientists around the room. I really want to
encourage my female students to get involved in STEM programs, so I will include many pictures of female
scientists.
Set-Up

Below is a picture of the classroom I am currently in. This group set-up allows students to be able to work

collaboratively and engage in group labs, which is great for a science class. The only thing I would like to add to
this, is an area where students can go to relax. I think a bean bag chair or other comfortable area can be used a
fun reward system for students to be able to try and earn time in the cool zone. The storage areas in the front and
back of the classroom are areas where the turn-in baskets and past assignment folders will be located for student

use.

Daily Norms
Every day students will turn in assignments due on their way to class (if hard copy turn in is necessary).
Warm-Up questions will be on the screen for students to come in and work quietly. This will provide students with
time to turn in assignments, get materials out for the day, and get their minds onto the subject we will be exploring.
After ~5 minutes, I will check-in with students to see if they have anything they are interested in sharing with
the class about their lives or things they have going on. After we lighten up the mood and people have shared, we
will jump right into going over the warm-up activity they completed.
Following getting class started, the period will be divided into various activities to extend student learning on
the subject on hand. Multiple activities will be incorporated to help keep students interested and engaged with the
tasks.
Extra time will be used for individual studying or participating in Google It!. We will have a bulletin board
that students can put sticky notes on with questions relating to science. These questions can be about something
we have learned or are interested in learning more about. Students will be able to research a question and then

present it to the class in a method of their choosing. This is meant to be fun, encourage interests in science, and
promote student research skills.

Welcome to Ms. Hawkins Science Class!

Expectations
As a member of this class, I will expect you to behave with respect at all times. This includes treating each
other, myself, yourself, our resources, and our time with respect. (From here we will discuss what this looks like and
come up with other rules/consequences we can agree on as a class. But I overall think if the students can agree on
what respect looks like, we can agree on consequences that are proportional to the offense.)
Resources
I will provide resources for the class at the beginning of the semester to be located in the back corner of the
room. This area will have pencils, paper, glue sticks, hole-punches, staplers, etc. These are limited
resources and once they run out they run out.
Grading Information

Assignments will be due by the beginning of the class period. They will be turned into a basket at the front of
the room labelled with the class period. I will collect these after they have been turned in.
o Late work will be marked down 10% each day it is late. After four days, when it has become worth
only 50%, it will no longer decrease in value. Students may turn it in for half credit.
Assignments are due within the first 5 minutes of class. If you are tardy, your homework will

be considered late and marked down according to late work policy.

Absences/Make-Up work
o All Make-Up work will be located in a file labelled with the class and the day it was assigned at the
o

back of the room. You will be responsible for obtaining and completing missed assignments.
Work missed from an excused absence can be made-up for full credit as long as it is turned in one

o
o

week from absence.

Unexcused absences will result in an automatic 15% reduction on missed work.
Make-up exams will be given within two days of missed absence. You will need to contact me to
schedule a time to make-up your exam. If you do not make arrangements for your make-up exam

within two days of your missed absence, you will receive a zero.
Assessment Corrections
o If you scored less than an 75% on an exam, you will be able to participate in test corrections to
receive some of the points back. This will include explaining the correct answer on the exam, and
why the other answer options are incorrect.
There will be no retakes of exams, on test corrections. They are due within one week of
o

receiving your graded exams.

If there is a final project instead of an exam. There will also be correction opportunities. This will be

situational and addressed as they come up.
