Altered Book Explanation

1) On the religion section I planned to show my faith as a Jehovah Witness. I

plan to take an old bible and place some of my favorite scriptures around the
page and highlighting my favorites so that they stand out. This is includes my
first ones that I memorized and they ones I use in daily life to care for
uplifting myself. With that I plan to get pictures from articles that the society
has printed to show different styles of my faith. As well as taking some of the
pictures from me in conventions and parts to show how I interact within the
religious community. My life revolves around school, work, and religion so
that if going to be one of my more full of the pages. So the background
would be bible pages with highlights and most likely different styles of my
religion showing out what I personal believe affects me the most. As I was
planning my page about Religion many thoughts ran through my head, but
through research and study I decided to show my faith as a Jehovah Witness.
As explained within my draft I printed scriptures that I have memorized and
or are my favorite. I was planning on using a colored background paper, but
unfortunately that did not work with the outline of the book and the
scriptures already highlighted so I made it white to show the purity of truth
from the Bible. I had enough time I was able to print off some pictures from
the website which show my love for Jehovah. This includes the JW.org button,
a picture of a tract, and a Keep Calm sign which is always nice to see. Within
the pages though you will see pictures of how I feel and promote Jehovah,
articles that can be presented, and the website I try to use daily to learn and
study the bible. As stated in my draft the background would be visual images
of bible pages that have been highlighted or colored, the one most likely
different styles of the religion showing out what I personally believe affects
me the most. The scripture listed at Psalms 15 was the first chapter that I
was ever able to memorize on my own. John 17:3 was the first scripture other
than John 3:16 that I keep in my heart that allows me to search through the
scriptures and know that Jehovah loves me so much that he made the
ultimate sacrifice for me. As Psalms 83:18 lists the first time I saw and read
Jehovahs name for the first time, which makes for me one of the most
important scriptures in the world.
2) Politics, I dont play a huge role in just turning 18 this year. My family because
of a witness we dont follow the politics as much as others. I had planned for
this to be my most empty space by visually adding in effects that show I am
not for or against any political view, I just choose not to be a part within a
society that needs a political based government to rule them instead of using
the bible to find the truth on how society should be run. Now one thing is for
sure I will make fun of Trump, but my focus is never and probably will never
be on politics. The spread will be a mix of red and blue because I respect the
country I live I and happy that I live here, but the images will be lacking
because my view of politics. When creating the final draft of for politics and
taking into consideration the comments about not being very politic, I would
like to say through my Bible I have made this decision. My family even
without my religion does not deal with the politics of the world. I decided

instead of leaving a blank space like I stated in my draft. There are images
that show case who I am politically and my understanding of it all. I then
decided to work with my visuals and use ways of showing why I am not really
political. It shows more of a confusion than thanking the political relationship
most have in the world. For the political pictures I have two different ones
which has different words all in thought bubbles or way of rearranging them
so that it makes a different examples and shows my confusion within the
political debate. Along with that I understood that there are two arms where
they are debating and all you see is random logos showing the debate. I have
the American Flag on the page because I appreciate where I am from and the
country that I live in, as well as the freedom and political state we are in
compared to other countries. Although through my images you may see crazy
and might not understand all of what I do it makes sense to me. Just like in
politics nothing makes sense or someone is pointing their fingers at someone
else. I respect the country and stability I live in, but I dont have to deal with
the political debate.
3) Media I planned to show music, song lyrics and notes, as well as social media
post that play a large part in my life. My page will most likely by blue or black
and then use the white lettering to outline and make what I am saying more
visual. Half of the spread will be music, TV, and movies while the other is
Facebook, Instagram, and or snapchat! Lyrics from Lion King, Colbie Caillat,
little mix, Carrie Underwood, and many more that have empowered me as a
young girl and now woman. When creating the page I used my relationship
and favorites of music and TV shows. I worked with the some basic things of
music lyrics, music notes boarder, and random music channels that I love
listed throughout the page. You see that there is not just one side of me.
Instead of a black or blue page as listed I used a white background so you
can see a small side of brightness located within my book other than my
community. Along with that I used colored music notes all jumbled together
to create a boarder to show my bright side and some of my favorite colors.
Also instead of separating the two different pages I decided to mix and
mingle them together just like I do in my everyday life. I have Facebook,
Instagram, and Snapchat logos on there because they are a part of the media
statements that makes sense due to me going on it every day and multiple
times thus making it a large part of my media identity. As well as many
shows that I watch either on TV or on Nextflix. Others were lyrics from Colbie
Calliat, Little Mix, and the saying and song from the Lion King. All of these
lyrics speak to my heart and my whole life so that it takes part in who I am.
From Little mix singing I'd tell her to speak up, tell her to shout out, Talk a bit
louder, be a bit prouder, showing that us girls and women have a voice and
we need to be proud of it and showcase who we are. Colbie Calliat singing
Take your make-up off, Let your hair down, Take a breath, Look into the
mirror, at yourself, Don't you like you? 'Cause I like yo where she is saying to
love yourself and respect yourself. These are just some of the lyrics listed on
my Media page that have been positive for me.

4) Communal Identity I planned to take bright color to show case the page.
Instead of using light colors neon will take a part because my identity within a
community plays a large part in anyones life. With that I plan to use pictures
from Gen-X, my church, and family to show case what and who I am in a
communal aspect. As well as taking part in working with that idea and I plan
to use quotes from classes and books that I heard through many different
lectures because I am a student and that is a community within itself. In
creating the page I did use a lot of what I had planned that was in my draft. I
used a bright color like orange showing just how important and bright my life
is. Unlike the bright colors for words and quotes like I had planned. I rather
showed my way in which I am located and enjoy my life. I worked with my
work environments, clubs, and schools that I have been a part of and played
a major life role for me. I did not place quotes instead made more a collage of
images in which I worked through how to showcase my community side and
that it is not all perfect but more in place that it will be there for me no
matter the cost. Although there are not quotes I decided to add some words
that to me described some people or the public around me that made me an
identity. So I listen work, meaning I am a worker, School meaning I attend
school and a student, and Volunteer in which I volunteer my times and efforts
to many different organizations. For this I have a picture of my high school
group from a field trip our senior year in high school we are all really close
with one another so we are our own community. The second picture is of the
Union of Charlotte and the UNCC logo thus showing my College school
community and trust. The third is of my jobs that I was working at which
include Taco Bell and Embassy Suites Hotel. Along with that I also posted
Storm Volleyball which I spent about 5 years in my life. Communal Identity is
not something you make, it is what makes up around you and what you are a
part of.
5) For the earth and Environment I planned to make this spread and neutral
brown color. So that I can add greens that make them stand out. I like the
visual images of trees and the respect they show for others. I care about
natural hiking trails and forest and their conservation so taking that I plan to
show small images of some of the most beautiful and natural locations all
over the world. Some will have copies of personal pictures and others will
have magazine and or pamphlet pictures. I plan to show Yosemite in its finest
as well as some local images. When the start of creating the page for Earth
and Environment was very hard. I then sat and thought before I used the idea
from my draft in which I would use earthly tones to create the earth and
environment background, I used 3 different natural colors. I choose of a dark
brown, tan, and green all layered so it went from dirt, mid, and green sky like
in the trees. Also I cut out a shape of a tree, sun, and a knot hole in the
middle with a squirrel show casing that it is one of my favorite animals to see
when I enjoy my nature. Even though it is hard to see and it probably looks
more like a nut of some sort it is always with the effort of drawing. Like I said
in my draft I showcase an image of the Yosemite, Chimney Rock, and other
North Caroline Waterfalls that I have visited throughout my years living here.
I have been to most of these places and enjoy to be connected with the

earth. I personally did not take the pictures I would like to thank the Internet
for that, but I have been there and appreciate the world around me. Along
with that recycling is an important part in keeping our world healthy so that is
why the symbol is placed on this page to show what I love about nature and
how the beauty is so breath taking and enjoyable for me to see as I hike a
mountain, swim in a lake, or white wat raft down a natural stream. This
thought of swimming and white water rafting also made me add a last minute
drawing of a river going on the side of my page. I also added stickers of
animals from around the world showing my love for nature in the sense of
caring for animals including endangered.
6) Gender issues I planned to try and swirl the colors of pink and blue to show
case that I respect genders in their sense, but there can be mixture and
difference within society. Show casing I plan to show movements of for all
genders. I might take small pictures off the internet showing that women and
men should be equal in rights. Along with the spiraling color background I
might add the actual definition of what I gender issue is so that is can be
seen mixed in with the pages. As I planned to do in my draft did not come
into play like I had planned. Instead of Even though we fight and make
progress in the world sometimes it is hard to look at the positive of Gender
Issues. So when I made the idea of a swirled design it would have worked, but
instead of paint I used construction paper so instead I made a stripped and
jagged pattern where the boy and girl colors are still intertwined. With the
jagged patterns it also looks like they are fusing and connected together
instead of two separated options. Showing that the colors dont mean
anything that the neutral understanding of life is there to be appreciated and
that no color should be generated for one gender. Along with that I have 2
hearts in separate corners in which you see them rainbow for the LGBTQ
community. As well as the letters sprawled across the page showing I
appreciate and accept what they are no matter what. Also the word
acceptance is on there, where we should accept what people are be it boy,
girl, transgender, fluid, etc. I know I am probably missing a lot. Also the
letters are not one singular color to spell out the word, the words are different
colors to symbolize the LGBTQ community and their rainbow. Along with that I
have a quote for equality for life and then a sign for equality, because that is
what I am fighting for, I am fighting for the equality of gender and life that
everyone lives. I am trying to not look into the negatives within the issues of
gender I am trying to find the positives so in that way it will help shape the
future in so many ways. Looking at the negatives I believe sets us back father
than helping motivate us to move forward, so instead look at the proud fights
we do every day just to be out there.
7) For the page of Citizenship I planned to use an image of the United States as
my main picture. Then off by the corners I plan to place smaller picture of
North Carolina, Maryland, South Dakota, California, Montana, South America,
and Germany. This allows me to mark where I have been living wise and
places I maybe plan to go. Like Germany that shows my lineage and where
my family has come from. I place an image of where I would like to be a
citizen from South America because I have visited and want to go back

maybe become a citizen someday. If I cant put the images all around with
the States I would mark them with a red marker and then a small explanation
about why it was marked on a small bubble. The use and idea for Citizenship I
was, what was planned for mostly in my draft. In which one page is full of the
United State where it is marked so that it shows where my family is from and
other places where I have learned, birthed, and stayed in. My citizenship is
within North Carolina, but so many more because of my travel experience. On
the other page it holds where I want to go like London or other places in
South America. Also the Country of Germany and Poland because my
grandmother is from Prussia, but now the land is located in Poland, but my
Grandmother says when she was there that part was owned by Germany. She
said that I should make sure I know where I came from and to respect my
lineage. I did so with markers showing by dots located all over the map. In
also have words displayed on my pages where is says stuff like home, heart,
and freedom. To me a citizenship is where you feel these things. So for me I
can feel truly home where I was born, my aunt and uncles home and where
my dad is from, but the other places I feel the heartfelt love and freedom to
try and learn new things because of the different cultures and locations. Also
where I want to travel, I want to go so many other places, that are not listed,
but the top 3 are shown on the other page of the United States Map.

8) For the Arts, Hobbies, and Passions page I planned to make the background
look like a movie real going across the pages. In each picture image it will
hold different passions, hobbies, and arts that I love. I know a couple will
hold a alto saxophone, a swimming pool, and hiking stick, a boat, seashells,
books lots of books, horses, and maybe a ipod of some sort playing a song. I
dont have just one hobby, or passion, I having different and unique ones all
shaping who I am as a person. With the section you see as a movie real that
shows another passion all in itself. The real would be a grayish color and then
each seen would get color making them pop out of the page. For finishing my
Arts, Hobbies, and Passions Final I used the background that shows one of my
most favorite ways to relax, which is watching movies or TV. One side is blue
and one is gray because I enjoy watching color and black and white movies
showing the sides of both. Then in each section you get an image into many
things about what I love which is writing, family, horseback riding, pets,
snow, friendship, ipod, stack of books, a pen and paper for writing, flowers to
show my love of gardening. Along with that in the top right hand corner in the
black and white section it looks like there is nothing in it, but there are
actually zzz.. because I like my sleep and it is hard for me to sleep so
sometimes just some rest and relaxation is needed, just like a 30 minute nap.
I did not put a swimming pool like I had planned in my draft because, I do
enjoy the water and this shows I just dont have one hobby, art, or passion
that is located inside of me. Along with that I did not show many of what I
planned to show like my alto saxophone, sea shells, and a hiking stick. I think
though you would see that in other images like my passion for Sea life and
conservation of it, my love for the outdoors shown on my earth and
environmental page, and my love for music shown on my media page. When

looking for images I decided to take ones you dont really see on the others to
show my love for unique and colorful life like did you know I garden, can cook
and bake really well, and that I love fireworks and all their colors? So did you
