UNM New Student Orientation Staf

The University of New Mexico

Dear UNM New Student Orientation Staf,
We are writing this report about sexual assault among college students
and the steps we can take to help prevent it. Across the country, sexual
assault happens on college campuses. Here at the New Mexico Coalition of
Sexual Assault Programs Inc., we strive to reduce the risk and increase
awareness on sexual assault. We noticed that sexual assaults have been on
or around your campus at a fairly steady rate.
With this information, we would like to propose a solution that will
lower the risk of sexual assault on UNM campus. If used, we believe that
sexual assault will decrease on UNM campus, and students will be more
encouraged and less afraid to come to campus. We are one of the biggest
organizations in New Mexico and have experience with assisting victims with
their recovery and training organizations such as local law enforcement, on
how to prevent sexual assault.
We have recently acquired ten thousand dollars from U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Preventions Rape Prevention and Education Program.
With this, we would like to set up a class during Freshman Orientations that
break up the larger groups into smaller, more focused groups to discuss
sexual assault in the community. When talking with the students, wed like it
to be specific to the surrounding areas of and on campus for where exactly
sexual assaults have been consistent, and we want the students to learn how
to protect themselves whether it be by the buddy system, pepper spray, etc.
Throughout the following proposal, we will discuss the ways in which we will
advertise and finance this sort of presentation with the help of your staf
allowing us to work with you.
Sincerely,
Carlos Acosta & Austin Jones

Current Situation
Throughout the last few years, we have monitored the sexual assault rates around
Albuquerque and on the University of New Mexicos campus. We were surprised with what we
found. Because there has been a consistent rise on campus, we felt that it was necessary to take
preventative action towards this. Here at New Mexico Coalition of Sexual Assault Prevention,
we would like to cause more awareness among the students. That is why, we would like to
address the new student orientation staff on the idea of a sexual assault prevention seminar. It is
important we address the incoming students, during orientation, because they are going to be
experiencing new things on their own. Because most sexual assault victims are usually between
the ages of 18 and 23, we feel it is important to address students in this age category. However,
all students are encouraged to attend.
Last year there was a reported eighteen sexual assaults on campus property. As well as
twenty-eight reports on stalking. (UNM Clery Letter) Women in college are three times more
likely than women in general to suffer from sexual assault. (RAINN) Also, college men are
seventy-eight percent more likely than nonstudent males to become a victim. (RAINN) As you
can tell by these statistics, college students are at risk the most and there has an average of 1.5
sexual assaults per month at UNM this past year. However, we believe that we have the solution
to these problems to at least reduce these numbers.
Goals
Our goal is to greatly reduce the risk of assault on the University of New Mexicos
campus. Also, it is to bring more attention to the incoming students and teach them how to take
preventative measures. To do this, we propose that an extra seminar be added to the New Student
Orientation for freshman. During this seminar, we, Carlos Acosta and Austin Jones, will provide
and explain statistics about sexual assault, where it occurs frequently, how to prevent it, and
lastly, where you can go if you become a victim. We also request the assistance from a member
of your staff that has knowledge of the resources on UNM such as the Womens resource center,
the blue poles, etc. This would help the students by giving them information about somewhere
they can access on a daily basis or someone that they can contact on campus whenever they need
to.
Along with the seminar, we would like to have pamphlets included into the bags that the
students receive stating not only how we at NMCSAP can assist them but also where students
can go to receive more immediate help on campus. We would also like to have listed the ways of

prevention that we discussed in the seminar along with some numbers that students can call such
as the UNM police department, the womens resource center, etc. During these seminars we will
throw out about twenty shirts with our information for NMCSAP on them to just do our best
within the budget to make it a more exciting experience. Hopefully, if the students are able to
utilize these resources, we can begin to reduce the statistics mentioned earlier.
Qualifications
Here at NMCSAP, we are the largest organization against assault in the state of New
Mexico. We hold seminars and training events for different government agencies on how to
assist sexual victims and how to prevent sexual assault, so that these organizations can
themselves begin to take action. Specifically we, Carlos Acosta and Austin Jones both have our
Doctorates in Human Behavior, and we lead these seminars on a weekly basis. Although the
success rates have yet to be recorded, we have already held seminars for about 60 agencies
throughout the state. This has been throughout the course of a little over a year, while we have
been employed with NMCSAP for almost 10 years trying to assist in building the company and
obtaining aid financially.
Costs and Benefits

As you can see from the table above, most of the money we have received will go straight
to the orientation seminar. The pamphlets, shirts, water bottles, and Frisbees are a way to reach
out to students on campus that have not been to our seminar. We also have extra money for any
other costs that come up.

Resume Review Sheet

Your Name: Emily Kraker
Your Profession: Manager, Network Services, AT&T
Date: 4/13/16

Please list three things that this resume does well:

1.

Short, concise statements in lieu of having too much information which makes the
resume appear cluttered.

2.

As a hiring manager, I appreciate and trust an applicant more when References are
provided on the resume itself. Its also good that you listed the position each reference
holds/held and at what Company it earns them credibility.

3. Good font variety (bold, caps, colors) - helps visually separate sections from each other.

Please list three things that this resume can improve/add (especially according to
conventions of resumes in your discipline):

1. Remember that your resume is going to be in a pile with a LOT of others how can you

make yours stand out at a glance? Font size is very important; 11 12 is standard, yours
is at 9. Because its so small, they may move on to the next resume quickly if its easier
to read.

2. The Objective is very generic. It should list your specific skills plus how you will benefit
the hiring company (which should be named in an objective). Example: You stated

the skills that I have already acquired WHAT skills?

Two examples online: 1)

Objective: To leverage my 5+ years of client-facing experience, public speaking skills, and expertise
in the health care industry into a public relations role with Happy Tree Educational Animations.

2)

Dedicated and motivated engineering graduate seeking entry level assistant quality
control manager position with Dyna Tech, LLC.

3. Education and jobs are in the wrong order. Both should always start with the most
recent and work backwards. You want your current job to be the first thing they see.
Also, a personal suggestion is to put the jobs first and THEN the education. After all,
youre applying for a JOB, not school. Hiring managers want to see your job experience
quickly.

4. Watch grammatical errors all verbs should be in the same tense throughout the
resume. Oversee, manage, bring, ensure, provide, etc You have a mixture of present
and past tense. Also, your City, State, Zip is missing from your home address at the top.

5. Make your skills and abilities list stronger. What do you have that someone else
doesnt? Example: you said Cash Handling anyone can handle cash maybe say
precision accounting of. The same goes for when you stated bring deposits of large
amounts to the bank focus on how you earned upper management trust by being
solely responsible for.

Proposal Reflection:
For this proposal assignment, it was far easier than the analytical report
because we didnt have to research any of the data, rather we were able to just put
the facts that we already knew together into our current situation. From there, we

created a plan for us to in our case, reduce the rate of sexual assault on and around
campus. The purpose of our proposal was to create a seminar that would hopefully
make the students who attended more aware of not only how to protect themselves
but also of what to do if they were to become a victim.
For our proposal, I think the one major downside to it is that we are doing this
seminar for incoming college students. As having recently been in that spot, I know
for a fact that we dont pay attention to anything at orientation, especially anything
that could come of as boring. We feel like we can figure it all out ourselves and are
too worried about who we meet during our first times as registered college
students. On the other hand, I do like the aspect of getting to these young college
students at this early time so that there is still the chance of getting to them.
For SLO#4, I focused on the edit and revise portion of it, and this was the
most beneficial of the whole proposal process. As I already expressed in the first
reflection for peer review, this set of reviewing was way better. The ability to discuss
things with Patricia after having the time to really look at it outside of the classs
timeframe was super helpful. Then, when we got to class the next day, we were
able to point out and discuss these revisions in a more constant flow of
communication, but we already knew of them from discussing it over email. Do it
like this again either for us or your next classes!
For SLO#, I kind of twisted it into the way that Carlos and I looked at our
subject, audience, issue, etc. to determine what direction we would go in for the
proposal, rather than genre of a paper. By this I mean that we figured our seminar
proposal was the best way to reach students in our victims age range. From there
we discussed when it should happen and how often. Lastly, we discussed what we
would like to discuss and give out at these seminars. From all of this, we composed
our proposal after knowing all the information we found and came up with.
Again, this entire proposal process improved from where we were as a class
for the analytical report. We were able to figure out the better ways to structure our
papers and edit them while you, Breanne were kind enough to ask for and accept
our opinions on how we could better the process, such as changing the peer review
setup. Thank you for all of your extra assistance with this specific assignment even
going back to helping us decide our proposal topic.
