Who are we?

We are all students at Salt Lake Community College who

wish to spread awareness of the dangers an earthquake

may have and how to prepare.

Whats an Earthquake?
Earthquakes are a sudden release of energy that has

been building up from the movement of the earth.

Fault Lines
A fault is a fracture in the earths surface; they can be a

few centimeters long, to a thousands of kilometers long.

Fault slips always cause earthquakes (not all earthquakes
are caused by faults however) when the rock moves
against one another anywhere on the line.

Normal Faults:
The above block of
the fault falls under
the fault.

Strike-slip fault:
Two pieces of a
fault slide against
each other in a
horizontal
movement.

Reverse faults:
Its a hanging wall
where the lower
wall slips below
the fault line

Measuring Earthquakes:
Using a Seismograph
Primary waves. (P-waves) Travels the fastest.
Secondary waves (S-waves) Comes after P-waves.

Hence Secondary.
Surface waves Most destructive!

Using the Richter Scale

Individual & Family Preparedness

Prepare your home
React safely
Take cover
Survive on your own
Care for people, pets and property

Community Preparedness
What things are being done in your city and your

community to be prepared?

EERI
The EERI report focuses

on 3 aspects:
1. Prepare to
WITHSTAND
2. Prepare to
RESPOND
3. Prepare to
RECOVER

Prepare to Withstand
Withstand Means to: Hold

strong, unmoved, or Resist.

Strengthening buildings
Ex: Base Isolators

(Think of a Slinky)

Prepare to Respond
Respond means to:

React.
What are you going
to do?

Prepare to Recover
Recover means to:

Return to normal.
Getting business
back to business.

Why do we need to prepare as a community?

Earthquakes will come with out warning.
So many people are going to be effected.
It will take team work!
We don't need to be scared, just prepared!

Planning for Response

Planning for post-

earthquake response is
imperative, as people
directly affected by the
event may ignore, be
unaware of, not
understand, or be
incapable of receiving
announcements or
warnings.
Process of assistance.

During an Earthquake
If youre indoors, STAY THERE.
If youre outside, stay in the open. Do not get close to

buildings, power lines or anything that can harm you.

If your parents are driving, get out of traffic and stop.
If youre in a mountainous area, watch out for landslides.
If youre in a crowded place, stay low and cover your head

and neck with your hands and arms.

After an Earthquake
Check for fire or fire hazards.
Be aware that items may fall out of cupboards or closets

when the door is opened, and that chimneys can be

weakened and fall with a touch. Check for cracks and
damage to the roof and foundation of your home.
Listen to the radio for important information and

instructions.
If you leave home, leave a message telling friends and

family your location.
