School/Subject: BHS/Chemistry Cooperating Teacher: M. Collver
1. How was the lesson constructed and organized?
Lesson format followed 5-E model. Engage phase was teacher demo of endothermic reaction. Ms. Helweg referred to equations on board. Photo of concrete was displayed as example of exothermic reaction. Ms. Helweg referred to equation as important to be on SOL test and then discussed other examples of reaction types. 2. What strategies did the teacher use for engaging students? Ms. Helweg used concrete examples of endothermic and exothermic reactions to engage students. For example, students were given opportunity to feel coldness of reaction. Explore phase was primarily teacher led explanation. Lesson plan was detailed and organized with appropriate examples of chemical reactions, followed by a lab in the exploration. The lab was well-prepared with clear directions, data collection tables, and questions for the students. 3. How did the teacher manage and monitor students learning? Ms. Helweg sat at her desk while students were writing down equations and working on practice problems. During the lab, Ms. Helweg circulated around the room assisting students. 4. How did the students respond to the activities? Students were on task taking notes during the engage and exploration and were all participating in the lab. 5. What are suggestions for this lesson and for future planning? I would recommend establishing more of teacher presence by standing up and circulating around the room during then engage/explore, even as students are writing down equations at their seats. During exploration, give students an opportunity to answer questions or practice problems with partner or small group and then report back to the class. Include safety information on lab sheet. Safety goggles needed when using flames. Nice job, Ms. Helweg. Your work and teaching demeanor exemplifies professionalism.
