Purdue University welcomes you to our symposium on current research accomplishments
by the university that highlights our continued focus on leading the way in innovative research.
My name is Mitch Daniels and I am the president of Purdue University. This symposium is
meant to highlight some of the cutting edge research Purdue performs that lead to a better world
for everyone. One example of the key research studies that will be discussed is how a researcher
at Purdue has developed a strategy for identifying antimicrobial drugs to better treat bacterial and
fungal infections (Purdue innovation, n.d.). Antibiotic resistance has been called one of the
world's most pressing public health problems and this research is leading to ways to fight this
problem (Antibiotic, n.d.). Another of the research findings by a Purdue researcher that well talk
about looks at overweight and obese adults who are losing weight with a high-protein diet as
being more likely to sleep better (Losing weight, 2016). 77% of older adults who are obese
report some kind of sleep problem (Obesity and Sleep, n.d.). This is a critical health issue that
Purdue is researching in hopes to improve the quality of life for many people. These are just two
example of real world problems that were tackling that leads to innovation in the private sector.
As president I am continuing a longstanding support of academic research that Purdue excels in
that leads to real-world applications (Purdues Mitch Daniels, 2013). As a two term governor of
the state of Indiana before I came to Purdue, I understand the importance of research for
economic growth (Mitchell E. Daniels, n.d.). When I was governor I led Indiana to financial
stability through tough economic times (Leonhardt, 2011). I understand the importance of public
research as the link to a vital partnership to the private sector which is able to apply that research
for societal gain and maintain a positive economic environment. Todays symposium is meant to
highlight some of the research Purdue University performs that maintains our status as one of the
