This Lab report will go into detail about the digestive system and its functions.

We
will start by taking a look at the structures of our mouth. Our mouth has hundreds
of small glands in it known as salivary glands which produces our saliva. Saliva is
the first thing to start breaking our food through a process called salivary amylase.
The most important function of our mouth has to be the ability to taste. Our tongue
has millions of tiny sensors known as taste buds that gives us our tasting ability,
but don't be fooled, our taste buds are not actually the biggest part of our taste. Our
nose controls about 80% of our taste. We actually proved this through one of our
experiments. Chewing is another big part of our digestion because our saliva can
only do so much. Our teeth grind our food down into smaller pieces that way our
saliva can do its job.

Above is a table of the test data from our taste experiment and it proves
taste is 80% smell. The xs represent taste.
The next thing that we studied was the structure and the functions of the
esophagus and stomach. Digestion of food is an important part of
absorption of important vitamins and minerals that give us valuable energy.
We will start with the esophagus. The esophagus is a long muscular
cylindrical tube that runs from the back of your throat down to your

stomach. It acts as a transport system which transports food from your

mouth down to your stomach in the form of bolus. Bolus is the mixture of
partially digested food and sailva. The next thing we will talk about is the
stomach. The stomach is a fist sized pouched located in your abdominal
region, and it acts a digestive washing machine for your bolus. It mixes
your bolus with gastric juices and begins to turn and digest your bolus
farther before it enters the small intestine.
