LESSON: Introduction to Urbanization and Urban Growth

2. What is population density.
3. The factors influencing the distribution of population and population density in the
Caribbean.
4. The definition of migration.
5. The definition of natural increase.

SET INDUCTION (5 mins)


Students will be separated into two groups labelled: rural and urban. Tablets will be placed
before on the desks on the urban side. The teacher will send a video to the tablets and allow
students in the urban side to call their friends from the rural side or free movement from rural to
urban. The movement of students will be observed and then discussed.

SECTION ONE (8 mins)


Content:
What is urbanisation?
Urbanisation is defined as the process by which an increasing proportion of the population lives
in urban areas (towns or cities). This growth is often through migration from rural areas
(countryside) and natural increase.

What is urban growth?
is the actual increase in physical size and total population of urban areas.

Content:
What are the causes of an increase in population in urban areas?
* natural increase

* migration (internal, regional and international)

Internal migration is also called rural-urban migration with respect to urbanization. The factors
influencing this are known as push (forced) and pull (attracted) factors.
