seriousness of the consequence. Use the matrix below as a guide to assist with the risk assessment:

Risk assessment for

excursion to
Queensland
Museum, Science
Centre and art
galleries

A risk assessment helps to identify possible hazards,

indicate the level of risk and outline a procedure in case
that hazard occurs. This risk assessment was for an
excursion to the cultural centre of Brisbane by bus. The
journey time was around an hour away from school.

4.4 Maintain student safety

This documents outlines the potential risks to students on an
excursion to Brisbane. Using the tables from Education Queensland
it was determined that the excursion was of a medium risk to
students.
To ensure students stayed safe strategies are suggested such as
supervision, outline appropriate behaviour in different situations,
and use of seatbelts when on the bus.

Most of the potential risks identified were to do with

movement between the bus and the venues. Other
risks included OH&S at the venues, unstructured
activity time, and interacting with members of the
public.
This assessment identified that the excursion would be
mostly safe for students, with little likelihood of an
incident occurring.

7.2 Comply with legislative, administrative and organisational

requirements
The school required a risk assessment to be completed before the
excursion would be approved. This assessment also assists
teachers to fulfil their duty of care. I could not find any specific
legislation for a risk assessment to be completed. It is outlined as
Department of Education and Training (2015) policy that the
principal must ensure risk assessments are conducted for school
curriculum activities.
