Alicia Nails, the professor of COM 4250 Reporting on Race, Gender and Culture, at Wayne State
University, said she has outlined several guidelines and rules over the years to help students
become objective writers and, that they serve as the key to passing the class.

According to the COM 4250 Course Writing Guidelines, the reason this particular course focuses
on objective writing is so that your print journalism writing is free of opinion and your personal
point of view.

Unlike in broadcasting, which is a person speaking to people, in a print story you do not speak
directly to the reader. You are reporting facts/views, not narrating a story.

THIS IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT, SHE SAYS, IN A COURSE ABOUT THE SENSITIVE

ISSUES INVOLVING RACE, GENDER AND CULTURE . . .

Nails said it is very important that as journalists we take give extra attention to attributing all our
sources, and that each sentence has their own source in order to be objective.

In this course its better to over attribute statements that contain a point of view, assertion, or
analysis, reported COM 4250 Course Writing Guidelines.

According to the Winter 4250 Syllabus, a tool that can be used to check writing for objectivity is
to Double space between each line of text and then triple space between each sentence.

Then, the Syllabus reported, now that sentences are so widely separated, for each and every
sentence, put the appropriate attribution to each source.

Examples of a source, Nails said can include, news articles from mainstream publications,
research journals, other peoples quotes, etc.

She said, a multisource article should have a minimum of three sources.

One of the purposes of citing a source that is in an article, report, etc. is for the reader to be able
to refer back to this primary document, reported COM 4250 Course Writing Guidelines.

Citing a source is the only real way to guarantee, she said, that you did not plagiarize or state a
point of view/opinion.

The Winter 4250 Syllabus reported that adjectives can convey an opinion or adopt a point of
view.

According to Working With Words, an adjective is a modifier that are, words that describe or
limit subjects, objects of verbs. They provide detail.

People use adjectives to modify nouns or pronouns, turning it into an opinion, reported
Working With Words.

Nails said adopting a point of view or opinion is not the goal of this class, and should be avoided.

The professor said there are ways journalists can be creative when quoting others opinions and
point of views.

Choosing stimulating and thought-provoking quotes to select in peoples talking, she said, is the
creative part in journalistic writing.
