Rationale Statement
Statement of Standard Six -- Lesson Assessment
The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their
own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teachers and learners decision
making. (NJPTSB, 2014, pg. 8)
Name of Artifact: Lesson Assessment
Course: Education Field Experience EDUC 230-01
Rationale Statement:
The artifact that I had to complete was the Lesson Assessment. For this artifact, I had to
consider my lesson plan and construct an end of unit assessment, in my case an essay, which
would help me ensure that my students understood everything that we did during the unit. This
assessment will be used to help measure my students skills as well as help me know what I have
to either re-teach, or help ensure that I can confidently move on to the next unit all together. This
assignment directly correlated to Standard 6.2 Essential Knowledge because it states that, The
teacher understands the differences between formative and summative applications of assessment
and knows how and when to use each. While creating my assessment, I had to think of a simple,
yet challenging way in which I can successfully wrap up my lesson and leave off knowing my
students actually learned and comprehended the material.
While creating this assessment, I learned a lot about being a teacher. For instance, as a
student, I never understood how much thought, time, and effort my teachers put into creating
simple tests, essays, or assignments. Now, as I sat in my room creating my own lesson
assessment, as the time flew by I realized how much I took my own teachers for granted. In the
constructing of my assessment, I continuously had to keep in mind the grade in which I am
hoping to teach in the future, and ensuring that the essay would not be too challenging. However,
at the same time I wanted my students to have to use critical thinking as well as citing and
pulling sources so that they would get more out of the essay. To me, the most important thing
that I learned while creating this artifact was that I need to ensure that I give myself enough time
to create assignments for my students so that they can learn to the best of their ability. If I do not
give myself enough time to create an assignment, I am not only cheating myself, but I am also
cheating my students.
The assignment that I created can be used all of the time throughout my teaching career.
Mostly due to the fact that I aspire to be an English teacher, and of course, essays are an essential
part to English classes. This assignment will come in handy in the future because I know for a
fact that my students will have to write essays, and I am glad to have brainstorming worksheets
available to help out my students who need to take the time to plan out their thoughts. Although

the worksheet I created has everything to do with constructing and writing a compare and
contrast essay, even if I do not have the luxury of having my students write exactly that, I can
always make modifications for other essay assignments that I am required to give in the future.
Personally, I love writing essays, and I hope that with my enthusiasm for English, that I can ease
my students into feeling less stressed and more confident when going through their other courses
which may include essay writing.
