It did not lose its total energy [1]. It was because energy cannot be
created or destroyed [1], only converted from one form to another. [1]
The gravitational potential energy that the tortoise possessed was
converted to kinetic energy as it was falling, and then heat and sound
energy when it hit the ground.
Kinetic energy = mv2 = (0.9) (12)2 = 64.8 J
Working: 1m, Answer with correct unit: 1m
Total energy = GPE + KE
When KE is 0 J, GPE = 64.8 J

GPE = mgh = 64.8 J

0.9 x 10 x h = 64.8
h = 64.8 / 9 = 7.2 m
Energy cannot be created or destroyed.
It can only be converted from one form to another. The total
amount of energy remains the same.
GPE = 60 10 5
GPE = 3000 J

(b)

Fossil fuel is a non-renewable source of energy. [1] It is limited and

will eventually run out. [1]

(c)

Solar energy. [1]

Solar energy panels can be placed on roof tops. It does not take up
much space and is a renewable source of energy. [1]
Chemical potential energy Heat energy Kinetic energy

5(b)

Hydroelectric power station

Similarity: Both utilise the conversion of kinetic energy to electrical
energy to generate power. OR Both use the turning of turbines to
generate electricity.
Difference: The hydroelectric power station relies on gravitational
potential energy to provide the initial energy required while the biogas
fuel station utilises biomass/ chemical potential energy
Or
Hydroelectric stations does not make use of heat energy but biogas
fuel makes use of heat energy
5(c)(iii) The height of the dam will affect the amount of gravitational potential
energy,
The higher the dam, the higher the gravitational potential energy
attained.
